No, I don't pay attention. I've only watched every draft the Cowboys have had for the last 20 years probably (and every other pick for two straight days barring the need to either get a beer or get rid of one). For every review of our pick of Carp at 18 that says "brilliant!" or even "appropriate" I could find 10 that say "Well, I guess they needed a LB, but 18th overall is too high for Carpenter". I recall pretty clearly that several of the commentators on draft day said it was a reach - plain and simple. They said he was "heady" and "tough" and "a reliable tackler", but they all seemed to agree that it was higher than he should have gone.

But as he clearly has been the highlight of our defense the last two years, you must be right and I must be wrong.

Oh, wait...

No. You weren't paying attention.

Based on our needs at the time, picking a guy to play OLB opposite Ware made sense. For the defense we were playing, Carpenter was a guy who could play coverage and free up Ware.

What we did not need was another CB.

Two years later, and alot has changed. But the pick absolutely made sense then, no matter how it looks now with the benefit of hindsight.

You should pay closer attention.

Source: Pacman talks between Cowboys, Titans stall

ESPN.com news services

Pacman Jones wants to go to Dallas, and the Cowboys apparently want him. How much they'll give up to get him is a different story.

A source close to the negotiations told ESPN's Ed Werder on Sunday night that trade talks between the Cowboys and Titans have stalled over the issue of compensation.
The Titans are seeking a fourth-round pick in this month's NFL draft and another selection next year, according to the source. The Cowboys are so far unwilling to provide either, believing they are the only team pursuing Jones, who remains suspended for violations of the personal-conduct policy.
The Titans have been steadfast in their position, apparently convinced that Jones' trade value will not worsen.
Jones said last week in a radio interview with Cowboys Hall of Famer Michael Irvin that he wants to resume his career in Dallas. He will apply to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for reinstatment in the next two weeks.

Pacman's agent denies report of Dallas trade

Pacman Jones plans to apply for reinstatement to the NFL after April 10, his agent said.

The agent representing suspended Tennessee Titans defensive back Adam "Pacman" Jones denied an Internet report that said his client had been traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a fifth-round pick.
A report on Rototimes.com said Jones has been dealt, but Manny Arora said he has been told nothing of the kind.
"You would think the Titans would tell me they had traded him if they had," Arora said.
The NFL owners are meeting in West Palm Beach, Fla., and sources said that management from both the Titans and the Cowboys have met to discuss a trade for the suspended defensive back.
"Right now I'm more concerned about the suspension; there are a lot of teams interested. Not just the Cowboys," Arora said.
Arora said he plans to have Jones apply for reinstatement to the NFL shortly after April 10. That is the one-year mark of the league's new behavior program.
The NFL has given no indication whether it will reinstate Jones, other than to say it will make a decision before the start of training camps.

Whats funny is that people like you in SD were calling Cromartie a bust up until he broke out halfway through last season. We needed LBers and if you didn't understand that then you obviously would not understand it now.

You also apparently do not closely pay attention to what is going on with the players on the roster. Carp was a OLB in 2006, in 2007 he was moved to ILB. They are not the same position.

He played wll in 2006 which you refuse to acknowledge much less address in your effort to label his a bust. that player "who is one concussion away from a retirement community" also happens to be an all pro and perennial probowler who was in a car accident. He is not Dan Morgan in terms of concussions. Also there is no telling what will transpire next season in terms of who is playing where.

You could just as easily label Ayodele a bust.

You are trying to put words in my mouth that I never said. This isn't about Ayodele, Dan Morgan, or Cromartie for that matter. And I don't care whether Carp was ILB, OLB, or FBI.

He has not played to his draft position n any way, shape, or form. The reason doesn't matter. It is what it is. You call that "coach's mistake" or "tiime to emerge". I call it being a BUST.

We'll have to agree to disagree I suppose. I'm not a hater, by the way. I'm a loyal Cowboy fan who appreciates other things he may bring to the team. I'm just saying he hasn't played to where he was drafted. That's all.

I stand by my original comments.

I did not say we didn't need a LB, did I? I said "the pick" didn't make sense, and "the pick" was Carpenter.

You should work on your reading comprehension.

My bad. I guess I just assumed you were suggesting we should have drafted a corner or something.

And don't forget who we left to the Chargers at 19.

That's right...Antonio Cromartie.

It was a pick that made no sense THEN and makes no sense NOW.

The pick made perfect sense at the time. We needed a LB to do all the things Carpenter did for Ohio State, and was supposed to do for us. Carpenter just hasn't worked out yet.

What you said perfectly illustrates the point of what you get when you draft for need in the first round. Carpenter was drafted at that spot solely on need and as our picks have proven many times, that's a recipe for failure.

It reminds me of that old Midas muffler commercial where the greasy mechanic smiles and tells the man, "We'll make it fit!"

Could they have possibly found a worse picture of Irvin?:laugh2:
So now we have three seperate articles/blogs. 1 from DMN, 1 from rotoworld, and 1 from ESPN and two of them are saying a deal has not happened. Now we need to wait for the DC.com to state what they have heard.

That's not correct. Carpenter had the talent for a first round pick. The only real decision that year was whether we take him or Lawson. Neither one has been a gem in the NFL. We had a need, and those two very talented college players fit that need. It just hasn't translated to the NFL.

If....this report about the trade already taking place is true, I think we would have heard about it elsewhere by now. I'm going to take this rumor with a grain of salt until it's confirmed elsewhere by other source(s).

Not only is it funny that they want a 4th rounder this year, but they want another pick next year as well?

For a team that claims to have cut ties with the guy and are ready to move on, they sure are trying to make out the winners on this jam they got themselves into.

If I have a dog that bites me every time I try to pet him, and someone offers me a couple of bucks and a puppy for him, do I take it or do I demand 50% of what I paid for him and two puppies?

I suppose this is their way of somehow trying to punish us for the fact that Pacman has already made it clear what team he wants to play for, and it wasn't them.

You were using those as your reasons that he is a bust and you were proven wrong so now you resort to this.

if you cannot stand by what you say then there is no point talking to you.

The draft is over a two day period in April, at the end of the month, and yes after those two days you'll know who've you've drafted but you won't know whose made the team until late August.
