If there was a good LT to take in a later round of that draft I'd say take Watt with that first pick and grab the OT in a later round. In that draft, there is nothing in the later rounds as far as a good LT goes. So yeah, give me Smith to protect my investment at QB. This is coming from somebody who considers Watt one of my favorite players.

If they re-did the 2011 draft Dallas would not be able to get either Watt or Smith. They would both be gone before the Cowboys picked.

that is true then we would have ended up with solder or some other player and romo and our oline would be a mess right now. thankfully it did not happen that way.

it's too hard to call..

they are both very..very good at each respected positions.

flip a coin and you win no matter if it's head or tails.

You could turn this debate around -- age aside would you take JJ Watt or Joe Thomas?

Joe Thomas has been in the pro-bowl every single year of his career (7 years) and already been 1st team All-Pro 4 times (2nd team All-Pro twice).

He is the guy standing in the way of Tyron Smith being a 1st team All-Pro Left Tackle -- which is a vital ingredient to becoming a HOF player.

I suspect a lot of people here on CZ would would say "Yes, I'd take Watt over Joe Thomas".

I live 90 miles from Houston and have to travel there every weekend for my daughter to play on her select soccer team so I see a lot of Texans fans and to tell the truth they do believe JJ Watt walks on water. I can't really argue with them on the subject because he is a game changer.

Not to take anything away from Smith who is a great player himself.
He does walk on water.

Right now I would hate to have to pick between the two.

JJ. Watt could go down as the best DL of all time though.

Watt is the better player, but it's tough to complain about a tackle who earned a $100 million contract and anchors what is considered one of the top offensive lines. It's like Archer said in the piece, I'm sure the Cardinals (Peterson) and Bengals (Green) are equally pleased with their picks. Jacksonville, on the other hand...

Let JJ just find out that Smith is really stone cold...and JJ needs some more education and growth now.

No Sir, I'm not turning around to look...

I think Watt is very, very good... but no way is he better than Mean Joe Greene. As big of an impact as Watt has had, Greene had a bigger one. Phenomenal player and it is almost impossible to describe his impact on the game.

Mean Joe, Reggie White, Bruce Smith, Deacon Jones, John Randle, and quite a few others. Watt is a phenomenal player...but he's got a long way to go to earn the title of best ever.

As far as the pick...can't go wrong with either. Both are arguably the best at their respective positions, and amazingly, Tyron is still just 23 years old. Both are freaks athletically, who are capable of dominating their opponents.

The only reason i'd say Tyron is because what he has done for our offensive line as a hole. IMO, offensive line is more important than the defensive line. But Watt is one of the best players in the league. As is Tyron but of course you can't see it in the stats. Watt is a beast though. You can't go wrong. To be honest, you can't really go wrong with any of those guys picked in that top 11 aside from Locker and Gabbert. A very strong top 11 right there. Most of those guys are all Pro Bowlers.

Rocky, quick question...if another draft lines up with such talent, what direction would you chose to go this next season?

Tough call. Think I'd rather go with the D-lineman though.

Actually I don't know, it's an impossible decision.

Hmmm........well my approach has always been to stand pat and take the best player available. I don't believe in trading up or down in a draft. The trading down method is nice and thankfully we got Fredericks and T-Will but at the time I thought we should've got more value to go up that high in the draft like the 9ers did.

But to answer your question....i'd go any part of that defensive line. It has to be on the defensive end.

And I wouldn't be opposed to still upgrading that offensive line. We're not sure how much longer Free can hold up as well as Leary.

The game is built at the line on both sides of the ball. We owe it to Maranelli to start investing high draft picks into that line. So without being stubborn lol....i'll say defensive line.

It really is. I STILL believe in that 1st round you can go best player available. This is hypothetically of course but if another scenario comes up where a Dez Bryant type talent at receiver pops up? Do you pass him up? I don't. But that's hypothetically speaking. Dez was a rare case.

I'll take a dominate OL unit over an eliete DL anyday...

The 90's gave us the winning template that we're only just recently implimenting after all these years...

One more vote for Tyrone...

I'm still taking Tyron.

As good as JJ is, DTs, or even DL in general, for the most part, just don't have a ton of impact on the game. As big and strong as today's OL are, they just can't.

You can take JJ's 4-5 splash plays a game or Tyron totally wiping out every passrusher that comes at him...potentially 50 plays a game. That allows you to do so much more offensively.

Wow. Just wow.

Hey, bro. How are we going to replace Mo Claiborne? Talk me down off the ledge.

Watt is obviously great, but Smith is one of the best at his position as well. Im happy drafting a pillar of either line. The Cowboys have no need to want a redo.
