Two Faces of January
7/10
A life time con man, & a petty con man lives gets linked together as the latter tries to escape his past, and the former is just trying to escape.
Viggo Mortesen & Oscar Issac face off as the two con men...

Boyhood - 5/10. There is absolutely nothing exceptional about this movie. It is not original, and the "story" is nothing we haven't seen a hundred times. Only the fact that the same actors were used over the many years to make it is of note, but that doesn't make what goes on any more worthwhile. The movie also goes out of its way to shoehorn politics in for no reason.

The process is the reason this film has gotten so much attention, and as amazing as the process is... film is not so amazing.
If it wins best picture it will be more of a lifetime achievement award for the director.

Went to see American Sniper yesterday with the wife. I would say 8/10. I thought Cooper played the role quite well.

We don't go out to movies much now that we have 2 kids, not to mention the prices of the tickets, popcorn, etc...

I don't even think I'd say the process is all that amazing. It just takes some patience and good fortune (actors not dying or anything like that).

Finally watched Draft Day.
Sure it was far fetched with all of trading and scenarios going on during the 12 hour period of the draft day but it was entertaining even if it was not what most draft nicks would consider real.

***SPOILERS***

The part that did bother me was the whole...the father was fired by him because the mother knew if he kept coaching he would die so he fired him without telling others why. Add to that, the mother storming in and demanding he say a prayer or something over the ashes on the most important day of his job. Also add into the idea that him and his woman is having relationship problems and she is pregnant. Those things seemed to me to be added JUST for the woman who would be watching the movie.
I kind of hate when they make a movie, sports or action or whatever it is, and it is blatantly obvious that they have to throw in a romantic interest or problem ONLY to garner the women for the movie.

I know they gotta increase the number of people who want to watch a movie but come on...sometimes it is just so bad that they add forced story lines in it that really have no part in a movie.

Just a pet peeve of mine.

So take those above mentioned things out and all and all I liked it. At one part when he gives up the first AND the second round picks I was thinking that if Jerry (or any GM for that matter) did that we would have to shut down the interenet due to all of the outrage and it would be warranted lol.

If Jerry gave away three first round picks to move up and take a player that most thought we would have at 7 we would be furious.

I don't care how it would have turned out because at the end of the day he did not move up to take that guy and he gambled later that he could get another guy.

So even if Jerry pulled that off...we would have still been pissed about the process behind it and viewed it as him somehow pulling his arse out of a fire and being very lucky that it panned out.

A Most Violent Year

I enjoyed the story. 9.5 of 10
I enjoyed the way it was told. 8.5 of 10

Oscar Isaac seems to draw on Michael Corleone with his look, attire and mannerisms.
His decisions though are something else.

I recommend.

Case in point on another Eastwood movie, Invictus. My wife is from South Africa and her family suffered greatly during Apartheid, so she is very emotional about anything Mandela. We were excited to see the movie, and while it drummed up plenty of memories for her, we both felt the film rang hollow with Freeman/Damon relationship.

Did you ever see "The Power of One"?

Divergent - 5 out of 10. Seemed like it was along the lines of the Hunger Games, but it didn't quite carry the day imo.

This is Where I Leave You - 5 out of 10 - One of those saddish movies about life struggles. Had some good moments but the moments where I rolled my eyes and said "why is that even in the movie" far outweighed any moments of enjoyment.

Anchorman 2 - I took a while to watch it because I was worried it would be bad. I was right. It was bad. A few funny parts, but waaaaaaay too long.

It was like a very light version of the Up Series.

****SPOILER ALERT**** (Read no further if you have not seen the movie but intend to.)

What confounded me was how after the GM of the team that initially held the top over-all pick somehow fleeces Costner's character out of three first round picks (7th overall in THAT draft and a 1st from each of the following two drafts) for THAT pick. Costner, having chosen the player he likely would have had at 7th overall ANYWAY, and due to a subsequent trade with yet another team giving them the 6th overall pick in same draft - is able to recoup ALL those #1 picks from his original trade partner BECAUSE... fans and beat writers were criticizing that GM for passing on the over-hyped QB at #1 overall.(AND he finagles some kicker/special-teamer from their active roster, to boot.)

Any GM worth a dime would blow beer through his nose during this scene.

That's cool that you're friend with Nick Nolte. Tell him I said 'hi' the next time you two go to the movies.

Watched a movie called 'Copenhagen' on Netflix the other night. Not sure why I even decided to watch it. It had some challenging themes, but it's one of those movies you think about for a few days after. Interesting indy flick.

I saw it a few months ago but I remember thinking to myself, "After all that drama, wheeling and dealing, he basically walked out with what he would have if he just stayed put at #7." Correct me if I'm wrong, but he basically traded the #7 and the next two years' first round picks and ending up drafting the guy he was planning on drafting at #7, getting the two first round picks back, and getting a special teams player. So I watched two hours to see him basically get nothing he didn't have before the draft started.

He walked into the draft with one top ten pick. He walked out of the draft with Two top ten picks and a ST player and gave up thee second round picks.

Well, the one he picked first probably wasn't going to be a top 10. They indicated he'd likely fall to 15th or later. So, basically he gave up 3 seconds for a mid first round pick, a ST player, and a much higher contract to deal with.

John Wick 7.5 / 10 - Not a big Keanu Reeves fan but thought he was pretty good in this movie. One of the better action movies Ive seen in a while.
