Have to go with Spears. He is younger and will not be expensive like Seymour. Need to pay players who have paid their dues to the team like Miles Austin.

I assume you mean we need 2-3 more difference makers. Well if you want to surpass the 2000 Ravens or 1985 Bears, than ya sure that would be neccessary.
But I don't see the "need" for 2-3 more star type performers. Our defensive roster is loaded. How many teams do you really think wouldn't trade thier defensive roster for ours in a heartbeat?
I think one star player at FS is all we need to field the league's best defense in 2010. And I'm not sure we can't or wont have the best defense without that player.

All of those DE's had great sack totals, where Spears only has 5.5 sacks since Wade came to Dallas in 07'. But basically Spears is a perfect fit for Parcells' 3-4 scheme, where you were only responsible for one gap and allowing linebackers to make the plays. In Wade's scheme it's a multiple gap scheme with a lot more stunting and blitzing, allowing the defensive line to make more plays. Spears hasn't really adjusted to Wade's scheme, and may be better suited as a DT in a 4-3 scheme or a DE in a one gap 3-4 scheme.

They may line up 5a or 5b in the base but they do not play the gaps. I don't know why this other nonsense is being constantly spewed because that's not our base defense. They are not lined up in the B or C gap in our base defense.
TheSport78;3266275 said:I understand that Spears does a great job in the base defense when his responsibility is to hold the OT, but when he gets an opportunity to rush the passer when a possible stunt is called, he's almost non-effective. He's a one-dimensional, solid player but will never make the Pro Bowl or have a double-digit sack season. The guy has 8 sacks in his entire CAREER.

jobberone;3266289 said:OK, I agree. But rushing the passer in not the job of the DEs in the base defense which is much of the time. We use Ratliff, the OLBs and the ILBs to rush the passer in most non-passing downs. This is why I keep repeating that Seymour is not going to lend as much as the money he will cost. He is an upgrade. Not so sure in the run department but definitely in the rush department. But what do you think Bowen and Hatcher are for. If he can be had cheap enough I'm all for it but I doubt he will come as cheap as the other DEs. Not nearly.

TheSport78;3266212 said:You're probably right, but going to have a great career in the NFLI think Earl Thomas is and he'll most likely be available at #27. DE's are such a crapshoot in the draft anyway, it's impossible to tell who's going to pan out. Look at Aaron Maybin from the Bills, the guy was drafted #11 I believe, had trouble seeing the field and didn't record a single sack. The only player I would consider trading up out of the three positions is Rolando McClain, but he'll probably be a top ten pick.

If ppl want to say move him to OLB, we already have ware and spencer. having seymour too would take away from our yong guys reps mainly victor butler, jason williams, and carpenter in certain packages). there has to be a reason the pats traded him, other than stealing a #1. imo its bc he is up there in age and his bests days are behind him.

Hostile;3266116 said:I think Spears is better against the run and with our OLBs and Ratliff being the primary pass rusher threats I prefer the DEs be run stuffers. Familair, good character, and cheaper.
I'll take Spears if his price is reasonable.
The Realist;3266532 said:Did you really just say Seymour more a 4-3 DE and not a good fit for a 3-4 end?
A 6-6/310 OLB?
Mods please, can we do something?
