The best thing for the Cowboys would be to keep Romo.

He always has been all in.

I have nothing against Dak. I didn't say I would be against it if Dak won a competition. I said I may not agree with it. And I also may agree with it. Just as I have agreed and disagreed with many other choices the team has made.

If you aren't afraid or against the competition, then maybe not act that way and let your bias show by trying to tear down one player.

I welcome as much competition as we can get. It makes the team better.

You don't make your 23 year old franchise quarterback who just won 13 games compete for his job. It's tasteless.

That's a loser mentality. And wrongheaded with the whole QB won and not the team.

You don't make an elite veteran compete for his job either, I guess.

Every single player should have to compete, as much as possible.

Of course there is a ctiteria. The starting job goes to the quarterback that does the best job of creating offense and guiding his team down the field to score points.

Competition isnt just desirable, it is critical because it forces players to give more than they would if no competition exists. The problem with prior team was that Jerry would sign players to these huge contracts that practically awarded them the starting position before training camp even begun. So, the player has the huge contract, automatically became the starter, why did he even have to try, what was their motivation?

The team will not split, they don't prefer one player over the other out of sentimentality, above all, they want to win. They will go.with the guy they that plays the best and they get aserious first row seat to the competitipn so they will definitely know who is the best choice to start.

Let me also say that I am a Dak fan and I am a Romo fan but above all, I am a Cowboy fan. I want the best team the Cowboys can possibly create and I believe the backup quarterback position is more critical than even some of the starting positions.
But this discussion will always come back to salary cap and health. Both Romo and Dak are better at certain aspects of the position but in today's NFL, other factors come into play. The starter isn't only determined by performance because those other factors affect the team's ability to win.

Only 13 of the 32 NFL team's starting quarterbacks played in all 16 regular season games. Two teams lost their starter before the season even began, including the Dallas Cowboys. They lost Tony Romo shortly after they lost his backup.

Three teams in playoff contention lost their starting quarterback less than a month before the playoffs began. None of them made it past the wildcard round.

72 different quarterbacks started an NFL game in the 2016 season.

Dak Prescott was fortunate to stay healthy and play all 16 games in 2016. Teddy Bridgewater did the same in 2015. In the combined seasons of 2014 and 2015 only 9 quarterbacks started all 32 games. two of them were Derek Carr and Ryan Tannehill.

Injuries happen, we are certainly aware of that. Injuries to your starting quarterback will almost always devastate a team's season. We are certainly aware of that as well.

Suppose Dak Prescott had started his career the same as the average quarterback drafted in the 4th round. He would be either 2nd or 3rd team and might get a handful of snaps assuming Romo and/or his primary backup had stayed healthy. If you were to add up their salaries for 2017 under those circumstances there wouldn't be any difference under the events that really happened. Regardless of who the starter is, that number would have remained the same under either circumstance.

Would a trade of Tony result in better options than a Pro Bowl caliber backup quarterback?

Tony Romo wants to be a starter in this league. Let him prove it. Jason Garrett had stated when he first became HC, competition will be active at all times. Let both quarterbacks compete. The best man will start. They are both competitors. At the very least, it will make them both stronger for the regular season.

This will not divide the team, who will witness the competition first hand. earning your position is always going to be respected by teammates.

There is a far higher probability that both quarterbacks will start games in 2017. it could very well be that Tony room's best opportunity to play in a Super Bowl is the Dallas Cowboys. That possibility increases dramatically with the knowledge that an injury to the most important position on the team will not only be absorbed, Pro Bowl level performance will be consistent.

The Dallas Cowboys are not obligated to surrender Tony Romo. The cap reflects the salary of an elite starter and a player in his 2nd year. We will not have to suffer the feeling of a season lost because a single player went down. And that is a feeling we are certainly aware of.
I think you make some very good points. And I've used the same argument about $ allocation to any given position and what it is relative to the league average, etc. it's very true that keeping Tony really doesn't create an inordinate amount of money dedicated to the QB position relative to what we see across the NFL. Here's why I am leaning towards taking the gamble and releasing Tony - and I think this has been stated in several past threads: we have an opportunity to dramatically improve this roster ACROSS THE BOARD with the "Romo dividend"...in much the same manner that the Seahawks did with a a young Wilson. And they've parlayed that into a perennial SB contending unit (although they've obviously neglected the Oline severely for whatever reason). I think the opportunity to do the same over the next two seasons is too great to pass up as it sets us up for a potential dynasty run. I think that trade off is worth it in my view. I take that risk (knowing that losing Dak is a possibility that makes us vulnerable) and try and hedge it with a decent "John Kitna" level backup. I think this needs to be the course we follow as we could build a team for the ages in those two-three more seasons before we have to pay Dak his money (assuming he follows the Wilson trajectory).

Although I agree with you that we are in no position to force Tony's release if we so choose.

