Johnny Football has never had to work...for anything. He grew up a rich trust fund baby, driving a brand new Mercedes to school. He never had to work. He was able to win at A&M with natural talent, but that's not enough in the NFL. I said going to rehab was a PR stunt, and I was correct. If he comes to Dallas, even as a backup, I expect the distraction to be too big for even Garrett to handle. It will affect our season.

Who would you rather sign as a backup? Post your choice and what they bring to the table.
RG III:
While not the best defense reader he can extend plays and get plus yardage with his feet. Similar to Romo, but not as good.
Running alone - he has lost the top level speed he could get to from early in his career.
Passing alone not the best.
Team player - still up in the air as a starter. How he handles back up role and tries to learn is up in the air.
I feel either he quit on the Commanders when he was not starter or they both quit on each other.
Team Chemistry - he will not disrupt team by being out at party central every night.

Johnny:
Reading defenses still up in the air - needs more time in system and on field.
Can extend plays with feet. Very close to Romo in this regard.
Passing alone - needs work and better talent around him. With this O line he would prosper.
In Cleveland he was hit or miss come game day.
Team Chemistry - This will be one big distraction throughout the year with the stories in the press.

My vote would to see what RG III has to offer in training camp. And go from there.
Johnny and the circus - Pass on it.

About time this tread came along! Never thought I'd see this. A grateful forum salutes you, mate!

Not to derail your thread but I rather have Colt McCoy and a Rookie First Rounder. So if Romo can't answer the bell then at least We'll be competitive and the Rook can sit at least a year.

No this is good.
Thanks for the input.

Not a bad suggestion but, is Colt McCoy a FA or is it a sure thing that he will hit the market? I'm still not sure about a first round QB at #4 who
sits on the bench for 2 or 3 years. We need players who can help Romo and Witten get to a SB and I think that's what Jerry wants also.

I looked in over the CAP and do not see him there.

RG3 by a mile. While he's clearly not starting QB caliber, we aren't bringing him in to start. Manziel is the worst combination of no talent plus no work ethic plus off field distraction.

Manziel is just a kid. He does have a chance of maturing and becoming a good player.
He's a 23 year old professional entering his 3rd year in the NFL, not a "kid." If he hasn't gotten it by now, he ain't getting it.

but until he takes his drinking as a problem seriously, it won't change. to trigger this change is usually a drastic event and not that often just some form of self-realization.

one reason i am pulling hard for him as a person is i hope he can get it under control *and* not have it affect his life. however, that said drinking or not i'd just as soon not have him as our qb.

look, just because it doesn't seem to be taking doesn't mean it was a stunt. if this is his first run, i'd have to agree likely. maybe even an honest effort to just say "hey, time i grew up". but there's a huge gap between "great idea" to execution and it seems he has a tough road ahead at least for now.

It's pretty much pick your poison between RG3 and Manziel. Things have gone so bad for Manziel he's receiving grief counseling from Tim Tebow.

Say NO TO JOHNNY! I don't want to deal with that circus. We have had enough of these types of distractions over the past 20 years

Neither.

But gun to my head? RG3 and I don't think twice about it.

NFL is full of kids. in fact every year 200+ get drafted and about as many join as UDFA. successful ones, specially at QB position understand it and get it. Manziel is selfish. he doesn't understand his selfish actions impact other players on his team, the league and the organization. there are a lot of QBs who get drafted each year. they may bomb as a QB because they are not talented. but at least they work hard at it. they don't party it up, show up hungover and then when the team tries to cover up for him, miss his appointment.

Manziel is done. end of story.

Many seem to be thinking in terms of a long term fill in for Tony.

I am thinking more of a one or two game fill in to keep us in the race with a stronger NY and Wash.

So which of these two would you want the season to depend on for a single game?
For me it would be RGiii. Why?
Because I believe he would take his backup position seriously and invest in the weekly preparation to step in on very short notice. As in the next play.
I am not sure that level of responsibility would come with a JF.

In a street fight give me RG3, but in the octagon I'll take Mr. Football.

How many 23 year old kids needs to be judged by their actions at that age? 23 is still really young. If he reaches 25-26 and still has the same problems, he probably will never change, but for now, he is still growing up. Yes, I am implying that a 23 year old is not going to make the most mature decisions.
