Absolutely. If this kid comes in next year and if by his second year his making the pro bowl at MLB or at least playing like it, then he could very well be one of the best picks in the draft. WE can only hope that Jones finally hits on one of his swing for the fence 2nd round picks and that Jaylon is that guy. Like I said, I dont mind the pick so much because its long term thinking and not short term.

This draft had the right mix of long and short term.

Elliott gave Romo, the offensive line, and the defense a playmaking back to make all three better right now.

Then, it was all defense, where the issues lie. Defenses are tough to build in quick order. Jalen Ramsey makes almost no difference. It takes 5-6 collective guys to really make a difference on defense.

Perhaps Jones, Thornton, J Smith, Tapper, Collins, and Lawrence are the beginning of that. I expect another defense heavy draft next year.

I am not so sold. Good angle, but I dont think they are that smart. If you are trying to build a championship team, then you take defense especially with the first pick.

When Garrett and McClay managed to wrestle the draft away from Jerry, look at what they had.

The offensive line was in shambles. The defense was full of old codgers. Barber was going nuts, as was Marty B. The secondary was decrepit.

The Cowboys are now young. They have the best young offensive line in the NFL. They're young on defense with potential.

This year, they found this o-line its Dorsett/Emmitt. Then it was a bunch of defense and a QB.

No I heard all of that too. And I agreed on the Bosa front. Ramsey was the guy I wanted. But I fully acknowledge the success that a great back like Zeke will have here in this offense. I just felt it was the wrong time to take a back and the wrong pick to use on a back. I do love Zeke, however, and love the fact that running the ball will now be a focus of this team.

As far as defense, some in the "win now" camp argued that defensive players dont make an impact their first year and so Zeke would give us a better chance to do something THIS year.

Fair enough. Maybe I was more tuned into the arguments that we shouldn't take Ramsey or Bosa for the reasons I mentioned previously.
Maybe I wasn't paying attention to the arguments that a rookie defensive player wouldn't help us this year.
I think that's an argument without merit considering the recent example of Byron Jones, who did help us last year.

To be fair, I don't think anybody is saying a rookie defensive player wouldn't help. I think they're saying it wouldn't help as much as a rookie rb.

I think its difficult for any rookie to really have a big impact the first year. RB's being a big exception. Defensive players really dont get going until their second year at least. But in my opinion, that is more of a reason to draft them first and sooner rather than later.
