Wade wanted Mike Solari... Maybe Jerry should've listened to the head coach?

He has a habit of not doing that very often.

Report: Wade Phillips 'completely safe'

Cowboys Defense - TM - DAL - Dec. 22 - 6:14 pm et ESPN's Chris

Mortensen said Monday that he sees Cowboys coach Wade Phillips' job as "completely safe" beyond this season.

While a loss at Philly in Week 17 would potentially end Dallas' season and have most Cowboys fans calling for Phillips' head, Mort says the struggling economy could weigh into owner Jerry Jones' decision. Mortensen also says Jones is a man of his word and has repeatedly said Phillips' job is safe.

I am puzzled. What exactly does that mean? Jerry Jones can't afford another coach? He does not want to put Phillips on the street in tough economic times?

I suppose. :laugh2:

That's why I found it funny.

I mean, I don't think he'd have a hard time finding work in the NFL if he got let go.

Mort has said before on Mike & Mike that many coaches who ordinarily might've been fired this offseason will retain their job because their owners don't want to pay them the $5M+ the coach and his staff will be owed, plus what they have to pay to a new staff.

I don't know Jerry's situation otherwise, but it's not unthinkable that he might have to consider it. I have no idea as to Garrett and Wade's buyouts, nor to what would be owed the rest of the staff, but it could be significant, even for Jerry Jones.

He probably doesn't want to pay the remainer of his contract after firing him.

I thought Phillips was only signed for four years. How much are we paying him?

At any rate, this is sad if true. We have to keep a substandard coach because of an economic issue that behaves like a salary cap.

I agree but I'm just guessing. I want to see him gone also.

I seriously doubt a few million dollars isn't going to decide whether Wade stays or not.

PHILLIPS TO BE BACK FOR THE ‘BOYS?

Posted by Mike Florio on December 22, 2008, 11:31 p.m.

Another very intriguing nugget shared by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen on Monday Night Countdown is that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn’t plan to part ways with coach Wade Phillips.

Jones, per Mort, cited the economic climate and the looming labor problems as factors for his current inclination to bring Phillips back.

This tells us a couple of things. First, even the richest of the rich folk are feeling the pinch of the recession, given that Jones apparently isn’t inclined to pay Phillips (and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett) a seven-figure buyout, and then to pay a new coach with a big name really big money.

Second, the league and the union could indeed be on a collision course for a work stoppage, and Jones doesn’t want to be paying Bill Cowher or Mike Holmgren $9 million or so per year to coach an empty locker room come 2011.

The big-picture reality, however, is that the team has not yet bottomed out in Jones’ mind, even after that embarrassing loss to close out Texas Stadium.

Or maybe Jones knows that it has, but that as a practical matter there’s nothing he can or will do about it other than keep his head down, and keep pushing forward.

Hopefully Jerry tells Wade he has to make some changes if he wants to return.

What in the world does the economy have to do with who coaches the Dallas Cowboys? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard......:lmao2:

I believe that was explained. It's all about Jerry, even tho he's a billionaire, not wanting to write off millions of dollars on a new coaching staff.

What's also not mentioned is that the financing for the stadium has been difficult to obtain. They've gotten it, of course, but it's tough times for mega projects. Half of that cost for that stadium is coming out of his own pocket. If he's been hit hard by some bad investments, I could see him eye-balling the bottom line.

Jerry would lose more money even in a tight economy by not firing the Headcoach. It saids a bad signal for a new 1 billion dollar stadium and one with the most expensive psl's ever

Yep he will lose more than that if he keeps Wade
