He always has been all in.
I have nothing against Dak. I didn't say I would be against it if Dak won a competition. I said I may not agree with it. And I also may agree with it. Just as I have agreed and disagreed with many other choices the team has made.
If you aren't afraid or against the competition, then maybe not act that way and let your bias show by trying to tear down one player.
I welcome as much competition as we can get. It makes the team better.
You don't make your 23 year old franchise quarterback who just won 13 games compete for his job. It's tasteless.
But this discussion will always come back to salary cap and health. Both Romo and Dak are better at certain aspects of the position but in today's NFL, other factors come into play. The starter isn't only determined by performance because those other factors affect the team's ability to win.Of course there is a ctiteria. The starting job goes to the quarterback that does the best job of creating offense and guiding his team down the field to score points.
Competition isnt just desirable, it is critical because it forces players to give more than they would if no competition exists. The problem with prior team was that Jerry would sign players to these huge contracts that practically awarded them the starting position before training camp even begun. So, the player has the huge contract, automatically became the starter, why did he even have to try, what was their motivation?
The team will not split, they don't prefer one player over the other out of sentimentality, above all, they want to win. They will go.with the guy they that plays the best and they get aserious first row seat to the competitipn so they will definitely know who is the best choice to start.
Let me also say that I am a Dak fan and I am a Romo fan but above all, I am a Cowboy fan. I want the best team the Cowboys can possibly create and I believe the backup quarterback position is more critical than even some of the starting positions.
I think you make some very good points. And I've used the same argument about $ allocation to any given position and what it is relative to the league average, etc. it's very true that keeping Tony really doesn't create an inordinate amount of money dedicated to the QB position relative to what we see across the NFL. Here's why I am leaning towards taking the gamble and releasing Tony - and I think this has been stated in several past threads: we have an opportunity to dramatically improve this roster ACROSS THE BOARD with the "Romo dividend"...in much the same manner that the Seahawks did with a a young Wilson. And they've parlayed that into a perennial SB contending unit (although they've obviously neglected the Oline severely for whatever reason). I think the opportunity to do the same over the next two seasons is too great to pass up as it sets us up for a potential dynasty run. I think that trade off is worth it in my view. I take that risk (knowing that losing Dak is a possibility that makes us vulnerable) and try and hedge it with a decent "John Kitna" level backup. I think this needs to be the course we follow as we could build a team for the ages in those two-three more seasons before we have to pay Dak his money (assuming he follows the Wilson trajectory).Only 13 of the 32 NFL team's starting quarterbacks played in all 16 regular season games. Two teams lost their starter before the season even began, including the Dallas Cowboys. They lost Tony Romo shortly after they lost his backup.
Three teams in playoff contention lost their starting quarterback less than a month before the playoffs began. None of them made it past the wildcard round.
72 different quarterbacks started an NFL game in the 2016 season.
Dak Prescott was fortunate to stay healthy and play all 16 games in 2016. Teddy Bridgewater did the same in 2015. In the combined seasons of 2014 and 2015 only 9 quarterbacks started all 32 games. two of them were Derek Carr and Ryan Tannehill.
Injuries happen, we are certainly aware of that. Injuries to your starting quarterback will almost always devastate a team's season. We are certainly aware of that as well.
Suppose Dak Prescott had started his career the same as the average quarterback drafted in the 4th round. He would be either 2nd or 3rd team and might get a handful of snaps assuming Romo and/or his primary backup had stayed healthy. If you were to add up their salaries for 2017 under those circumstances there wouldn't be any difference under the events that really happened. Regardless of who the starter is, that number would have remained the same under either circumstance.
Would a trade of Tony result in better options than a Pro Bowl caliber backup quarterback?
Tony Romo wants to be a starter in this league. Let him prove it. Jason Garrett had stated when he first became HC, competition will be active at all times. Let both quarterbacks compete. The best man will start. They are both competitors. At the very least, it will make them both stronger for the regular season.
This will not divide the team, who will witness the competition first hand. earning your position is always going to be respected by teammates.
There is a far higher probability that both quarterbacks will start games in 2017. it could very well be that Tony room's best opportunity to play in a Super Bowl is the Dallas Cowboys. That possibility increases dramatically with the knowledge that an injury to the most important position on the team will not only be absorbed, Pro Bowl level performance will be consistent.
The Dallas Cowboys are not obligated to surrender Tony Romo. The cap reflects the salary of an elite starter and a player in his 2nd year. We will not have to suffer the feeling of a season lost because a single player went down. And that is a feeling we are certainly aware of.

I have a story about being the opening act for a tractor pull / monster truck show and it involves a near-death experience.Call him the Grave Digger
He was but I am curious to see how he deals and plays with injuriesDak is a monster truck.......guys bounce off him
I would keep Romo at 5m though for as long as he wanted to play
This would be bad for the Cowboys and Bad for Romo, he deserves a chance to throw a few more game ending interceptions before he waddles into a football player and breaks something again.
Romo must be youre first? Youll get over it and realize he never really gave you what you really needed and left you unsatisfied and quiverring for more. Especially when Daks giving it to you real good, exactly how you really need it every game. Aikman, now that was a qb

So is Cam. Nothing ensures no injuries.Dak is a monster truck.......guys bounce off him

You can't have it both ways............if Tony is injury prone then Dak is an injury deflectorSo is Cam. Nothing ensures no injuries.
You have a point.Get glass man out of here before he breaks. If he breaks before, we'll never get anything for him.
