Rumor: Leary to Saints?

I'm expecting him to net us a 6th, probably. What do you think we get in trade?

We can definitely weather the loss of an OG without Leary on the roster, but he's legitimately a guy who steps into this great OL and you don't lose anything. That's worth more than a normal backup in my book. Especially at this point in the offseason where you still have all of camp and all of preseason to weather.

a 6th two years from now is like a 7th this upcoming offseason. And people scoff at his 2.53M but that's a starter's cap hold now or into the future. I also think people are just suggesting Leary can be a LG or RG willy nilly. I think he is a LG only who lacks the requisite movement skills to pull from the RG spot.

So do I want to keep a LG only player who costs $2.53M and who I may get a compensatory pick 2 years from now assuming I do nothing in free agency? Pass.

Give me a sure pick and the money savings and i'll look to find a guard prospect I can develop and who can be active on gamedays due to position flex.

CowboysZone - where 5th rounders are bad value until the Cowboys are drafting guys in the 5th round.

Yup.

Ryan Russell
Devin Street
Joseph Randle
Danny Coale
Josh Thomas
DeAngelo Smith, Michael Hamlin, David Beuhler
Orlando Scandrick
Pat Watkins
Sean Ryan

One, possibly two of the past twelve. Crazy

I see what you mean, but what I was trying to say is --

Hearing that we could garner a 5th rounder for an UDFA in a trade involving Ronald Leary, to me, is a net win.

But apparently according to many it would be a bad trade.

Until next May, when we're picking in the 5th round. Then all of a sudden 5th round picks matter so much. lol.

Hey, we'd all like an extra 5th on draft day.

But "Bad value" is a relative thing...which I'm sure you know.

And a player has been in the league a couple of years, where he was originally drafted has zero relevancy.
Once a player makes a name for himself, his value is based on how good he is and not that other stuff.

Seattle would not take a 2nd rounder for Russell Wilson, for example.
A 4th for Cam Chancellor? uh , no.
Kurt Warner was an UDFA, but we all know SL would not take a high pick for him.
etc

Everyone, can we stop talking about a fifth round pick? THE SAINTS DON'T HAVE A 2017 FIFTH ROUND PICK. The pick would probably be either a 4th or 6th rounder.

He is an UDFA so we get no picks if he decides to retire from football. If he decides to sit out the season, he won't cost us anything since
he is basically a paycheck player. If he doesn't show up, he gets no money. I'm not sure of the rules but, if he sits out this whole year, he
gets no service credit and may be restricted to Dallas next year as well. My guess, he shows up at the start of the season to get his money
and service credit for the year so that he can hit FA next year.

My point was he is only valuable to Dallas as a back up. He will not garner a pick in the first three rounds because he is not head and shoulders above many that are street free agents now and maybe slightly better than a vet that gets released by end of pre-season. Everyone expects some team to give up a premium pick for a guy that is only going to be around 1 year.

Don't hold your breath. We got just a 4th for the deal Parnell signed.

I believe it would depend on how much Leary receives in free agency, him starting and playing time. I'm not sure what other guards will be available in free agency next year so he could end up being fairly coveted. However, since he is a guard and not a tackle, it would surprise me if he receives as much as Parnell did.

OG are making more lately. Still not tackle money but still 75% or more of what they make. Leary will get paid. I am trying to think of better guards to hit the market in recent years and he is comparable to Levitre who got paid over $7m AAV a few years ago.

I'm in favor of trading Ronald Leary and a 7th round pick (we have two in 2017 anyway) to the Saints in exchange for QB Luke McCown and the Saints' 5th round pick.

The Saints have Garrett Grayson to groom behind Brees; the Cowboys need a QB that can backup Romo right away and give Dak Prescott more time.

I agree with you. He is not a "pro bowl" guard and guards are not one of the money 5 positions. Dallas would be lucky to get a 5th for him even right before the
season starts. He will get some offers next year in FA but, probably not for big money since most of the teams know well about his knee concerns.

He played in 2014 although he hurt his groin midseason and took time to recover. Put in the Texans game and watch him block JJ Watt at his peak.

2015 he got Wally Pipp'd by a blue chip prospect.

Go look at the FA lists of OL the last few years. They are filled with marginal players and dinosaurs. He is young and talented which is unusual.

Parnell got a large deal from a 5 game stretch and years of bad tape.

I would love to get PJ Williams. Kid is tailor made for a Tampa 2 defense. Doubt they trade him tho.

I'd love that too but, unfortunately, it won't happen.

I really liked Williams toughness coming out of Florida State. Dude will hit 'ya.
