RECAP: T-new on Sirius

Well it was just supposed to be a Newman interview, but Akin was driving by and saw Newman's car parked outside the radio station.

So he broke in through a window, snuck his way to the studio, snapped the radio engineers neck and started screaming, "Why don't they love me no more! Why!?!".

He needs to just shut the heck up and let Jerry worry about the finances. I like T Newman but he is far from irreplaceable.

Oh really? Where else you going to go today and find a CB to replace him? Pro bowl CB's don't exactly grow on trees.

I think CB is the most overrated position in football, just my opinion. I would take a couple of average corners and 2 or 3 D. Ware's over 3 Newman's anyday of the week.

How many D Wares are there and how many good cover corners are there? D Ware's aren't just falling from the trees.

The question is would you take 3 D Wares over 3 Champ Baileys or 3 Deion Sanders?

Gee thats interesting...75-80% of this board believes there's no way we can win a super bowl unless we spend two or three high draft picks on backup CB's

This could be grounds for an immediate, lifetime expulsion from the Zone. If we don't leave this draft with 3 CB's we probably won't make the playoffs.

You can have 3 T. Newmans and 3 Kavika Pittmans. I will take 3 Larry Browns and 3 D. Wares.

I will take the guys that disrupt the timing of plays and wreak havok over a solid cover corner every time. How many "big" plays has Newman made since he got here?

The Giants showed last year in the playoffs that it is all about getting to the QB not who is in the secondary. I like Newman but he is anything but unbeatable and he is not even in the same league as Deion, not even close. Jimmy Johnson was able to put some strong defenses on the field by finding hard hitting ball hawks and guys who could win the battles in the trenches.

And they may be right, I just dont agree with that philisophy. The Colts and Steelers with 2nd and 3rd in pass defense last season and neither of them have great corner tandems.

Your argument is still incredibly one sided. I know every team likes to refer to the last team that won the superbowl as to how their team should be built.

Last year, the Colts proved you could do it with a superb offense and plugs on defense, a young and versibtile running back, as long as it gels at the right time.

The Steelers proved you need a good defense with quality linebackers and a strong secondary to go with tremendous running.

The Patriots proved you can do it with aging linebackers, smart veterans, a smart offensive line and a talented defensive line even if you have mediocre receivers.

and so on.

The Chargers had the most sacks in 2006. No Superbowl.
The Seahawks had the most sacks in 2005. No Superbowl.
The Falcons had the most sacks in 2004. No Superbowl.

There are far too many variables to look at cornerbacks and point them out as the singular most overrated position.

And this is all coming from someone that considers linebackers his most favorite position on an entire football team.

I agree with what you are saying, all I am trying to say is you cant have superstars at every position in today's NFL. My own personal opinion is to spend the money on the front 7 first on defense and on the offensive side of the ball. I dont think Newman is worth 10 million a year.

We seem to be playing quite a bit of zone unde Wade. Giants, Pats and several others have shown you can win the ordinary secondaries if the front 7 is really good.

I would let Newman walk and start drafting corners. The $10M/year can be better used elsewhere on the roster.

I think one of Jones' big mistakes was paying too much for pedestrian OL players and this has handicapped us to some degree. A few more years of good drafting can rectify this.

BTW, something I forgot to ask... So Akin was actually interviewed as well? In the earlier post, I thought they were just referring to the reports at the time that he wasn't happy about Zach being signed. Didn't realize that they actually had a fresh interview with him.

He was saying he didn't know what that meant for him that he'd sit down with Jerry and Wade and figure it out. If he was still wanted to make plays he'd play if not he'd have to figure out where else he'd go

The Giants 2007 most Sacks - Won Superbowl
Pats 2007 -2nd in Sacks - Lost Superbowl

2005
Seahawks 1st Sacks-Lost Superbowl
Steelers - t3rd in Sack - Won SB

2004-
Pats - T3rd in sacks - Won Superbowl
Eagles - 2nd in Sacks - Lost Superbowl

2003 -
NE 6th in Sacks - Won SB
Carolina 7th In Sacks - Lost SB

2002 -
TB- t6th in sacks - Won SB
Oak- T6th - Lost SB

top 5 in Sacks gives you a nice shot at the SB

I think what a lot of people are saying about CB's being over rated is that the rules have taken so much away from DB's and given to WR's that they aren't as "lock down" as they once were

I dont agree with it either...nobody is spending multiple 1st rd picks and tons of free agent dollars on the CB position...

I think we def need to use 1 top pick on a CB depending on who slides and falls. We def need to invest in the position as a whole. I'm not saying we need 3 top CB's to win a SB but I AM saying due to contracts, age, injuries and such that 3 Jacque Reeves will keep us from going anywhere

Again, there are plenty of variables to throw into this argument. I never said defensive pressure was a bad thing.

I could go down that list and bring up a counter point, which someone could counter, and then counter that. There are a lot of things that go into making a good football team.
