That analysis is nice but the reality is Prescott will never more anything more than a backup QB. Going further, I wouldn't use his drafting as an excuse to pass up on a higher ceiling guy in the next draft or two if the opportunity presents itself. Like for example, if next year, we are picking in the 20s and that draft turns into a strong QB draft with a bunch of underclassmen having great college seasons and declaring, I wouldn't pass on a QB that slides to use because we have Prescott.

There is no way to know that! I do think if we get an opportunity next year to pick up a strong QB in the draft we should do it as well. Competition is good. But Prescott could end up being a multiple SB QB or a bust. Nobody knows right now. But what this data says is that he has a chance to be great which is way better than we have had for a long time.

these guys started last year in the NFL

Tony Romo (undrafted)
Tom Brady (round 6)
Ryan Fitzpatrick ( round7)
Russell Wilson (round 3)
Zach Mettenberger (round 6)
Kirk Cousins ( round 4)
Brian Hoyer (undrafted)
Tyrod Taylor (round6)

Sweet. Now list for me all the 3rd through UDFA QBs that didn't make it and you'll see that the 7 guys you listed are such a small percentage and that the reality is that hit rate on guys fitting that criteria is miniscule. That's the point. The reality is that history shows that it's gonna be pretty unlikely (yes, not impossible) that Prescott amounts to much more than just a backup at best.

And given that, the Cowboys wouldn't be wrong in taking another QB, higher in the draft, if the opportunity presents itself in the next couple of drafts.

I hope to hell Prescott is the next Russell Wilson. Shoot, I hope he's better than Russell Wilson. But I also am not blind to the fact that the odds of that happening are really, really low.

Dak is a lower tier project...that's a fact. Even the Cowboys preferred giving up their #34 and 4th for Lynch.
Cowboys had one QB they wanted in the bottom of round 1. They had all QB's from A to Z tiered by the round they'd be happy with them.
Dak ended up being the guy in a round and at a selection where they didn't see an immediate contributor or superior athlete available.

That said, as Roger the Dodger said, mental toughness and leadership are perhaps the most important traits to being a long term success at QB. Look at Romo, Brees, Flutie, Brady, and others....not one of them had the strongest arm, the greatest physical attributes of great QBs on paper, but they were winners in college, they continually improved in college, and they had the mental toughness and confidence and leadership to overcome obstacles along the way, including their own mistakes.

I think Dak is in the perfect situation for him or any QB, and he has the mental toughness, self-confidence, and leadership in abundance. Now someone just needs to help him take what are also above average skills that improved every year (pretty impressive numbers last year) and help him refine them for the NFL.

And in reality, it's about the development of QB's by the coaching staff and in reality the organization that is more important than anything. Guys like Tim Couch failed because they didn't have the organization that could help develop them. Guys like Donovan McNabb succeed because they had a coach and organization that knew how to develop QB's.

Phil Simms looked like a bust until Parcells became the HC. Hostetler was playing special teams so he could have a job and Parcells turned him into a viable QB. Bledsoe was far better under Parcells than he was under Carroll and Belichick. Testaverde was long considered an NFL bust and then was All-World under Parcells with the Jets. Hell, Parcells got respectable seasons out of Ray Lucas and Quincy Carter and Romo was a UDFA.

YR

I agree, and we see lots of fans saying this staff can't develop a QB, but in reality, who developed Romo?

I'm not positive because I'm old and time starts blurring, but weren't Wilson and Garrett the QB coach and coordinator when he was developed?
I know Parcells was the head coach, but do fans actually think Parcells was a QB developer? Sure, he knew how to be hard on guys and share wisdom and keep them humble, and he had his little list (most of which Romo violated with his early career turnovers), but Parcells wasn't the guy spending hours each week in the film room or on the practice field developing the 3rd string QB on the practice squad.

I think this staff knows how to do it, but some of the guys we've had here since Romo became the starter just haven't had the physical skills or the mental skills or the toughness and confidence....IMO.

Glad you liked it ........ now when Romo gets hurt and we have the number one or two pick in the draft ....... I would still draft a QB.

I m just saying that it is not out of the realm of possibility that Prescott becomes a good QB

I thought it was a waste of a 4th rounder myself ........ but I am not a fan of projects at the QB or RB positions.

FWIW, there was a typo in my post. That first sentence is missing two words............... It should have read, ".... reality is Prescott will likely never be more than a backup................"

Does he have a chance to be more than that? Of course. But the odds are largely stacked against him or any 4th round QB. Given that, I am not opposed to Dallas going QB again in one of the next two drafts.

Good thing you cleared that up...I was getting ready to blast you! :)

I agree with the premise of the OP... I do think the bust factor on Wentz and Lynch is sky-high...

Prescott... not so much.

Mike David Lee & Sean Payton with an assist from Bill Parcells developed Romo.

Nobody knows anything about what he will become at this point. He has just as much chance to become a good starting QB as he does to be a total bust. Here is what we do know. He is on an upward trajectory as he improved greatly in the past year, everyone agrees he has the leadership and intangibles you look for in a QB, he is very athletic for a QB, he has good size for the position, he has some warts and flaws that need to be worked on, and he didn't cost very much draft capital to acquire. I just don't see how anyone can feel the need to badmouth him and totally write him off at this point. Let's see him play and hopefully enjoy watching him improve.

Prescott is in a great situation, and in the event that Romo got hurt and we had to put him in, you simply run an offense along the lines of what Russell Wilson did his first year or two. Simple reads, a lot of rollouts, elements of the spread offense. He has a better chance IMO than a guy like Moore who is purely a pocket passer with less than required tools such as height and/or arm strength.

I like the assumption that Wentz will be a bust, waaaaaaaay more than Prescott having a sliver of hope of being good.

I do agree that just because we drafted Dak this season, QB should not be removed from future draft boards, especially in the next few years.

He may turn out to be a solid or even great player, and I have a feeling the team will know relatively quickly, but QB is THE position on a team, and IMO, we should turn over every rock to find the next great one.

If we draft another QB in the next 2-3 years (Pat Mahomes, please*), and Dak turns out to be a stud, let them battle it out to be the franchise and move the other for premium picks guy (e.g. Steve Walsh).

I pray the F.O. doesn't sit back and say, well we drafted Dak, so we're done, like they did McGee.

IMO, what the Cowboys do at QB next year depends more on Romo than anyone else
If Romo can stay healthy the entire season and takes us to the playoffs then we will stick with Prescott
If Romo misses games again, we will pick a QB high

I highly doubt they will, and if they do it's because they are encouraged by him which is a good thing. Jerry seems to understand he needs to find Romo's
Replacement asap.

No team would ever do that. McGee? After they drafted McGee Romo was in his prime, there was no reason to draft a qb high.

Staubach can say and feel whatever he likes. And you can believe him.

But the facts are HISTORY shows that the odds of a 4th round QB amounting to anything more than a backup QB in this league are largely against Prescott. That's my point.
