Looks like a #21 on every helmet (around the league) as well.

I know there's a #21 patch for the Commanders jerseys, but I don't know about the patch around the league.

Portis switching his number to #21 is confirmed, though.

that would be nice for every team to wear #21 on their helmet, the #21 jersey patch would be great too but I don't know if that will be allowed. hopefully the NFL let teams show their respect and wear the #21.

I haven't posted yet in this thread. I like what I'm seeing for the most part. I think it's important that we, as sports fans, remember that we are fans of a GAME.

Taylor was a man......and from what I've read, he was turning his life around. I think it's always a tragedy when people die so young. You always want to see a person reach their full potential.....I'm not talking football here....I'm talking about his potential as a human-being.

RIP Shaun Taylor......May your family be blessed.....

I always have had respect for Skins fans. Every year I look forward to the Cowboy/Commander games. This year I'll be watching with a heavy heart.

I don't know if Portis should be allowed to do that. Number 21 should be retired for the Commanders IMO. Out of respect I don't think any other Commander should wear it.

I agree. But, I think this week is an exception. He just lost one of his closest friends and emotions for the team (and all teams) will be running high this weekend. I don't think it would be disrespectful for him to wear it this weekend, but after that it should be retired.

I was hoping for the best late last night after the encouraging sign of the hand squeeze and woke up to the worst news possible.

This travesty can never be fixed.

A one year old girl is never going to know her father.

Parents should never have to live through burying their children.

I agree, nobody should ever wear that number again for the Skins....

Great jobs Mods, on the Gesture. And great job by Commanders fans acknowledging the gesture.

Like most, I felt the same sadness about the death. What a wasted life and bright future snuffed out.

The Commanders have kind of a strange policy about retiring numbers...while numbers like 44 and 81 have not been used since their HOF predecessors, they have not been retired officially...but I still doubt they are ever used again.

I think they should retire his number. If this had happened 2 years ago it would still have been a tragedy, but its even more of one now that he was becoming responsible and by all accounts a great father to his infant child. I really think he would have one of the all time great free safeties in the mold of Ronnie Lott...but unfortunately we will never know. More importantly, we will never get to see the kind of person and leader he would have become if he had remained here for his career. We were beginning to see the glimpses this year.

We kinda do the same thing. We don't "retire" numbers, but folks never seem to wear certain numbers in the regular season.

#74
#12

These have been worn in the PS, but when the regular season comes around the players are issued new numbers.

Anyway, I think Portis is doing something to show respect and love for a friend. I don't think there's anything wrong with it being worn one last time...but I certainly would like to see it retired afterward.

I was going to use this photo to mock the Skins fans who had descended upon this board last week, but forgot about it. Now that I look at it again, I think it's quite complimentary of Taylor. You can tell that something went wrong and he cares about it.

I was thinking earlier how many have expressed how things will get better. While I do agree that time will heal wounds, just think - every time we play the Commanders, we will think of Sean Taylor. In the offseason when the Commanders look for a replacement at safety, we will think of Sean Taylor. Years from now when we look back on their team, we will think, "if only they still had Sean Taylor, how things could have been different."

It's devestating to lose anyone that young, a teammate, a player you follow and cheer for and respect, but man, I can't imagine what it must feel like to be a Commanders fan at this time. It will heal somewhat, but never really leave. What it we had lost a DeMarcus Ware, or Jason Witten, or Romo? A young leader of the team, not yet even in his prime. Taylor hadn't even peaked, yet. Ugh. I'm still in disbelief over this.

Such a cruel, cruel day. Our hearts are with you.

You're right about thinking about Sean Taylor. I know personally this tragedy is gonna effect the way I watch the Commanders...knowing he's not there. He was one badass safety...still young and coming into his own. He was basicly the face of the Commanders defense. When you think Commanders defense..you think Sean Taylor. He'll be truely missed.

I'm not just a fan of the Cowboys..but i'm a fan of the NFL..& today the NFL lost a really good safety.

In a way I'm not as excited as I was for the upcoming Packers game after this...

In light of the recent tragedy, I just want to say how saddened I am, not only for the Taylor family, the Commander family, the NFL family, but for the American family. Despite all of our differences, we are humans who our imperfect and sometimes forget how precious life is and how fortunate we are to wake up each day...it is never guarranteed. Be thankful for each moment you have, each friendship you share, and never go to bed wondering how you will be remembered by everyone should they never see your face again due to unexpected events. Tell those you love how much you love them, tell those you can't stand that you really do care about them, even if you have differences.

In honor of Sean, my sig will be removed until after the Super Bowl. May he rest in peace.

Rachel Nichols reported that the intruder broke into the locked bedroom, where Sean, his girlfriend and their baby were sleeping. Taylor's girlfriend grabbed the baby and hid underneath the covers while Sean got shot. I can only imagine how horrifying this experience has been for the people he was taken from.

God Bless Sean Taylor and those who loved him.

.

Thank you mods for honoring Sean Taylor.

I never thought I'd sign up here, but I just wanted to come in to thank you guys for all the well wishes and sentiments. The tribute in the upper right is appreciated. I know alot of guys who are regulars at ES will know me, like tonyromoprobowl, BigDFan, Terrence Newman41, etc. Thanks guys. Even though I didn't personally know Sean, reading all the forums on ES gets me choked up. You guys have been classy through it all.
