As has been discussed before, that's a rather loose interpretation of what Stewart actually said.
..there was more comment at the time as I remember about RW's roles and what was the future in the defensive secondary..not so much that the changes were necessarily aimed directly at RW and his play.
I believe there was some leading statements about the age setting in with TNew and Henry and their upcoming contracts and was Jenkins and Scandrick going to be counted on immediately this year but also being projected as starters in a couple of years.
I beleive the answer again was "yes, but"..
..so why isn't everybody jumping all over those open-ended dangling statements, too..?
You know, it seems each year there is some player that is pointed out to not be living up to expectations. Last year, Roy Williams.
The year before that, Bradie James was a piece of junk that couldn't cover or tackle anybody and after the NO game we got crushed in, the mantra was to get rid of Bradie James at any cost. He was a huge bust.
Then the year before that, TNew was not meeting expectations because he wasn't getting enough ints. and wasn't playing well enough to be in the Pro Bowl and there were concerns about his being as advertised.
And the year before that, well..whatever.
I agree RW needs to play better and get his issues resolved so he just plays and quits thinking so much.
Maybe if other teams are trying to isolate on RW is part of the problem, why don't we do a better of job of moving him around and disguising our coverages so that doesn't happen so much and RW is in a position to be more disruptive instead of being a passive defender..?
I prefer to ask better questions than to just grind away on the obvious ones. This I beleive is the 3rd defensive scheme that RW and the other players have had to absorb in the last 4 years.
First there was the 4-3 under Zimmer, then he's asked to install a 3-4 defense then he's let go and shortly, along comes Phillips with his version of the 3-4.
That's a lot of changes in scheme and coaches in a short period of time and some players may not really handle it all that well immediately and need a period of adjustment.
And one other thing that stuck out at me that's Phillips broadcasted loud and clear when he became head coach in Dallas..something to the effect that he adapted the Phillips 3-4 to the talent of the players on hand to make it work and not the other way around.
So far with RW in particular, I think that's a blown statement. I haven't seen it yet. And he's not the only one not raising their game under these conditions..
Spears is barely breathing in this defense and we just got rid of Ayodele in a trade because he wasn't doing anything but regressing...
..Carp our #1 pick from 2 years ago is also tweaked about adjusting to the schemes and he can't find any traction, either.
For a guy who's been a Pro Bowler for 5 out of 6 years in his career and who last year accounted for like 113 tackles in this supposedly SB-quality defense..
..it's a bit of a stretch to say RW is not worth what we are paying him and he's a bum and walking a short plank playing for us with credentials like that.
