Rebuilding the Defense

One immediate improvement that could be made would be to bring Rowdy in off the sidelines

Too many blown fundamentals, tackling/coverage, and assignments. Need to get this fixed first. Then it's a 100% personnel issue.

As I wrote in a response yesterday, here are the only players that are keepers next season, either based on contracts or recent draft picks:

Ez, Kneeland, Osa, Clark, Marist, James, Overshown, Bland, Revel.

Everyone else needs is replaceable. You can get cap savings with June 1 releases of both Diggs, Hooker.

1) need to find with right DC, right scheme moving forward and stick with it. Cannot keep on firing your DC every offseason and have the players learning and fitting into a new scheme. Hire a DC and add players that fit his style of defense.

2) must use all resources, fa, draft and trade market to improve the overall talent.

3) try to accumulate as many draft picks as possible, perhaps trading back to add more selections. They need a draft like the one Parcells had when we had two first rd picks: Ware, Spears, Burnett, Canty, Ratliff.

4) must stop targeting all world athletes, but rather high IQ, instinctive football players.
I have already given up on Kneeland and Liafau. They both suck.

So you’re saying “its impossible” because the chance Jerry does this is ZERO

The Cowboys are one man away from winning again. That's the GM. Until he is replaced this team will struggle because the senile old man running this team has no idea what he is doing. And, with each year, he gets worse.

The first thing the Cowboys need to change is stop destroying relationships with your best players. Micah was not the problem on defense. Diggs is not the problem in the secondary. Micah is gone and Diggs is probably on his way out. Who is next? Who are we going to blame next?

The Cowboys had an opportunity to help the defense in the 2025 draft. The draft was loaded with quality DTs. Derrick Harmon looks like he might be the next Fletcher Cox. How about a DTs like that playing next to Micah Parsons the next 4 or 5 years?

When the GM starts taking defense more seriously, the defense will improve. But using 7th round picks to build the middle of the DL is never going to work.

I’d blow it up. Release everyone on defense (kidding….mostly :D).

Honestly, I'd do what I could to resign Pickens, Fire Eberflus, hire a new DC, and spend the entire off-season rebuilding the defense. Talking draft and FA. Oh, and for the love of the game, STOP bringing in players from the bargain bin/1st round busts. It doesn't work.....as evidenced by this season. You think they would learn...................

Why is OSA a keeper? Is it just based on his contract? What exactly is he good at?

Jerry and company don’t have the patience to stick with that plan. His refusal to not be uncomfortable is killing the football team. Jerry will not use free agency because he doesn’t trust the market. Jerry has not gotten over his two free agents defensive failures during the Romo era. Willie made a good post yesterday about rebuilding the defense but we all know Jerry would never do that. He doesn’t trust his player development and free agency enough. What coach has Jerry ever taken a chance on that doesn’t have Cowboys or NFL ties.

We can cut Clark and save $21.5m CAP? If we're going for it now (which I agree) that money could be used in 2026 prorated signing bonus would for two decent/good defensive players .....if Jerry went for it.

This organization needs a complete change in philosophy.

1. The head coach needs to hire the DC
2. The style of defense the DC employs needs to change. Small quick guys who can't tackle aren't cutting it. Yes you will need some speed but you also need big guys who can tackle well. A NT and MLB are requirements to upgrade this defense.

Fix the defense in three steps.
1. Get rid of Eberflus
2. Draft all Defense in 2025
3. Fill in the gaps in FA
Ok. so how and when do we achieve Pt 1. Who are we going to poach, who's willing to come in,to coach the worst Defense, with limited job security and a woeful talent stream.

Let’s be honest about Clark and Osa. Solomon Thomas has been our best defensive tackle all season long. Clark needs to be let go in the offseason so we can get some more cap space and Osa was a product of Micah.

Thats why if we make a move, I hope its for Quinnen Williams or Jeffrey Simmons. I dont know if you save cap, but you get a legit gamechanger for that money Vs. a guy well passed his prime who is probably below league average now

no new DC...that would be 4th in 4 years and consistency and continuity is key.

I agree with the list you have. get rid of everybody else.

I can't tell you how bad this defense is and it all start with run defense which sets up the rest to be bad. we gave up almost 200 yards rushing yesterday and they were rushing at will. when teams can do that, they keep you on your heels. 2nd and 4, 2nd and 2....they can essentially run anything and you have no idea. the pass defense is even worse.

this defense is not athletic at all. they are slllloooowww over all. they are also stupid, add that to the slow and lack of athleticsm and they are always trailing. on top of that they can't tackle. can't tell you how many tackles they missed. by end of season, they will be the all time worst defense in the league. right now they are second to 2012 Saints.

It starts up front. The problem is the Joneses don’t plan anything. They let emotions get in the way. I believe they will panic and trade our high draft capital for Crosby. The Raiders will wait Jerry out and the owner/GM will panic. I see a 1st, 2nd and 4th in the 2026 draft for Crosby.
