Richard Seymour or Marcus Spears?

Have to go with Spears. He is younger and will not be expensive like Seymour. Need to pay players who have paid their dues to the team like Miles Austin.

What defense were you watching this year?

I assume you mean we need 2-3 more difference makers. Well if you want to surpass the 2000 Ravens or 1985 Bears, than ya sure that would be neccessary.

But I don't see the "need" for 2-3 more star type performers. Our defensive roster is loaded. How many teams do you really think wouldn't trade thier defensive roster for ours in a heartbeat?

I think one star player at FS is all we need to field the league's best defense in 2010. And I'm not sure we can't or wont have the best defense without that player.

Earl.....Thomas.....please

Spears, unless we can get the Seymour from 4-5 years ago.

Seymour over Spears as a player and great fit for us is a no brainer. We're a better defense with him no question about it.

But to really make a choice between the two, you need more info. Basically what it will cost to sign each player?
If Seymour costs twice what Spears will, then I'll take Spears.

Spears will do for our scheme. We give up pass rush, that we'd probably gain from Richard, but Richard I dont think is quite as good against the run as Spears.

So we'd be paying Richard a considerable amount more money to increase us a few sacks a year but the downside, along with all that money, is that he wouldn't be as good against the run.

I like Spears for the right price but i do think Richard is the better pass rusher, for sure.

I would take Spears, he is younger, cheaper and he fits Wade's system.

I forget who and where the stat was posted, but someone had a history of the DE's in Wade's scheme with sacks in a season. All of those DE's had great sack totals, where Spears only has 5.5 sacks since Wade came to Dallas in 07'. But basically Spears is a perfect fit for Parcells' 3-4 scheme, where you were only responsible for one gap and allowing linebackers to make the plays. In Wade's scheme it's a multiple gap scheme with a lot more stunting and blitzing, allowing the defensive line to make more plays. Spears hasn't really adjusted to Wade's scheme, and may be better suited as a DT in a 4-3 scheme or a DE in a one gap 3-4 scheme.

Again our DEs play a 5 technique or cover the OT in the base defense. The stunting and blitzing is not the base defense. They may line up 5a or 5b in the base but they do not play the gaps. I don't know why this other nonsense is being constantly spewed because that's not our base defense. They are not lined up in the B or C gap in our base defense.

I understand that Spears does a great job in the base defense when his responsibility is to hold the OT, but when he gets an opportunity to rush the passer when a possible stunt is called, he's almost non-effective. He's a one-dimensional, solid player but will never make the Pro Bowl or have a double-digit sack season. The guy has 8 sacks in his entire CAREER.

That's usually because he's on the sidelines. The guy does his job. He stops the run.

OK, I agree. But rushing the passer in not the job of the DEs in the base defense which is much of the time. We use Ratliff, the OLBs and the ILBs to rush the passer in most non-passing downs. This is why I keep repeating that Seymour is not going to lend as much as the money he will cost. He is an upgrade. Not so sure in the run department but definitely in the rush department. But what do you think Bowen and Hatcher are for. If he can be had cheap enough I'm all for it but I doubt he will come as cheap as the other DEs. Not nearly.

I like Bowen a lot, and I think Hatcher gets tendered but may lose his job to a rookie DL (hopefully). I understand what you're saying with the base defense, but what about when we play a team who gets pass happy? The NFL is turning into a passing league, and you can never have enough pass rushers, whether it's from a DL or LB. Maybe Spears just hasn't gotten enough opportunities to rush the passer? But I'm worried about the contract Spears is going to demand. I hope I'm wrong but he seems like the type of player to pack it in after he gets his big contract (see Roy Williams the safety, Ken Hamlin, Marion Barber, etc).

Those are some solid points and there are many things to consider here. For one, Jerry sees us prime for a run right now, so does he try to bring in an impact player in FA? Or does he feel like the pieces are already in place? As much as I would like to have Seymour, I have a hard time believing the Raiduhs let him go after paying a kings ransom to get him on their team.

Another possible option would be to bring in Hampton or Wilfork, let Spears walk and slide the Rat over to the end. I just can't see Wade doing this either.

Then there's the draft. If a big fella with a motor falls to us in the 1st few rounds that might be our best option. Spears is solid against the run and you don't know what you got, till it's gone. I hope he doesn't demand a ridiculous payday, but if he does I will sadly have to say bye bye. Personally I'm hoping we draft somebody..

You're probably right, but going to have a great career in the NFLI think Earl Thomas is and he'll most likely be available at #27. DE's are such a crapshoot in the draft anyway, it's impossible to tell who's going to pan out. Look at Aaron Maybin from the Bills, the guy was drafted #11 I believe, had trouble seeing the field and didn't record a single sack. The only player I would consider trading up out of the three positions is Rolando McClain, but he'll probably be a top ten pick.

I tend to agree with you. I'd like it if we picked Thomas at #27. He's going to be a good (if not great) NFL player and I'd love to see him in the Defensive Backfield for the Cowboys!

personally i say spears. he is younger, cheaper, and fits the scheme better. imo seymour is more of a 4-3 DE and wouldnt make for good 3-4 end. If ppl want to say move him to OLB, we already have ware and spencer. having seymour too would take away from our yong guys reps mainly victor butler, jason williams, and carpenter in certain packages). there has to be a reason the pats traded him, other than stealing a #1. imo its bc he is up there in age and his bests days are behind him.

Did you really just say Seymour more a 4-3 DE and not a good fit for a 3-4 end?

A 6-6/310 OLB?

Mods please, can we do something?

I think Spears is better against the run and with our OLBs and Ratliff being the primary pass rusher threats I prefer the DEs be run stuffers. Familair, good character, and cheaper.

I'll take Spears if his price is reasonable.

this

Spears does a great job of containing the outside while Ratliff collapses the pocket
