Reggie Ragland will miss the 2016 season

That's a pretty glib take on what the doctor has said. He's confident about the timeline of a potential nerve recovery, but he's made no assurance that 1) it's actually going to happen and 2) that the nerve is going to fire and if it does that it'll be at 100% functionality (which is the other part that folks are looking past; the nerve may not reinnervate at 100% and the net affect would be only a partially functioning foot.)
But they feel it is more likely than not to fully heel.

in all fairness - you can gamble 10x and if one works out - such as we hope this one will - how do you make up for your screw ups in someone like gregory?

there's a reason jones catches so much flack.

Do you blame Stealer GM Kevin Colbert for the Martavis Bryant and Leveon Bell suspensions? Most here agreed with the risk vs reward when Gregory was drafted. Many thought he was worth the risk. I would not call the Gregory pick a screw up. The results are not what we hoped for but the selection was worth the risk at the time and it may still pan out if he can turn kick whatever habit he has.

I loved the Gregory pick. But then I never knew truly how screwed up this kid was. I never thought it would be possible for anyone to be so mentally sick or so stupid as not to be able to quit smoking pot for your career or your life. Jones knew and still picked the kid.

here's to hoping Jaylon Smith is very good to great by late next season.
However...
Pretty sure the closest comp to Smith for Dallas would be Miles Jack or maybe Noah Spence.

Here are some options as I saw them:

pick at 34:
Myles Jack
Sterling Shepard
Noah Spence (maybe)
Reggie Ragland (maybe)
Derrick Henry (if we hadn't taken a RB yet)
Michael Thomas (maybe)

small trade up (so lose a 4th, gain a 5th)
Kevin Dodd
Vernon Bulter
Emanuel Ogbah

small trade down (so get a 4th)
Mackenzie Alexander
Sua Cravens
Vonn Bell

And btw, Jaylon Smith at his peak may have been a top 5 talent according to some scouts...I would not argue that.
But that is NOT the player we drafted. Given the nature of his injury, he may even have not been worth a 3rd rounder.
So I wish people would stop saying Dallas got two top 5 talents.

One more thing: if you take a player in the2nd round or later knowing they won't play for a year, by definition you just capped you 1st contract return at 3/4 total value. And they can leave if they want after those 3 years.

Bottom line now, is I 'll pull for the guy 100%,

The point is, players are lost for the season fairly commonly anyway. Dallas got two top-five talents in the first two rounds.

The Cowboys doctors aren't that worried about the nerve re-firing. They just don't know when.

Isnt it amazing how we hear this same thing every year.

These guys that got hurt werent bad picks they were bad luck. Picking a guy that may never play and definitely not for a year might simply just be a bad pick. Only the future can tell. But one thing we know for sure he is doing nothing this year.

And?? Those players picked at the time were ready to go. No one can predict future injuries like these.

Does not make our pick of a player with nerve damage who could possible never play a down in this league a good pick seeing how desperate we were for defensive players who could play right away. Especially at a premium pick.

This is dumb logic.
I'm just pointing it out there bud. No "logic" intended.

Look at the bright side. Jaylon will not get injured this year.

But it flies in the face of the "win now what is best for this year" mantra of Jones and the FO as was with the Zeke pick.
How did the Zeke pick suggest it was "win now what is best for this year" mantra? Everyone breathing air knows the best pick for the Cowboys if they are in win now mode was a defensive player.

Maybe, or it might be the best pick in the entire draft.

It may or may not end up that way. In retrospect, there's no doubt that Jaylon's 2nd round pick would have been much easier to digest if we hadn't needed defensive help so desperately in the here and now. That's Jerry's MO, though and that isn't likely to change. Of course, the reality is that nothing can be done now but to hope for the best for Jaylon Smith and the Cowboys. No point crying over spilled milk, as they say.

I tend to agree with Roy on this one.
A RB can step right in while a defensive player may take a year or two.

Half the first round will bust. Risk is everywhere.

I'd rather take a risk on high integrity guys with superior talent coming off injury than, say, Randy Gregory.

yet the Jaylon Smith pick is still hated. When he wins Defensive rookie of the year next year, im going to remember all of those comments.
Dont think he would be eligible but I could be wrong

I know in the NBA you are if you miss your true rookie season

I'd venture to say some of us feel that way and some don't. Ideally, it's best to have those superior talents healthy, both mentally and physically.

but what if Jack plays at a pro-bowl level for 3/4 years and Smith either never recovers or recovers but really isn't the same player? Or both Jack and Smith turn out to be terrific but Jack has an extra season (rookie year) of production before both of their rookie contracts expire?
I'm surprised that we skipped on Jack when we picked up Leary with a similar condition and he's been great for us.
Certainly anything can happen (Jax and Fowler last year) and I realize we went off of our doctors' guestimations, but I just thought we should've bet on Jack over Smith at that point in the draft. Not sure but Smith might've even been available at our third pick.
Wasnt a fan of taking Jack. Jack had immense upside but he wasnt a finished product and still had alot of development to go before he is an game changing NFL LB. A potentially drastically shortened career really limits your returns. Jack isnt a day 1 Pro Bowler IMO

Getting him is like getting a free top 5 pick next year
I hated the pick knee jerk. But if your patient it has the ability to be a defense changing pick. He can play both Will and Mike in our defense. Two intrigal positions in any Tampa 2 variant

I think all things being equal (in terms of health), Jaylon Smith (IMO) was the better prospect as a linebacker. Myles, in college, was a victim of his own versatility; there's a lot of unknown to his game as linebacker. That said, Myles has all the physical tools to be outstanding.
And thats one of my issues with Jacks situation. Jacks not a finished product in a way a guy like Willis was. It will likely take him a year or so to really fund his groove in the NFL, and add to that he may have a very very short shelf life.

IMO both him and Smith were taken too high

Imagine if we have a perennial allpro keuchely type of lb to go along with 3 or 4 more years of pro bowl level Sean Lee. Ahh now that's something to look forward to
