Here's my issue with Jackson. One, he's a guy that got by in college on pure athleticism. He has some fundamental issues. You saw him struggle at times with guys that had a skill set that he'd see more often in the NFL, trying to let athleticism cover up some fundamental issues. He also seems to project to a slot CB more than anything. As said above, I am not sure spending a #1 on a slot CB makes much sense from a value perspective.
Finally, this whole notion that he's also a great returner. It's bogus. Here's why. How many teams use their primary CB or RB or WR as their main kick/punt returner? Very few, if any, other than a situational return here or there. So if Jackson becomes a starting CB and key player for us, they won't use him on returns much anyway. So his value as a returner isn't really there for us. And if he only develops into a backup type CB where they then use him a lot on returns, you aren't getting value in the first round picking what is essentially a kick/punt returner.
The best thing about Jackson is................ he's not T White. Now that would be a CB pick in the first I would have a real issue with.
I tend to agree with your assessment.
He might turn out great, but he was overly reliant on this athleticism in college. His lack of length (5'9-3/4", 31-3/8") has to be a concern.
It seems that teams sometime let a rookie starter return punts/kicks, but by their 2nd or 3rd year a starter is not returning punts/kicks. A small player is already at a higher risk of injury than bigger players.
He was an exciting college player, but if he is not a starter at outside CB, then it's a failed 1st round pick. At #60 I would be OK with him as a slot CB and punt/kick returner. It's still probably not the ideal situation for 2nd round pick, but #60 is almost a 3rd.
