Romo’s trade value may not be worth as much as you think

Yup. Kirk Cousins is getting paid 19.5 Million this season.
Pains me to say it but he's earned it. I laughed heavily when the skins tagged him, even knowing why they had to. But man, the guy is proving his worth

I don't doubt that, but IMO its an elite salary for a QB that is good but not great.

Who care what teams value Romo at. He's under contract as a Cowboy and Jerry isn't giving him away. Dak needs a backup, and if Romo is that next year, then more the merrier. Fans are so obsessed with his salary. We always find ways to manage the cap. Next year will be no different if Romo stays.

Blimey!

So financially naive on so many levels. Almost like investing in American soccer in ... Cleveland and getting rid of the Madrid or Manchester clubs. (All right, ruffians, I am working on a better analogy!)

Great. Keep a very expensive distraction on the bench next year. Sigh.

Who knows, Romo could provide leadership in the playoffs (wink).
If it doesn't work out after 2017, trade the soon-to-be 38-year-old for a "good" (wink) deal.

Well consider my position, blokes. I am off for darts and Guinness and chips (and toad in the hole to get DallasDave off my back).

they are not going to trade Tony Romo. Unless he tells them he wants out and points out a specific team he wants to go to they are not going to do that. They have never traded legendary players. They will release them and let them go on their way.

I will say it right now without any question there is a zero percent chance he is traded.

They'd be stupid to pass on the chance to trade him.

Cut him so Kellen Moore can be the backup. Get real.

So all these years Sir Jerry paid millions to Romo, backed up by stellar backups?
Why new demands on Sir Jerry and Dak that Romo did not have to live up to?
Seems like we have new standards for this young QB...

Trade or release, the Cowboys would reap the same benefit cap wise (I've heard the same $5 mil figure bandied about).

What would make it better for the Cowboys as @bkight13 has pointed out is getting Romo to take even less in exchange for a guaranteed amount. There is no more guaranteed money left on Romo's contract as it now reads.

Then the Cowboys would get some kind of trade-compensation for him and even more savings on the salary cap.

If Romo isn't on the roster the dead money is going to be the same with or without any sort of renegotiation.

I really doubt Jerry gives Romo away. He would be an expensive backup, but the salary for Romo and Dak is the same regardless of who starts.

We aren't going to eat all that dead money and then give Romo away, and then have to pay for a backup QB. I just don't see that scenario playing out. It wouldn't be the first time I am wrong, but I just don't see us giving Romo away for peanuts.
yeah they will keep him over not getting nothing, and I doubt they would let a nfc east team have him, and maybe not certain nfc teams.

I wonder where tony would want to go?
is it denver?

There is no telling how this will play out.

I do like having tony as a bkup, big difference from that to kellen or sanchez.

The other thing is what if dak is a one year wonder ?? better to keep tony until we know for sure.

I have no doubt about Romo bringing in a 3rd round pick, especially in this QB starved league, but a first rounder? I'm not believing there's any chance of that. I'd trade him today for a 2nd.
lol and then we get what?? another escobar, or some other guy who winds up not doing much?

I dont get why people are in such a hurry to trade or cut tony, it is better to keep him here for another year.
If cowboys want to keep him, he is under contract, so has to stay.
I say we keep him thru 2017.

I'm willing to bet Tony has zero interest in staying here as Dak's backup for 2017. He loves Dallas, but he has only a little football left, and he won't want to be a backup again. No way he returns, imo, unless he is guaranteed a chance to at least compete for the starting job....and that ain't happening.

You are right that Tony won't want to stay if he doesn't get an opportunity to compete for the position. Jerry is not going to trade Romo to Cleveland or some other loser team you can bet. My guess is that they
make Tony a June 1st cut and split his cap money over two years just like DWare. Jerry wants Tony to have a chance to get his ring. Tony would rather retire than go to a team that has no hope and then
all his cap money would hit next year. There are lots of variations that can happen next spring.

As Dak Prescott has solidified his hold on the starting quarterback role with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s left Tony Romo’s future up in the air. While Jerry Jones has made it clear that he would like to keep Romo in Dallas, Romo still wants to play, and he could be in the market for a new team this offseason. Romo should be a hot commodity for quarterback-needy teams, but his value may be lower than expected.

General managers around the league project that the Cowboys could get “some sort of mid to late-round conditional pick” for Romo, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortenson.

Quarterback market watch
As holiday shoppers make out their shopping lists, NFL teams already have theirs waiting, especially at the eclectic quarterback position, where teams have any number of ways in which they can spend their money.

The list of quarterbacks who could or will be available in the coming offseason is of a much higher profile than in the past, but each quarterback comes with his own questions. Still, the following is a list of QBs that teams such as the Bears, Jets, 49ers and others will be sifting through:

i

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Though Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has no plans to move on from Romo, many people around the league believe Dallas will end up doing so.

DAL gets at least a 1st for Romo guaranteed

They don't get significant cap relief until after June 1st so there is no hurry or pressure to do anything

None of his base salary of 14m is guaranteed so they have all the leverage
