Romo has yet to embrace concept of protecting the ball

As Tony Romo described his interception just before halftime of the Baltimore debacle Saturday night, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback's words should make rooters cringe. "Once I made him miss, I knew he was one-on-one," Romo said of Terrell Owens. "Ed Reed did a good job of following me once I rolled that way. It was the end of the half. I believe it was third down. You treat it kind of like a punt. I was hoping to give him [Owens] a chance to make a play. I just kind of put it out there."
It spoke to Romo's immaturity as a player. His cavalier response indicates that after 38 starts, he still doesn't understand the importance of protecting the ball, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Baltimore safety Ed Reed returned Romo's interception 29 yards to the Ravens' 49 with 27 seconds left in the first half. Three plays later, Matt Stover kicked a 37-field goal on the final play of the half to give the Ravens a 9-7 lead in a game everyone knew points would be at a premium.

Romo tries to give his receivers chances to make a play quite a few times. He did it twice last sunday, with both Williams and Owens.

The trouble is, neither one seems at all eager to go up for the ball, or make any sort of an effort to make a play when Tony gives them that chance.

Very dumb comment.....he needs to be careful with his words and more careful with the ball.

I like his response. He does not care about stats--I hate guys that sit on it before the half. Throw it deep and at least try to score. They did not get the ball in scoring position--give the 3 points to the defense.

Plus it was 2nd down and like 3 which makes it that much more irritating.

Wasn't the reason Big Bill benched Drew Bledsoe because he did not protect the football................

This isn't about stats, this is about winning football games, and the team does better when we don't trun the ball over. Romo's excuse IS bad.

Those three points were the difference in the game. You get it right? The Big Tuna understood the field position battle. When you are in a defensive struggle, protect the ball at all costs. We could have punted and maybe put them back behind their own 20. Then they would have had to march their inept offense down the field to get those points. Big difference.

The problem there is it created a potential 6-point swing.

We were in good position to get a FGA. Instead, Reed picks off the pass and sets up a Ravens FG.

Keep in mind that with about 1:30 to go, we are down by two points. If the six-point swing had carried through, it is a four-point lead for us. I do know that the game is unlikely to have played out identically under these circumstances but when games are close, you have to make the most of your opportunities and Romo shouldn't have been flinging around the ball willy-nilly when we are close to FG range in a close, defensive battle.

If that is sarcasm then that's pretty funny.

a miami fan at a bar where I watched the game asked me about this very thing. He was wondering on both those plays why our WRs did not even try to get them, just let them fly away.

and yes, i hate it when QBs sit on a ball at the end of first halfs...

Sorry but those weren't on the WR's. Both those passes were just plain bad passes and horrible decisions.

Very depressing point of view by Romo... When that happened I was floored. Even before he tossed it I knew we were going to go in down at the half... Just like a punt? ooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkk... Sure our punt team consists of 5 huge immobile offensive linemen.... :(
