Report: Cowboys' Mazi Smith may be dealing with struggles beyond field

Letting Hankins go for 2 million dollars and depending on Mazi becoming a young Hankins was a stupid move. Especially knowing he needed to put weight back on. Unless one of our players is going to be good then we better get a big run stuffer in FA..

So naive but if you haven’t noticed there’s a new DC in town with, apparently, a totally new way for each position to play the way they had before. So just because of the new system, the run game will be better with or without Mazi.
The naive thing here is the belief that if Smith bombs, Zimmer is so great he’ll turn a bunch of JAGs into a quality run stopping group.

Even the best coaches need talent. The Cowboys gave Zimmer little this offseason.

Broaddus looks like a registered ____ offender (if you know what I mean) in many of the pics he takes so not sure why he is speculating on anyone’s mental health.

And Zimmer sucks so he wouldn't get the job done with good talent anyway.

Well, ...... that's certainly a strong take.

Basically it sounded like Broaddus was hearing (hinting at) Mazi lacked the mental makeup to be a number one pick of the highest profile team in sports and play under the brightest of lights. Further the disappointing play led led to an emotional downward spiral that fed on itself as the season progressed. That is what it sounded like Broaddus was getting at to me.
If this is true he’s not the only one….but I will say guys leave here and rarely perform better after they leave. Maybe the damage is done by then…

Yeah I don’t know how Jerry and his son look these coaches in their eye and say win when the team is so flawed. These guys seem to be auditioning for jobs elsewhere but things can go so bad they may not get a look.

Screw Mazi and Bryan, they both suck
I know 2 people who have lost their early 20's sons due to mental health issues. Not only is your comment uncalled for, it's actually ignorant and you clearly are out of touch with the effects mental health can have upon people of all ages

the willful arrogance of the Joneses knows no bounds. In an effort to convince the fans and the media, that they are football guys, is killing the team. Letting Hankins walk, then not finding a good free agent to address the hole left, was beyond dumb. Coaches need decent players or all the coaching in the world is meaningless. We are left with a shoestring hope that Mazi will somehow do something, then we have a 7th round guy in Rogers, and a UDFA Denzel Daxon...oh and a low end free agent named Carl Davis thats over 32 years old and has never been good. We are in trouble unless we make a trade for a guy.

I know what you mean and that is nonsense. He might be speculating but he is back in the building and has contacts all over the building.

If Mazi doesn't make the jump this season, we're screwed.
Exactly right. Besides Mazi at DT, I also believe that Sam Williams at EDGE and Tolbert at WR3 have to make the jump this season as well. With the shape of our RB group - they all 3 have to make the jump or we are definitely screwed

One thing I noticed last year is how small Smith looked compared to Hankins. We all know Mazi lost a lot of weight, which is a yellow flag in itself. But if he is going to be a 1T he needs to get a lot bigger. In the picture in this article, he looks like a LB.

I guess at this point we have to wonder why they picked him. If he admits he doesn't like football, then he will never give 100% on the football field. Liking to hit people is not enough because when those people are hitting back harder it can be demoralizing. Like Mike Tyson said, "everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth."

I am not trying to be insensitive, but football players have to play angry with focus. Guys feeling sorry for themselves, or brooding over their inability to play well are useless.

Maybe Broaddus is wrong. I hope so, but it Mazi does not make a major improvement this year, the Cowboys defense will struggle. And again, we knew DT was a weakness. What did they do to fix the problem? and don't tell me the answer is Carl Davis.

Time to trade for one, or enjoy another season of getting getting run on.