Your question: Would a trade of Tony result in better options than a Pro Bowl caliber backup quarterback?

Answer: Yes, Romo's salaries for the next 3 years are 14M, 19.5M and 20.5M. That's 18M average. You can get a top free agent DE or CB for those numbers over the first 3 years of their contract. Olivier Vernon's huge contract with the Giants last year averaged 17M. If they also got something in trade, that would be a bonus.

Your statement: This will not divide the team, who will witness the competition first hand. earning your position is always going to be respected by teammates.

Response: You can't really determine the best QB from a training camp competition. Things like Dak's ability to run can't be measured in practice. If they did it in preseason games that means that Romo is taking hits. At this point if you did want Romo to play this season, you would not want him to take hits in preseason. If he intentionally avoids hits in the preseason that he might not in the regular season, then his effectiveness will be limited and he won't look any better than Dak in the preseason games. In the preseason, defenses don't game plan or play complicated coverage schemes. The area where Romo would win is in terms of reading complicated defensive schemes so he won't be able to show that in the preseason. You already have game film of both QBs. You don't need training camp or preseason games to know what they can do. The only thing you don't know if how many hits Romo can take before being out again. It's not going to be obvious to many player which QB actually "won" the job.

Comments:
If the Broncos are really interested in Romo, then ask for Trevor Siemian as part of the return in the trade. They already have Lynch who they're developing to be the eventual #1, so they would not need Siemian if Romo was their starter. Siemian has won a fair number of NFL games so he would be a good backup to Dak.

If the Texas are interested in Romo, then have them pay the majority of Osweiler's 2017 salary and request that he be part of the return in the trade. Osweiler played most of the games in 2016 and they made it to the playoffs. He should be a good backup QB to Dak.

The momentum is already with Dak. It seems obvious that the majority of players are on-board with Dak. Making Romo the starter at this point would create a really odd dynamic in the locker room after Dak led them to a 13-3 season as a rookie.

Romo does not want to be a backup.

Romo will want a decision early in free agency and Jerry will try to accommodate him.

Romo would be the one getting screwed if we kept him. He would have to take a big pay cut to be the backup because the team isn't going to pay him $14M to carry a clipboard. It would cost him a lot of money to stay and it would cost him what's little left in his career wasting it on the sidelines. Every single arrow is pointing to him not being with the Cowboys in 2017. Romo could start for a number of teams, he's not a backup QB and that's just another of the many reasons he won't be back with the Cowboys next season.

Every backup QB in the league has no choice but to be backups. They all understand their situation and accept their role if they want to continue their NFL careers. Romo isn't going to accept being a backup QB when he's better than probably half the starting QBs in the league. The only fear with him is injuries and because of that and his age, he's not a long-term answer for anyone. The only reason he ended up our backup was due to injuries.

This would be bad for the Cowboys and Bad for Romo, he deserves a chance to throw a few more game ending interceptions before he waddles into a football player and breaks something again.

Romo must be youre first? Youll get over it and realize he never really gave you what you really needed and left you unsatisfied and quiverring for more. Especially when Daks giving it to you real good, exactly how you really need it every game. Aikman, now that was a qb

You sound like you've dated men of inadequate length and capabilities,,,keep her head up ,you'll find your fulfillment soon enough.

If there is a competition, the salary implication would likely already be desired. It's very unlikely there is a competition. If there is one, it would probably take an agreement on a salary reduction by Romo.

Not one dollar of Romo's 14m dollar salary is guaranteed.....that means it has very little real value.....it is a team option that doesn't become real until Week One

His 2018-19 salaries of 20m are even more fake.......they were always just placeholders to make the deal look bigger.....Tony signed a 4/68m extension for 2014-17.....with the 2 dummy years it looked like 6/108m....they are all just team options, not player options

Tony's only leverage is retirement and even then he could be forced to pay back 12.5m in signing bonuses because he is only 1/2 through his fake deal

If and it's a big IF Tony wants to stay in DAL it will be as a backup for around 5m... it won't be for 14m

DAL routinely asks for pay cuts from vets like Free, Carr, Ware, Bern and others to extend their time in Dallas...they will probably ask Romo and Witten for cuts this year...Romo was always willing to give money back in the past to help acquire talent and I see no reason why he won't do it again

Moving to a new city at his age with soon to be 3 kids right after building his dream home is a lot to ask.....when he can stay in DAL indefinitely for 5m a year to bak up Dak.... he also wants to play golf and catch with his kids in the future....how many back surgeries is enough?

Get glass man out of here before he breaks. If he breaks before, we'll never get anything for him.

You have a point.
Not sure we can get much for Tony, but another injury would mean zero for sure.

But regarding the "glass man" comment....my guess is that old glass man Romo--raised my a miltary boxer and a guy whos been in gloves since childhood-- could pound your mouth-running, couch sitting, chest puffing butt into small tiny granuals.
Just a hunch. Could be wrong
