RT's We Could Realistically Acquire

The ultimate question is if that so-called significant slide performance is still better than the existing options starting at tackle for the Cowboys.

Thats a resounding yes imho.
Agreed, but I'm not sure that he is (assuming Guyton has solidified his game at all) and he's never played RT in the NFL.

This is why Ferguson will continue to be forced to help Steele, vs getting up the seam.

He doesn’t.

Basically, Ferg is in the slot or off the line 60% of his snaps. On almost every down where the tight end hip to hip with the tackle, it’s the left side. Even then, it’s just a chip.

Steele’s side gets Javontae when a chip or assist is needed. When there’s two tight ends, BSF lines up on the RT’s hip.

Thats how the offense is designed.

He got 102 targets last year. That doesn’t happen when a guy is reduced to blocking.

Can’t have steak at every position.
Yes that's true but if it's only 70% lean hamburger meat I would take tough Chuck steak over that I I'm thinking they just need an emergency veteran that could fill in if either of our tackles poop their pants so to speak You need a swing tackle with experience You can't have struggles there and then bring in a rookie or another player that's also a suspect so maybe not trade for someone you know that's going to be expensive and use a lot of resources but you do need to find that veteran like we had with Peters but maybe a better fit for swing tackle and then if you replace either Guyton or steal in a game they're still around in case there's an injury there the swing guys.. Think we're more worried about the depth and having a guy just in case you can't have another Chaz Green moment and just leave it there I mean that was the worst moment I've ever seen a coach just let a guy stay in and have 6 sacks against them and then finally bring in someone else and that dude gives up an immediate sack we don't need another game like that so you gotta have somebody waiting that you know can at least get control back at the position if it's spinning...

If there's an injury you need a guy a veteran swing tackle that can do like Hoffman or Bass and actually play two or three games as a starter if necessary..

Yeah, putting my professional oline scouting certification aside, lol, Guyton's 3rd year improvement hype PR campaign is as empty calories a thing as his 2nd year improvement claims were.

Id bet he either gets fired for performance or has another injury before the regular season ends.

But I'll gladly take my crow medium well.

The positional importance of left tackle(or both tackles on this team) over rides both the salary cap contract and player acquisition risk in this case for me.

While I can respect yours and others offensive tackle opinions, if it doesn't include to acquire Decker or someone near Decker's level starting ability to start at tackle then I would strongly disagree.

To me, Guyton and Steele are scrubs as passblockers and won't hold up this full season and will be replaced based on performance or injury or both before the regular season ends.

That's me.
Mostly agree - I'm just going to disagree with the bolded. Should be replaced, yes. Will? How? We just don't have the guys to do it. Most likely we will regret going into the season with those two and let's be honest, nothing behind them. Sure we could move Tyler73 and play Bass, but if they wanted to move him they would have. I am happy with a lot of the moves this team made this offseason, but beyond perplexed with OT right now. We MUST bring in a vet at some point. How this team watched those two play the last 2 years in a row and still went through another offseason thinking we are good enough at OT and don't need to bring in a real safety net or even starter is more than a little maddening

I don't really agree that Decker would be that expensive (though maybe his number is why he's unsigned), but it's a good point.

I think it'd be more likely that they give him a two-year deal with a void year or something like that.
I think people are not taking into account that what he wanted when he couldn't come to an agreement on a contract with Detroit may not be in the same ball park as what he will settle for now. Also, if he walks in as a starting OT that's a pretty valuable asset for a team. Now, is he healthy and does the team even think he is good enough to play? I don't know the answer to that, but what are the odds he is worse than BOTH Steele and Guyton. I mean even if one plays better this year do we really think there is much of a chance that both do? And again, the cap is not an issue unless he is looking for well over $10M per. Maybe he is, I don't know

There are a couple of vets who might be able to give you some stability but you're really not going to find anything better than we have as a UFA at this point. More realistically, it could be around trade deadline for a pending free agent.

Austin Jackson - Miami
Jawaan Taylor - Atlanta
Ike Ekwonu/Rasheed Walker - Carolina
Ryan Vandermark - Min

Just some guys on bad teams who are pending free agents and could probably give you some good snaps.
Might be worth trading for one — maybe send them Liufau

Those guys are all either starting tackles or their team’s primary swing tackle.

Liufau has no trade value at all.

He’s will likely be unemployed at 6:01 pm on August 30th.

Would I like to have new all pro Tackles? Absolutely.

But that said, the offense was one of the best in the league with these 2 last years. They seemed to muddle through.

Good coaching, playcalling and qb play can hide average rt play. I saw it personally with Doug Free. He plays on Dak strong side so he can see what’s happening or it happening there and hopefully adjust accordingly and quickly.

People still have nightmares about Chaz Green but I’ve read and heard multiple nfl people including Nate Newton and Tony Casilas say as bad of a game as he had, he was left out to sink by a bad coach. They said that was happening all game and Garrett or none of the coaches never made any adjustment or suggestions to change what was happening. They just sat and watched the same result happened over and over again. Newton personally said that was the saddest day he ever witness because it felt like Green was let down and being punished and he never wants to see nothin like that happened to another player. The falcons weren’t even hiding what they were doing.

I don't know much about the availability of RT's around the league. I've long thought that this season's success largely hinges on the OT play, and it sounds like Steele is going to be a huge liability based on the reporting thus far. What are some options around the league to upgrade the position and what would it realistically cost?
No chance Steele sits given what we are paying him.

This is another in a long line of really dumb decisions by Jerry.
