Saving Private Ryan -- I've seen it before, but I just thought it was so so so much better the second time around. Had to hold back tears through parts. I'm sure you know which ones. Stayed awake til 6am watching it (son works nights, so he was awake and put it on about 3am or so, ended up staying up with him watching it). Without a doubt 5 Stars.

The maze runner. .8/10.. the books were great. . They did many things different in the movie but that always happens. It's a real good story line but I feel they could've added a little more from the book that would have made it better

Area 407 (Chiller TV fare)

(some spoilers below but since nobody has ever even heard of this film I figured it would not matter but instead prove helpful...)

Filmed entirely in the hand held point of view camera fashion, this movie is typical Chiller TV. I think it must have been written by the XKCD guy, who is terrified of Velociraptors lol :D

So we have a plane flying from NY to LA and crashes for reasons never disclosed in the film, which follows a small group of survivors who were in the tail section that broke off. Nothing is ever learned about anybody else from the plane, why it crashed, nothing. And of course it's night time, around midnight, and the entire film takes place that evening into the next early morning. There is something out there picking them off one by one pretty much, and mysterious people in a car who basically refuse to help. And A LOT OF SCREAMING that drove me bonkers throughout the film. And the one survivor stewardess, errrr, flight attendant, who takes command (or tries to) on the ground...lol...after she is GOT, then suddenly HEY this other woman suddenly is firing a handgun at Whatever-It-Is-Hunting-Them and discloses she is an Air Marshall. Oh really? And you're just NOW stepping forward to take command after much fighting / arguments / screaming / killing, etc...? Sure. Makes sense.

The Thing-Out-There is never seen until pretty much the last frame of the entire film. There were VERY fast and brief flash-glimpses, too fast to really tell or see anything, and only a couple of them at that.

Um.....for a Chiller fare scale, I guess 7 out of 10 .

If normal rating it would be more like a 3.5 out of 10.

Beneath (Chiller TV)

Meh. People on a little boat on a lake terrorized by a funky looking huge fishy. More laughs than chills.

Brake (2012)

Secret service agent taken hostage by terrorists wanting to know the location of the President's secret bunker.

So I thought I figured out the ending twist about halfway through the film, and sure enough, there it was...then they threw yet ANOTHER twist into the ending that I never saw coming. Nice job.

The Man With the Iron Fists (2012)

Never heard of this "RZA" person. Clearly he has zero acting ability though. David Bautista as a chinese guy? Sure, okay. Cast of a zillion Liu's, including Lucy. Russell Crowe did okay I guess. Points off for trying to make this a hip hop experience. Points off for all the physics defying crap. I hate that as much as many of you hate endless rounds in a gun. Points off for the whole "Quentin Tarantino presents" intro to this film. He had NOTHING to do with it. He lent his name to friends just to help them make money off this film.

Tusk - 5/10

Meh. I thought it was building towards something pretty good and creepy but it took a left turn a little over halfway through that completely derailed it.

12 Rounds (John CEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEnaaaaaaa!!!!)

Huh. Never heard of this film but accidentally recorded it. Somehow. My DVR must have been REEEEEEEEEEEALLY hungry for bad acting and so somehow snagged onto this. Oh, back in, uh, last January or so.

Think Die Hard 2 with Simon Says, kind of, and a very poor man's version of that. Cena was actually almost tolerable in this film. But overall? I should have re-watched Sharknado.

Movie sucked monkey round ones....... and yes the RZA sucks..... but wow, never heard of the RZA, head of the Wu-Tang Clan? Always interesting to know how something common can be uncommon to others.... QT did RZA favor with this one. They both shared a love for Martial Arts Flicks, and RZA had worked on the scores for both kill bills... Too bad RZA couldn't do anything with that favor...... what a horrible masterpoop.

Stoker 7.5/10
Chan-wook Park, master craftsman of "Old Boy" (the original, not that spike lee studio made crap), and and the "Lady/Mr. Vengeance" films, directs this completely out of the ordinary coming of age story starring Mia Wasikowska. Not only is Stoker an unusual coming of age story, its also a psychological thriller, mixing the two genres seamlessly, and leaving clues on who the main character (Wasikowska) will eventually become. This film is not for everyone, as it takes patience and a willingness to find the clues being left, its not a passive filmgoing experience.... but for those looking to be an active viewer, its a great ride... and done in less than two hour, which deserves credit as well........ Nicole Kidman, and Matthew Goode gives haunting performances, with Wasikowska giving the most haunting performance of them all.

(side note, I miss that most folks are shooting digital instead of film... this film, shot on film, shows the beauty that is being left behind.)

Wetlands (Feuchtgebiete) 7/10
Don't order popcorn when you go to see this German film, you may very well find yourself running to the bathroom,or eating it hardily, depending on your fetish.
One of the most unique filmgoing experiences I've ever had, its disgustingly beautiful. Wetlands, directed by new director David Wnendt, explores the sexual exploits of a young woman who is torn between being free with her body, yet secluded in her feeling for her family which made her the wild child she is... moving her awkwardly towards relationships. The Germans are much more free with the topic of sex than Americans (imo), so this isn't for the prudish. What helps is the lead actress, Carla Juri, is a cutie, so you can stand her disgusting habits, by saying "Meh, she's kinda hot" (shout out to brian for the "meh")..... Not to mention the filmmaking which visually brings to mind Jean-Pierre Jeunet's work (Amelie,Delicatessen,City of Lost Children, & Alien: Resurrection) Worth a watch for the bold, young, or daring......

The Maze Runner 5.5/10

The Young Adult Novel Genre is a financial giant in the film business, thanks to films like "The Twilight Series", & "Hunger Games". Its one of the few genres, besides comic book movies, and bankable action star lead films that studios are willing to invest in.
"Maze Runner" (I haven't read the books) takes on familiar themes as "The Hunger Games", although its approach and subtleties are different. Not much to speak about without giving away the films broad symbolism. But its a rebirth.... and obviously a messiah is amongst the rebirth (co-messiah's? Adam & Eve?). What make films like this weird to watch is you know everything is just a setup for the next film.... it's like a television show in the theater...... the next one I will watch in the comfort of my home.... Enjoyable for most, violence may be a little strong for kids under 12.

How is it not a 10/10? It's a classic. The multiple gratuitous "JCVD doing the splits" scenes, the "animal kung **" fighter, Bolo, the Stan Bush soundtrack, the 80's freezeframe ending, Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds, 80's board/brick breaking. It has it all.

I really enjoyed "Saving Private Ryan", I remember seeing that and "A Thin Red Line" within a week of each other. "A Thin Red Line" connected on a different level with me. "Saving Private Ryan" was about the filmmaking, the action, the technique, it was fast paced...... A Thin Red line was great filmmaking also, but it was graceful, thoughtful, and actually showed the common fear of the solders in war, regardless of what side they were on. Both really good experiences.... Spielberg & Malik are both great directors.... one knows how to make hollywood films, one only know how to make films in his own vein.... but the key is they are both making films, not movies, films.......

Saving Private Ryan 7.5/10

A Thin Red Line 8/10
