Rebuilding the Defense

As I wrote in a response yesterday, here are the only players that are keepers next season, either based on contracts or recent draft picks:

Ez, Kneeland, Osa, Clark, Marist, James, Overshown, Bland, Revel.

Everyone else needs is replaceable. You can get cap savings with June 1 releases of both Diggs, Hooker.

1) need to find with right DC, right scheme moving forward and stick with it. Cannot keep on firing your DC every offseason and have the players learning and fitting into a new scheme. Hire a DC and add players that fit his style of defense.

2) must use all resources, fa, draft and trade market to improve the overall talent.

3) try to accumulate as many draft picks as possible, perhaps trading back to add more selections. They need a draft like the one Parcells had when we had two first rd picks: Ware, Spears, Burnett, Canty, Ratliff.

4) must stop targeting all world athletes, but rather high IQ, instinctive football players.
everything makes sense until jerry tells us flus is back for 26. :banghead:

They can create over 100 million of space even without touching Clark’s contract. It is up to them to spend the money, if they don’t only will get worse
Now you're living in fantasy world. Show me what that actually looks in 2027 and 2028.

we need to stick to one type of system for the D. Teams that perennially have top Ds like the Ravens and Steelers do it this way. The same model vehicle just a different driver

This aint hard.

We need a starter level (preferably pro bowl talent) at DT, another NFL ready edge, 2 LBs and a safety.

The current pool of resources at corner probably merits further wait and see/development time in the case of Revel as the stater opposite Bland.

If Revel were to not meet expectations a corner could be added to the list as well.

April's draft is the time to get started on this.

this D needs at least 8 new starters: 2 on the DL at least; two LBs ar least; Bland and two other CBs; and two new safeties

1) I strongly suspect Eberflus will be the DC next season if for no other reason than you can't keep firing your DC every offseason.
Yup.....Uberpuss gets another season here.

Jerry will tell us that injuries to the defense were the cause of this abomination

Smart as a system doesn't work when just based upon a protective guidance not really based upon defeating who is head up with you. At least have a functional result for using a rope - a - dope.

I'm at 5 but after a showing like yesterday I can see as needing as many as 8 could be warranted as well.

Jerry doesn't rely upon injury excuses to address play. He has a medical staff to wear blames.

and we have 31M on the cap!!!! stupid Jerry. he threw bodies at the problem hoping some of it works out. well, its all coming down crashing. this defense SUCKS
This is the best thing that could of happened, they almost have no choice but to try to fix it. If we see similar low level moves, we know they don't care about winning and when Dak retires, it's back to the Campo years.

Jerry and company don’t have the patience to stick with that plan. His refusal to not be uncomfortable is killing the football team. Jerry will not use free agency because he doesn’t trust the market. Jerry has not gotten over his two free agents defensive failures during the Romo era. Willie made a good post yesterday about rebuilding the defense but we all know Jerry would never do that. He doesn’t trust his player development and free agency enough. What coach has Jerry ever taken a chance on that doesn’t have Cowboys or NFL ties.
With zero defense, expect pretty much the same, but when Dak leaves the franchise is picking inside the top 5 again.

Can’t argue with any of that. Basic stuff that any nfl GM would see. If only we had one of those lol

We can talk about the players all we want but if our Defensive coordinator can’t teach guys what to do defensively I don’t care who we have out there.

The whole thing is a mess & it starts with his inability to coach players.

I’ve never seen a team have as many coverage busts as this team.

Parsons trade is a failure, if they don't use that extra cap space created to rebuild the unit, along with using both those extra picks on defense.

Doesn't mean they will spend or create that space, but they have the ability to do so.
Money isn’t the issue. A real plan with a real GM to carry it out is the issue. I’m convinced there are guys here who could do a better job than Jerry. He’s not an idiot but his ego controls his thinking. He won’t let a real football guy make the decisions that need to be made

Eberflus deserves blame, but these players also have to take accountability for their poor play. There are times when you see the perfect call, yet they fail to execute. First play at Carolina for example, called a run blitz and Thomas flat out misses the tackle, gain of 9 yards.
