Roy Williams not as bad after all

Over the past two weeks, I have watched many strong safeties that many considered to be far better than Roy Williams get exploited. Last week, it was Polomalu getting owned by the Jets and last night, it was Harrison getting owned by LJ Smith. Smith caught many critical passes against Harrison last night and Harrison also blew coverage on one of the TD’s to Brown. This led me to realize that you won’t find very many strong safeties in the NFL that can really cover decent tight ends one on one. I am not saying it can’t be done, but it is an extreme rarity. The Pats just have been doing a better job of keeping Harrison from getting exploited than the Cowboys had for Williams. That doesn’t mean he sucks though. So take that into consideration next time Roy gets beat by a TE or WR in coverage…It happens to the best of them.

Roy has played pretty well that last few weeks. There have been some mistakes, but nobody always plays a perfect game. I'm happy with the way the Cowboys have played him and how he has played.

impossible...RW is responsible for everything bad, including global warming and these new antibiotic-resistant super bugs

No, he's actually a really good player. People also fail to realize how meaningful he is to our rushing defense.

Well, I'd have to assume that it has a lot to do with him not being put in on obvious passing downs. He can't make a mistake from the sideline.

All DBs get burned and gives up TDs. Roy isn't as good as some think and he isn't as bad as some believes.

David, I admit I overreacted but...

I know you are being sarcastic but you seem to go overboard when somebody offers any type of criticism of Roy Williams, although this thread is not attempting to criticize him.

I know the Roy Bashers (along with the Apologist) can annoying, but most people feel Roy is a very good player but have concerns about one or two aspects of his game.

I think there are very few people that try to blame him for everything bad that happens, they just point out a few flaws in his game.

My take anyway

people go way overboard with their criticism of him....he's a good player with a flaw or two...personally I think he is playing hurt, but we probably wont know until after the season (if ever)

Exactly. But people can’t understand that, they have to throw you into one group or the other. Say whatever you want about ANY player on the team...but don’t talk about Roy! It’s crazy and freaky how this place is about this guy.

IMO Pass defense is all about pressure to the QB. The secondary is there to delay the receivers and maybe jump a route every once and awhile, but the heart of defending the pass is the front seven's ability to get to the QB. You give any NFL caliber QB time in the pocket to complete his throws, and he'll find a way to get the ball to his receivers...

I bet that on a neutral field, if Sam Hurd and Rex Grossman played together with the Pat's O-line, that they could pass all over the top three CB's in the league, if the rest of their defense was mediocre and they could not generate pass rush.

What's worse is that because of today's events he is likely to make yet another Pro Bowl appearance...something he clearly doesn't deserve.

I was hoping a non-pro bowl year would help him become a better player.

He was going to make it anyway, based on the fact that ST plays a different position.

I've said this before ... that HAS NOT HAPPENED. Roy has been in the game on every obvious passing down.

Which SS deserve to go in instead of Roy?

You are aware that Sean Taylor is a free safety and Roy is a strong safety. Players from each position are going to the Pro Bowl, The Sean Taylor situation has no effect on the strong safety position.
