Swanson the CB which means our coverage just got worse overall because we only have 4 true corners which means Jones will probably play more corner and Wilcox will play more FS
Swanson was the 53rd player on the roster and wasn't even active. This has zero effect on the secondary. The only reason Swanson made the team was because he flashed as a return guy. Everyone and their dog knew he'd be the first to go.

Meanwhile, Mayowa records a sack and the $80 million dollar savior (Vernon) went 0-fer. (but he played the run really really good).

Troll nation won't go near that one this week, but it's there.

Vernon had to go against Smith, so as a Cowboys fan, I tend to give the credit for Vernon not having a sack to our All-Pro.

I'm glad Mayowa got a sack, though.

Fair enough, but Vernon was brought to the NYGs because he "beat Tyron like a drum in Miami last year". The other LTs in our division aren't too far of a step behind Tyron, either. It's only one week but if Vernon only puts up the 6-7 sacks a year that he did in Miami, I'd be pissed if I were a Giants fan.

I'll go ahead and say it, now. I'll bet Mayowa finishes the season within two sacks of Vernon when it's all said and done. At that point, our guy looks like a pile of gold (in comparison) and Vernon looks like a pile of......well....you know.

I certainly would not have paid him like that based on his production, but I'm sure Smith was motivated to make up for that performance last year. Of course, Chaz Green also kept Vernon off the quarterback while he was in for Smith.

I agree that the value could turn out to be much better as far as sacks go with Mayowa. Vernon was the better player overall, though, making several plays against the run.

The Giants overpaid but they got a good player, not one who is going to lead the league in sacks, but one who is going to be very good all-around.

Agreed, but he's not 80 million dollars "good all around". Considering cost vs. production I'm not sure he'll even be in the top ten as for as off-season FA siginings. We'll see, I guess.

He was a desperation signing for a team that wanted to proactively fix its defensive front. Desperation leads to overpaying, but I think the Giants will consider him worth the $80 million if he helps that defense return to the level it was playing at during its Super Bowl runs.

Frankly, I would have felt better about the Cowboys overspending for the same reasons. The Giants have shown with a good defense and running game that you can win with a quarterback like Eli. The Cowboys have not followed that formula and we've seen the results despite having a better QB.

Honest question: would you have been OK with the Cowboy spending 80 million dollars (54 guaranteed) on Olivier Vernon? And, if not, who would you have spent that kind of money on (that was available)?

Yes, I would have been OK with it. He was considered the best pass rusher available and I would have seen it as at least an attempt to get better at the position.

But I don't get all caught up in money like some do. I believe that the salary cap is made to be manipulated and the only time moves really hurt a team is when they fail to pan out. I don't think Vernon will fail to improve the Giants' defense. With the additions of him and Harrison, they already have shown improvement.

I can't say the additions of Mayowa and Thornton have done the same for us, so yes, I would have been for the team sinking some money into the defensive line so there might be a chance that we actually win a Super Bowl before we no longer have Romo and Witten.

Vernon also played a lot more snaps than Mayowa. Don't get me wrong, Vernon is the more rounded player but the Summer's Eve crew wailed all summer long about the fact that the Giants were selling out to improve the defense and Jerry sat on his hands. Now, it's only one week but the pay to output ratio fell in Mayowa's favor this week (let's be honest Vernon was brought in to collect sacks, specifically against that guy that he "dominated" last year in Miami who happens to play LT for the Cowboys). Again, It's just one week, but for the rolling tally so far, we got more bang for our buck.

We'll see how that continues to play out.

Good post and rebuttal, BTW.

The Giants defense shut down our vaunted OL and run game
The Giants have a much better defense than we do
The Giants won the game

So just stop with the excuses

Fair enough. Not the route I would take but I respect you point of view. And yes, the salary cap can be manipulated......to the tune of sending a guy like Ware on the FA market. That's where I draw the line at a JAG like Vernon for 80 million. If I have to let Martin or Fredbeard go because I blew it on a dude like Vernon, I would be beyond pissed.

Not sure where I offered any excuses there, Mr. Wizard but OK.

Run along, now.

"Davis becomes the Cowboys' sack leader now. His 11 is more than any other player on the Cowboys' roster. The previous leader for the Cowboys was cornerback Orlando Scandrick with 10.5"

Brandon Carr was once considered the best CB available in FA.

Run stopping, sure. Otherwise..................

He was brought to NY to rush the passer. If Irving or Mayowa would have had the same game the first crack around here would have been that they still couldn't rush the passer. You can deny it if you wish, but I've been around here long enough to know better.
