Re-draft question Smith vs JJ Watt

Eh...I think Watt won't ever be in the category of Bruce Smith, and is certainly nowhere near the Reggie White category.

I seem him as a guy that averages less than or right at 10 sacks a season, which is really really good, but note elite. He's just riding off that one really good season. And it was an excellent season, but he doesn't appear to be able to come close to that production outside of that one season.

If his stats don't improve, he won't even make the pro bowl this year, unless it's by name recognition alone.

You must be joking.

Watt is the easy choice. But it's not like Smith was a bad choice either. He's becoming one of the best offensive linemen in the league. He'll never be the best player in the NFL on his side of the ball though. Watt is probably the best defensive player in the NFL by far right now.

Look, just like my Olajuwon to Jordan comparison post, we did not make a mistake drafting Smith, he is a heck of a player and will be for years to come. But the sad truth is JJ Watt is better.

Who's truth? Yours? What a ridiculous comparison.

I would take Luke Kuechly over Watt.

If I had to do it today, I'd still pick Tyron Smith. A HOF LT for your QB's blindside are a lot more rare than a gifted pass rusher.

QB > LT > DE

You'd take Luck before you'd take Smith before you'd take Watt.

Not really. QB trumps all, but LT and DE are interchangeable. You take the better player when you are looking at two elite prospects. FWIW, Smith was the better prospect and thus should've been the pick. But 2 years in, Watt was the far better player. Not sure who will be going forward, but I am very happy to have Smith.

Definitely Smith, he was the beginning of draft right Cowboys, looking at what this offense is doing is proof enough. Having Watt would be nice but it would be the same as having Romo with the online from 2 or three years ago. One diamond and a bunch of cubic zirconia with a few gems that aren't worth very much without the diamond.

I never saw Bob Lilly play, but I imagine JJ Watt is probably the Texans' Bob Lilly. I doubt the Texans ever had nor ever will have a better defensive lineman in their history.

Best LT in the NFL or the best DT in the NFL?

Cant really go wrong with ether guy, both teams made out like bandits that draft................others not so much............LOL

there are only so many pairs of rose tinted glasses to go around, guys.....

Both are very good players and rare talents, but JJ Watt and it's not even close. The best you can hope for out of tyron smith on a given play is that he blocks his assignment, JJ Watt is a game changer, he has the potential to make those kinds of plays and he's really the only DL in the league who can do that. Tyron Smith is still young, and already elite, but there are other elite LTs in the game......there's only one JJ Watt.

And put it this way, tyron smith can only ever block one guy at a time. every other olineman's job is still just as hard. JJ Watt can eat up double teams, hurry quarterbacks, affect passing lanes, he literally makes every other defensive player's job easier.

A little too early to compare him to Lilly but I understand what you are saying. Texans are a young team, and Watt is what Lilly was to us in the early years. But I think Watt can have the same impact as well. Comparing apples to apples, there has not been too many interior DL who have put up the numbers AND laurels Watt has his first 3 years.
