Ben Tate reportedly working out with Dallas Cowboys

Dallas stunned the football world by not going with a running back in this year's NFL Draft, but they may just be hoping for a platoon of veterans to get the job done.

Per an ESPN Report, the Cowboys are working out former Texans, Browns, Vikings and Steelers running back Ben Tate.

Once viewed as the crown jewel of his running back free agency class back in 2014, Tate had a bit of a fall from grace during his first season away from Houston.

He may be hoping to find solace behind the league's best offensive line.

Jerry Jones is wise to load up the backfield behind the oft-injured Darren McFadden, who could have a banner year but could also use some veteran assistance.

Before his dip in 2014, Tate was averaging almost four yards per carry and four yards per reception. The Cowboys are probably interested to see if that version of Tate isn't still hanging around somewhere.

I was on board with mcFadden and Randle being the guys. I bought into what the front office was selling.

But the fact we keep getting linked to wash ups like Tate and others is making me waver in my beliefs. If the front office is so sold on our running situation, why are they investigating more bums?

You nailed it.
They don't believe they have it figured out yet. They are nervous.
Besides the mistake they made letting Murray go to your bitter division rivals over a relatively small difference in salary, they passed on several backs in the draft. Now we are checking out the players that may not even play in the NFL this year if not for us.

Not especially long. Does he still have the capability to run as he did as a rookie? That's what they're going to see. He understands a zone scheme. Why did Tate struggle the last few years? Health? Quality of offensive lines? I wouldn't rule him out or anyone that could help us.

Not sure this guy fights the RKG mold, had a couple of good years but was a head case in the locker room. Guy fell off a cliff after leaving Houston....Cut by Cleveland, Minn and Pitt. Got paid and stopped playing.

Tate's 2014 season was draped in red flags as he was outplayed by Isaiah Crowell/Terrance West in Cleveland, complained about his role and was released. He then bounced to Minnesota and Pittsburgh, continuing to show zero burst Tate started and got the Steelers' first four carries, but played behind Josh Harris and Dri Archer for the rest of the game. He dropped a pass late in the fourth quarter that was intercepted by Ravens LB Terrell Suggs. Tate is unlikely to be back with the Steelers next season and could struggle to attract interest on the open market.

What do McFadden and Tate have in common?

Pollack has seen both of them in person in his scheme.

McFadden didn't work out well with him, but Tate did. Tate could be competition for Dunbar.

Heck I like the fact Tate is coming in to work out with the Cowboys. From watching him when he was in Houston the guy showed the ability as an all around RB.

@robphillips3: No names confirmed by the team, but look for the Cowboys to work out a group of WRs and RBs today. Not uncommon with a 90-man roster.

He was better than Brady last year and it wasn't close. The only thing the Patriots had better than us last year was their defense, and it was only marginally better. We've made a lot better investments in our defense than they did this offseason.

It wasn't close huh?
Romo 3700 yards 34 TD's
Brady 4100 yards 33 TD's

Then there was this little super bowl championship thing.
Seems pretty close. Saying he better be Tom Brady isn't a knock on Romo. It's just a fact that Brady is exceptional every year. We better get a performance next year from Romo like we got last year.

8.52 yards per attempt and 69.9 percent completion percentage

vs

7.06 yards per attempt and 64.1 percent completion percentage

Brady has 1 less touchdown than Romo and yet he threw the ball 150 times more than Romo did.

Well he's no speed demon but he has versatility and has had flashes of elusiveness. I'm all for taking a look. Can't hurt.

It sure goes directly against any claims that what we currently have is "good enough" or that the running game is "better".

If this workout rumor is true, it flies directly in the face of those claims.
With that logic they can't work out WRs or OL because they feel good about those positions. This is nothing out of the ordinary.

I'm not advocating Tate, but he actually did look good in his two games before Alex Mack got hurt (averaged 6.8 and 5.6 YPC). That interior of the line was hot garbage for the rest of October and November, plus they had two rookies that they wanted to get in the mix. Tate got frustrated, popped off a little and out he went.

Just say you were wrong when you said it wasn't even close. Wasn't even close? All the stats look very close with some favoring Brady and some favoring Romo. Brady won another Super Bowl with no real running backs and no real receivers surrounding him. Give the man the credit he deserves.

What about Romo having a quarterback rating 16 point higher than Brady (Romo led the league) and having a 9 point higher QBR (Romo led the league)?
