blessing in disguise! now the staff knows we need to have a contingency plan for a capable backup for rogers in the event we do lose him during the season.

The problems with Roger's shoulders will be chronic for his whole career. He has had 4 surgeries apparently. I think 2 on each side. My concern remains his ability to gain strength to the point he can handle NFL players and his ability to keep it from being too sore to play.

I have had arthroscopic surgery on my shoulder similar to Rogers. My "Labrum" (Jerry mentions that is where last scope on Rogers was focussed) had a slight tear in it. The "labrum" is sorta like the rotator cuff cartilidge that your arm bone rotates in. It's the outside wall of the ball joint/socket. Tears in there are tough to fix, and actually aren't really fixable. What they do is clean it up just like knee cartilidge so that it doesn't tear further. It stays sore forever particularly when you pound on it by lifting weights and playing football. I did 6 months of physiotherapy because no doctors believe my shoulder was actually injured to that degree. The therapy helped my posture and balanced the muscles to take pressure off the joint, but the pain and weakness remained. I finally demanded the scope and sure enough they found and cleaned up a tear in the "labrum" (rotator cuff).

The main problem is strength. When the shoulder is sore you are very weak on that side and in that arm as pain is referred all over. I get sore lifting heavy weights now, and anything over 225 pound bench press begins to irritate it for a day or two. With 4 surgeries I worry how much Rogers can really push his power and muscle mass gaining training. Bench Press, Shoulder exercises, and biceps are aggravated by the injury to the joint.

Kinda long winded, but thought I'd give my experience with the injury. Mine was very minor, but a huge pain in the arse! He will likely have troubles staying in lineup regulary all his career, and keeping his strength up and consistent will likely be an issue game to game, year to year. These guys are genetic freaks, have the best doctors and trainers in the world, and use a ton of pain killing stuff that will hurt them longterm but keep them able to play shortterm, so who knows, hopefully he can contribute and make a nice career for himself.

thanks for the insight and sharing your experience....I'm sure you are right on. I hope he can at least play a few years and stay in the starting line....talented kid.

Whoa. Wonder if he's camp fodder or will be actually provide competition at FS.
When Derek was drafted, it was actually announced he was drafted to play specials - you know how fans love hearing that. :D - they call it a "wasted pick".

But the Jets excellent specials team coach, Mike Westhoff wanted him..said he was a value in the 5th and that he was one of "the top three special teams defensive backs" in the 03 draft.

To Derek's credit, he came in vowing to learn everything he could about specials. Btw, I think he runs about a 4.5 .

Because the Jets had an oft injured starting FS in Jon McGraw, Pagel provided some coverage security. When Erik Coleman beat out McGraw, that knocked Derek down to third team.

I don't think he is starter material, but you never know. He lacks Keith's
speed and Lynn's experience...can't say he is any specials team "demon" either.

He's a guy tho, that never saw enough game time for you to say for sure he couldn't start.

I doubt it, but you never know.

Last year he went on IR sometime around Nov 1, so he's only a season and a half into his career.

Nice kid, real smart. His teammates liked him in NY.

Am I being super pessimistic? I don't see how the team can depend on him. I had high hopes -- and injuries can happen to anyone -- but his shoulders seem especially finicky.

He basically necessitates an assumption he'll be lost to injury for x number of games at some point in every season, along with a vetran RT to sit behind him for when that time comes. If he makes it through an entire year, the team considers it gravy. At best, it seems he'll have some degree of shoulder issues every season, have surgery every off-season or two to "clean things up", and be done with football (or lifting his kids) by the time he's 30. I can't really remember the last OL I had heard of having shoulders like Jacobs. Seems to have the talent and work ethic to succeed but must have gotten his mother's shoulders when the genetic dice were rolled.

I don't think Rogers is going to be able to hold up. He's had more shoulder surgeries than Jerry Jones has had facelifts. We might have to move Larry Allen over to Right Tackle, and let Stephen Peterman, Ben Noll, Tyson Walter, and who knows who else (maybe Andre Gurode) fight it out for the left guard position.

If Tucker sucks, which I was not conviced of based on last season. Had good games and very bad games, but you expect him to grow from one year to the next. Which by all reports does not seem to be the case (over weight, mentally has not progressed). Yes Vollers has gotten bigger but it is clear he is a backup.

There is absolutely no way Rogers shoulder last sixteen games. He is hurt the first week of training camp.

So where does that leave us ? Allen to tackle? Not going to happen, sounds like one move but it is not, it changes everything. Teams will blitz Bledsoe up the middle, so now to solve one problem you are counting on 2 things to happen. One) Allen can still play tackle, at his age and can not finish a training camp run. Is there anyone who believes he can still handle the 4 or 5 pure speed rushers he will face in a 16 game season? Two) Peterman can handle guard when teams will be sending the blitz up the middle. Not only that but what does it do to the running game.

No, Allen to Tackle is not a option. I believe it was Sarge who said this O depends on the RT. Besides injuries to WR, Line, QB etc. I believe he is correct.

Going into the season, with Rogers at RT, is not much different then going into the season with Hunter at CB and no backups as we did last season.

We have done a lot of good things this off season, but to a large extent, no RT could be the difference between 8-8 and 11-5.

We will need to bring in a stop gap RT like Verba.

If we don't we are playing Russian Roliet with the season.

I don't know as we can trust his shoulder for a 16 games season. At this point is it shoulder(s)?

It would make sense to put Rogers on the second squad and get someone else to start so we don't have an "x factor" on our line. We need to get these guys working as a unit and having someone who is injury-riddled playing there is asking for trouble.

Something has got to be done now while there's still time.

Parcells wants Vollers to be his Swingman backing up both Tackle spots witch is why he wants Rogers or Petitti to win the job. Maybe Rogers just needs a little break during two a days. his shoulder must have taken a beating the last 11 days or so. I know how my shoulders feel after plowing the fields!. :trophy: :iggles: :suxiggle: :disseags:

What happens when you have to play Sunday and then Thanksgiving, in the middle of a 16 game season? Listen I want to believe, but a guy who was hurt in College, missed his whole first year of the pros and is now is hurt 1st week of camp.

I don't want ot go out on a limb, but this is not a guy that well play 5 to 8 games max this year. That is not a starter.

Hopefully it's just some minor post-op complication involving scar tissue or something similar and he'll settle down and keep heading where he's been going.
