Sorry, but I don't believe there's some incriminating video out there, at least not one that can do any damage. In this day and age of social media and how eager people are to share videos, if there was such a video, it would have been leaked by now. All this amounts to is negotiations gamesmanship, and it's not limited to Dez's party and the Cowboys.

Quote="Nirvana, post: 5984113, member: 10984"]On a flipside, how in the heck could such a video escape the hands of TMZ for a few years like this one supposedly has?[/quote]

Million dollar question Nirvana...hard to believe it wouldn't have been sold or released by now. Unless the Jones family "paid them off" and now possess it. But what would prevent a person who may extort from keeping copies? (Rolling my eyes @this whole story)

Not even making a buzz here in Indy. Smh...

Oh, and sometimes, people don't want to separate from your past or make peace with your past and the person you used to be. They want to define you as the person you were and not the better person you are now or who you will be.

I dont really see a problem with what was said. He made it very clear that he doesnt even know if the video is out there but its a commonly discussed issue and the rumor is that one exists. And he said the Cowboys are aware of the rumors.

One thing that stood out to me was that he said the video, if it exists, is old. We'll, I would ask, how old? Is it old enough that even if there was a video it wouldnt be relevant for discipline today?

The only post in this thread worth reading.

What a cruel rumor. Doesn't even say what the video is! Imagine if you are Dez - we've all got a moment we'd hate to have on video.

I don't put anything on video I wouldn't want anyone to see.

Tag him. Let him piss and pout. Loyalty goes both ways. This team is learning from their mistakes thank god, no more albatross contracts, please.

2 years from now, when Dez is giving 1-2 word answers to every question throughout the entire season, the media will complain and make a stink. Noone will remember the day(s) hacks like Florio floated out garbage like this. Unfair to the athlete and unfair to the majority of the media who I believe try to do their job with integrity.

Even if it isn't true, proving libel is one of the most difficult things to do in a court of law. In order for libel to be proved, the following has to apply:
  • The allegation/story has to be false.
  • The person making the allegation or filing the story has to know that it was false, but did it anyway.
  • The person making the false allegation has to be proven to be doing this with malice of forethought, or, in other words, intending to cause damage to the person whom is being falsely accused.
It is one of the most difficult things to prove out in court. Sometimes something isn't libel - it's just poor reporting.

No one here is equipped to comment whether this is true or not, as we do not have enough information to make an assessment one way or another.

Add to your points the fact that Dez is a public figure as opposed to a private figure, and it's increasingly more difficult.

I remember in my journalism law class our teacher citing cases that represented libel. One involved a photographer who took a picture of people walking on a busy metropolitan street/sidewalk. The newspaper ran a picture of an "anonymous" woman with a caption that went somewhat along the lines of "One in five women will contract a venereal disease. Please use protection," or something to that effect.
The woman recognized herself in the picture and sued for libel. A slam dunk case? Yes, except for one thing.

The woman actually had a sexually transmitted disease.

Talk about blind luck, for the newspaper, not for the woman.

Because it's a lot more interesting and generates more traffic than guys like Calvin Johnson, Demarius Thomas, AJ Green who have zero controversy surrounding them.

Which story are you going to click first?

"Dez Bryant and Cowboys are both negotiating very carefully, trying to find the best business option for both themselves and the team. Negotiations are cordial, although there is still much work to be done. If no deal is reached, the Cowboys will likely choose to use the Franchise Tag, which will upset a player who clearly deserves a long term contract."

or

"Troubled Wide Receiver with checkered past and a history of problems who nonetheless dominates on the field (even when alienating teammates and coaches with emotional outbursts) may be hiding a dark secret that is giving pause to the Cowboys brass from signing him. We're told that this new secret would rival Ray Rice and perhaps see Dez out of the league for 2015 and beyond."

The second one. :)

Yup and as a public figure, you would have to prove actual malice.

I'm not sure of that..... NBC's lead anchor Brian Williams just got suspended for multiple lies.....ESPN has more suspensions than the NFL but they keep them quiet...TMZ is an actual source and they are the worst kind of news, they literally buy stories from cops and hospital workers.

It is not about being right, it's about being first. If you throw enough trash against the wall, some of it will stick. If you don't have to pay any penalties when you get it wrong there is no incentive to wait and get it right.

True. But I think more than half try to do their job with integrity.

You have described how most of America gets " fooled by the report" and misses the fact that the original allegation bears little resemblance to the final outcome. Then someone will blurt out " see we were right" and miss the whole point of the sensationalism and actuality of the event....
