Roy Williams 31

Ah, the nostalgia of his rookie season

First, he was an absolute monster and even a ball hawk. Second, a player would be kicked out of the league by week 3 if he played like that now, he was a human concussion machine.

as amazing as that highlight reel was, at least half of the video can be used on a how not to tackle tutorial

Roy just didn't care about playing.

Why can't people realize this? Darren Woodson retiring surely didn't help and the change in rules played a smaller part, but blaming religion or his ex-fiancee is a cop out

Prior to the rule changes he was playing good ball. That is my take others may feel different that is fine.

This. They took all the fun out of the game for him! I can still remember when he hoarse collared TO and broke whatever! It was a thing of beauty!

I still say he might be the top defensive player I have ever witnessed in college, ever. With Zach Thomas right there with him!

Just watched him get destroyed on a Bengals version of Hard Knocks in the Oklahoma drill. This is a drill where two players pretty much run full speed into each other and see who wins.

To my point, what ever happened to this guy? Never in my life, in any sport, have I ever witnessed someone fall so low from being so high. I remember watching him and thinking he has the makings to be one of the best safeties in Cowboys history. It's not even like he only got exposed in coverage, he also became soft with his tackling. The Roy Williams rule was only when he was chasing, has nothing to do with head up contact. I know he supposedly was "reborn" with the church but it has to be something deeper then that. Damn Roy

You seen tiger woods lately

This happened.

And I thought it was that he became religious and adopted the Christian way of life?

You know..non-violence and all.

But that picture above is a Horse Of Another Color.

Haha..

1. He got fat
2. He got soft and apparently got really religious..

Lost that edge and never got it back.

He quit trying. Simple as that. A stronger work ethic and discipline and he would have been the same guy he was for his first couple of years. He relied on ability, got fat, and became a liability.

His decline is due to back and knee surgeries plus a scandal that rocked his world damaging his image. To stay on top in golf as many years as he did was pretty amazing. It's not like he was on top for a few years and just fell completly off. He dominated the sport for almost 15 years.

I still remember back then how loyal everyone still was several years later, when his decline started roughly in 2005-6, when people still thought he was better than Dawkins or Reed.

He was a finger-pointing excuse maker. He simply did not have the desire to be the best.

lol. Religious folks hate football.

That is not what anyone said. He found religion, when people find religion their sometimes their priority changes, their mindset changes, their attitude changes especially if that person does not like something about themselves. Roy Williams played with a chip on his shoulder and somewhere along the lines that chip fell off, I could have been one thing or a culmination of a lot of things. Whatever they were I hope he is happy because he is probably by far one of my top 10 Cowboys even though his time was short lived.

I think he was being sarcastic.

I get nostalgic for the yearly mid-June article about how Roy was going to rebound from a poor season. Seems like that was a tradition for about 5 years

That's going a little overboard Williams was a very good player for several years but never reached an elite level. His fall was sudden but not nearly as dramatic or sudden as the fall of Shaun Alexander. Alexander rushed for a league high 1880 yards in 2005 and was named the league MVP. He was coming off a 1696 yard season in 04 and a 1435 yard season in 03. He was hands down the best back in football and completely fell of the cliff starting in 06 where he rushed for only 896 yards and his rushing average dropped from 5.1 in 05 to 3.6. In 07 he rushed for only 716 yards and averaged 3.5 per carry. He was so bad the Seahawks released him after the 07 season and the one season he spent in Washington he only rushed for 24 yards averaging 2.2 a carry. His fall from grace was like no other NFL player I can remember.
