Roger Goodell has the authority to overturn Detroit Lions-Dallas Cowboys' Week 17 outcome

Not going to happen bc the PA system in the stadium announced that 70 was eligible to the entire stadium. Detroit knew pre-snap that the refs got it wrong but still ran the play. So, they had an opportunity to remedy the misunderstanding. If that isn’t enough , they had two more shots at it. No way Goodell reverses this and changes the final score.

I mean, it was a sh¡tty way to win the game I can't lie, so it is understandable from the rest of the leagues perspective. Oh well.
With the refs missing the tripping call on Hutchinson and calling it on Hendershot, it's even.

Game should've been pretty much over if the correct call was made....or if no call was made for that matter.

You can’t do it.

Even if the lions get it. Cowboys had 23 seconds, 2 timeouts and a kicker with a booming leg who hasn’t missed a FG yet.

The game wasn’t over even if the lions did get the 2 points.
And you've got the problem of the official saying 70 is eligible but not 68, which affects the defense's ability to know who to cover. Overturning that would say that the officials making a mistake to hurt the Lions is worse than the officials making a mistake to hurt the Cowboys. It creates a disadvantage either way.

To those who are old enough, remember 12 men on the field against the Lions? I think it was 1981 or so. They kicked a last second field goal with an extra man on the field. The league admitted the error, but did not change the outcome. I was at the Silverdome that day. Cowboys fans were livid. Then commissioner Pete Rozelle laughed about it and said "whatever it takes" or something like that. 40+ years later, the league had better take the same stance.

There were two defenders on 68.

It was a stupid mistake by Detroit to continue with the play. It is 100% on them.
Agreed, and this was not a "trick" play. This was a failed effort to manipulate the administrative process of declaring eligibility.

They should look on the bright side. Their trick worked, it certainly fooled the ref.

We were told 70 was eligible, so you have to account for him. The fact that 70 didn't go out and 68 did means that we had to react to that, but it doesn't mean we were set for it. By announcing the wrong number, the ref created an advantage for Detroit.

An OT had to catch the football. With 2 Dallas defenders covering him.

Should there have been 3 defenders?

This entire play is ridiculous.

Kind of reminds me of the Dez play.

In any case, Detroit was clearly robbed. Everyone saw it.

How can he? Let's assume the refs did make a mistake and get the number of the eligible player wrong. They announced it to Dallas and Dallas played the play as if 70 was eligible and 68 was not. To overturn the play would penalize the Cowboys for the refs mistake. Plus, there was time left on the clock after the 2 point conversion. Dallas would be deprived of an opportunity to run back the kick. Or get a long PI call or hit a big play to get them in FG range.

I have a very low opinion of Goodell, but I don't think he would take such a drastic action on this play. It is wishful thinking by Lions fans.

Why would we assume the Ref's got it wrong? My guess is Goodell would defend his Ref's 1st. There is no proof the Ref made a mistake. Players make mistakes. Coaches make mistakes. Ref's make mistake. It is part of the game. Ref's have made mistakes all year long. No way in hell Goodell sets a precedent overturning games after they have been finalized.

It's in the article, he can reschedule and restart the game or continue the game from the point of the questionable outcome.

If a commissioner-led investigation into official Brad Allen’s call reveals it was “extraordinarily unfair or outside the accepted tactics” and has “a major effect on the result of the game,” Roger Goodell can take action that includes “the reversal of a game’s result or the rescheduling of a game, either from the beginning or from the point at which the extraordinary act occurred.”
That's means it would restart from the tripping call so Dallas ball.

Dumb article. They are not running this back, no matter what. That would open up a can of worms that they don't want to. What makes articles like this dumb is that Detroit tried to be slick and use the refs as a part of their deception. Honestly, the NFL needs to fine teams that are trying to circumvent the spirit of the rules. If you are going to run in someone fine, but don't intentional try to mislead the defense. Makes me think of that high school play where a player will look like he is going off the field, but will be standing next to the sideline talking to the coach. When the ball is snapped he takes off running because he is uncovered because everyone thinks he was not in the game. Its bush league at best. The whole point of announcing the player is to give the defense a fair shot at playing defense. To me it is akin to chating.
