The Drop 7.5/10
The underbelly of the Chechen gang culture is connected by Brooklyn small timers with pasts that reveals the old expression... "Things are not always what they seem"
The Drop is an Impressive follow up to "Bullshead" by Dutch director Michaël R. Roskam. Talented Cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis rejoins Roskam to craft this crime drama.
One of James Gandolfini last performances.... and he delivers.... RIP

side note... young lady from the original "Girl with the Dragon Tatoo" series... brings her chops and cuteness to this film as well....

Finally got around to seeing "Edge of Tomorrow". Wow. That's the best scifi movie I've seen in years.

Easy 9/10.

American Beauty was a very good film. One of the last two movies of the late great cinematographer Conrad Hall.... (road to perdition was the other... also a very good film.. same director, sam mendes)
American Movie is one of those movie you either love or hate. I love it. It's one of my top 10 movies. I saw it with my wife and another married couple when it came out. As I said I loved it, as did the other couple's wife, but my wife and the other husband hated it. They thought it was a stupid movie. I don't think I've ever met anyone that didn't have a strong opinion of the movie.

I get it... same thing with films like Black Swan, or Drive.... but what they all have in common is amazing craftsmanship, & high attention to detail.... everything means something... never a wasted breath...... But the story may not appeal to everyone....... I heard a few folks in this thread mention that David O. Russell films were boring, or slow. But his craftsmanship is amazing, It leaves most directors in the dust.... But I get it... Instant gratification and escapism is what the casual film goer is going for.... a common theme among causal film goers is "it was overrated" but compared to what? Do you even know why or how it was "rated"?... like what you like...

haha...
If it makes em feel good...go for it I say...
I'm sure you have a much stricter grading policy...

I know. Movies like Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz, The Godfather, Casablanca, etc. You know, ones that stand the test of time over endless decades and still hold up. I'm not the only one with this so called stricker grading policy.

I just commented above. I respect the casual filmgoer, they help the film business go around... and the ultimate goal is to have a film that satisfies the arts and the popcorn goer.... "The Dark Knight" is one. Ratings are so arbitrary.... what does 1.-10 mean to anyone? For you it may mean, "The score was strong, the colors helped tell the story... the dialog had hidden subtext...etc"..... for someone else it might mean, "My kids and I had a ball". I got respect for both responses....

I was mainly referring to the new movies that people have seen for the 1st time, and give it 9-10 stars. I myself gave Captain Ameiica (new one) I think 9 stars. I have watched it a couple times since then, and have now revised it to 7.5 myself.

haha... yeah that needed a revision... I understand what you mean... but its still so arbitrary..
You my friend are fan of the auteur, so am I... that takes a certain kind of investment that not everyone is willing to give..
respect for your appreciation....

Were you referring to American Beauty or American Movie as compared to those other films you listed?

On flight back to USA from London yesterday:

Oculus

Holy crap was this bad. Sure did help me sleep on the flight though. I can't even rate it because I missed quite a bit do to zonking out.

Pompeii
(spoiler alert)

With an incredibly bad miscasting of Jack Bauer as a Roman senator, this film decided to do the right thing at the end and KILL EVERYBODY. Nice.

6 out of 10

Oculus: 3/10. Pointless and stupid. All that needs to be said.

Monuments Men: 3/10. I could say tje same for this as I did about Oculus, but in different ways. I didn't care about what was going on at all. It was pretty jumpy too. Felt like a waste of time and cast, and I had a hard time finishing it.

I feel you on that. I think movies people consider "great"or special fall into two categories: 1) great because it is a flawlessly made movie, and 2) great because you have a personal connection with it.

For example, a movie I probably consider the most flawless movie I've ever seen is Catch Me If You Can. The acting, script, story, suspense, humor, etc. It's a movie I have to watch once every five years for the rest of my life.

Now, two movies I consider special and overlook their flaws are Antwone Fisher and Finding Forrester. When I saw the movies I related to them so much and now I'll never forget them. I was sort of a closet intellectual living in the slums of Brooklyn during high school (Finding Forrester) and then I went into the military after high school and started to investigate where I came from (Antwone Fisher).

good films... I really liked Finding Forrester... But I liked Good Will Hunting as well.... Gus Van Sant directed both... similar movies in a lot of ways...bit of a hood reboot.

Catch me if you can was well done... leo was really good in that. I liked him most personally in that, and The Departed.
