The Martian was ho hum for me 6/10, predictable 'issues', forced at times

What you're saying is not correct because the ship actually sling-shotted around the earth and got supplies from the Chinese ship as it went around earth. So it wasn't going faster than expected. The problems appeared very forced and contrived to me. And I'm a huge Sci- Fi fan. I watched it on a plane, at home I would likely not have finished it.

Yeah, but they STILL had to slingshot around Mars, and had to keep the speed up to make it home without running out of gas. They couldn't do a normal pass.

But this was the expected orbit for both vessels

Anyway, my point is, it was an OK movie from my perspective

Eddies the Eagle.

Watched with my kids and had a throughly good time.

8.5 out of 10.

Footloose the remake....Why?

I don't understand why this was made...yes I know I know it is about money but really the movie was pretty much a carbon copy of the original just with different actors and frankly the lead actor just did not have the same on screen charisma as a young Kevin Bacon did.

I thought maybe they would change it up a little more but other than the School Bus race instead of the tractor race it was pretty much the same movie.

Both movies were about the same and I guess for the youth that did not see the original they might like the new one as much as some of us might have liked the original when we were younger.

Either way if they are going to be carbon copies of each other...might as well watch the old one as at least the main character is better.

Child44 - Just could not get into it after trying to watch it for 45-60 minutes. Sometimes my ears give me troubles when someone has a thick accent or the sound is off on some shows or movies. For instance I like the show Elementary with Johnny Lee Miller but I have to have the volume up a good deal to understand his lines due to him talking quickly and having the accent. Other shows or movies sometimes the background noise is too loud and when they talk it is hard to hear.
Child44 must have been a mix of both of those plus a very slow beginning on top of having such a dark visual quality that I just could not get past all of it. Maybe it turned into a movie that was really good but I just could not get into it due to the sound issues, dark visuals and what seemed to be a very slow and drawn out script.

The Surface - Sean Astin

This is one of those movies that could have been much better with a better budget and some tweaks to the script.
As it was, it was kind of slow and plodding and although you wanted to feel for the characters, the way it was filmed left you with a ...Meh feeling towards them. And you still wonder what in the heck
the main character was trying to do with the liquids in different bottles. If you see it you will know what they were meant for so I won't ruin it for you but by starting off with one liquid but having the other...it just did not make sense to
have all four bottles...unless he knew he was going to run into someone who would need some of the other liquids and blah blah blah. So even with the low budget, even with the idea that some of it was silly (the liquids in teh bottles) and even though the script could have been better....still not a bad movie...just nowhere near great.

Oldboy - the American Remake.

Just not as good as the original version.

If you have never seen the original you might like it.

However when you see the original version you know the ending so it takes the shock out of it for you.

Also one of the better fight scenes in recent movies in the original movie hallway fight was better than the remake.

What I do give credit to the remake is they have a couple of things that pay homage to the original pertaining to scenes they omitted in the remake.

Again, not as good as the original but if you never seen the original you might like the american version. You can watch it for free on Crackle or the crackle app right now.

Finally caught Dead Pool. Had a few holes, but it was a very enjoyable flick. Looks like Ryan Reynolds found his franchise.

The Visit - couple of things that made you go o_O and the young boy says a few things that make you laugh... Other than that it just was not that good and it made me nod off for a bit.

I tried to watch it last night. I couldn't get into it. I turned it off after 30 minutes.

Watched the miniseries Shogun again. Basically watched it over the last few days.

I think I watch it once a year or once every other year...same with Band of Brothers.

And as always I still love them both.

Hai!

Soooo Zootopia... I liked it. Solid 7/10

There was only one scene where I was like it was doing too much. But that's because it was definitely one of those lowbrow comedic moments only adults would get and kids would overlook. Overall, good movie that I actually watched and enjoyed.

Saw it tonight and thought it was a solid slick. Better than expected. 8/10. Kiddo liked it.

Thought it was Ok, but then again my co worker said it was awful before I saw so I had low expectations

Eddie the Eagle - 6/10. There's nothing really bad about this movie, but nothing particularly good either. And in the end it is rather underwhelming.

Ice Pirates - For some reason I recall loving this movie way back in the day. So I had a 50% off deal on Google play and bought it. Classic example of a movie you liked years ago being a HUGE let down later.

The Sand Pebbles - old Steve McQueen movie I had not seen. American guy ship in late 20's China. Not a bad movie if like older war type movies.

Exists - Not found footage movie but Blair Witch type where someone is filming with video cameras and go pros. Kids go camping in cabin in backwoods area. While traveling there at night they hit an animal but can't find out what it was. Later you find out it is a sasquatch and the mother or father goes after them in a fit of vengeance. Low budget and silly but could have been much worse. Better than I thought it would be but could only recommend to those who can enjoy low budget B movies.

7.5/10.0

How do you maintain suspense when 90% of the movie takes place in an underground bunker? 10 Cloverfield Lane pulls it off nicely. The sequel does not have the look or feel of the original but establishes another solid chapter in the off-the-wall American giant monster series.
