Running back candidates

It's all over the twitterverse. "AP threatening retirement if he isn't traded".
Fantastic. Can someone post a tweet quoting Peterson threatening retirement? Or his agent saying his client will retire? Or maybe a pic of him looking disqusted while watching the Eastern Conference Finals? Anything?

Dang it. :(

You have to ask whether or not the Vikings are bitter enough to

a) refuse to trade him
b) refuse to trade him to Dallas

A lot of fans let their desire to have AP wear a star overrule their sense of reality.

The Vikings are not going to let AP walk. They're not going to release him.

They will let him sit as long as he wants to, and they'll simply keep the money they owe him. The only way they trade him is ...

a.) Someone gives them a blockbuster deal for AP
b.) AP sits out until the trade deadline in October.

They are not going to simply release AP. As stubborn as some of you guys are on this forum, I'm surprise you can't understand how pride and stubbornness are strong factors here as well.

Apparently, people think the Vikings are just going to give AP away, and that to another NFC team that has strengthen itself at every other position except running back. And then give this team the brass key to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, the same conference you hope to represent in the Big Game?:lmao::lmao2::laugh::lmao::lmao2:

I would not want to pay a disgruntled RB 12.75m

One bad apple can spoil a locker room

And if he somehow gets "hurt' during camp, they would have to pay him again for nothing

Right, and letting one bad apple get his way also encourages other good apples to act badly so they can get their way too and force their way out of Minnesota.

They might not have a choice.

Not many teams willing to take on that contract, and you can't force him to restructure for just any team.

Will a team let a player rot rather than getting a quality draft pick for him?

Doesn't sound smart to me.

You mean like how Eli forced his way out of San Diego and then won 2 super bowls?

You already know you won't get that... Normally news of this nature is leaked by his agent to drum up exactly what we're seeing now. Like I said, it's going to get interesting. Cowboys or bust.

How did it work for Carson Palmer?

Seriously, I cannot wait for the Giants' game September 13. This madness shall end, one way or another.

It's funny, it definitely isn't just Vikings fans that are pissed on twitter. Looks like fans of all 31 teams are out in arms against Peterson right now.

They all know that if the Cowboys get Peterson, darkness returns to the league for years to come.

The biggest issue for the Vikings is that Peterson's cap hit is 15.4M. That could be reduced to about 7.4M with a restructure, but Peterson would have to agree to the restructure.

They currently have 9.5M in cap space; however, that is just for the off season rule of 51. Once the season starts they have to account for 2 more active players, the practice squad and any players on PUP/IR. Also, they probably have not signed all of their draft picks at this point. If they can handle the 15.4 cap hit, then they can do whatever they want, but if they need that reduced then Peterson has leverage.

Don't think they'll have any issues with the space they have left. This comes down to what they want more. Not to see another team get Peterson and have to play against him or the ability to get a premium draft pick.

The fact that this has gone on so long shows how awful a front office they have.

That player should have been traded months ago.

There was long commentary today on the radio regarding AP.
The guy tied to the Vikings said he's pretty sure that on draft day, Minnesota was making it known that they'd take a 1st to get rid of AP plus is huge salary.
He said that there were no phone calls from any of the 31 other teams.

I'm not sure where that puts things now, but the cost would be a max of a 1st rounder plus inheriting the huge contract.
He also mentioned that currently, there are almost no guarantees for 2015 in AP's contract.

I believe AP has already said he is willing to restructure his contract and take a pay cut to play for another team.

If all they want is a first, make it happen. Hell I'd give them a conditional 3rd round draft pick if we make or win the super bowl.

Exactly...

Just think of it this way… Many on here have stated on multiple occasions that a RB’s life in the fast lane is normally 2-3 years in length. After that, they usually begin to drop off in terms of performance. That’s when referencing a normal top flight RB. AP is not your normal top flight RB. He’s a stud until he chooses to retire. Only very few RBs of that caliber come through the league.

That said, if a RB’s prime is 2-3 years, why not go ahead and drop a draft pick or two with a player TBD to get him here for a couple of years. In essence, you will have added a stud 1st rounder that will give you stud 1st round production for the length of a normal RBs tenure. Makes perfect sense to me AND pretty much guarantees two “deep” trips into the playoffs for the next two years…

It seems to me that Jerry has effectively said that he's OK with giving up next year's 1st rounder, and so am I.

If it means filling what I see as this team's biggest question mark with the best running back in the league, I'm fine with that.

I honestly think it will prove to be laughable at how much less Peterson is willing to take to sign with the Cowboys versus what the Vikings will have to pay to keep him.
