No I hear you Dave in that I much enjoyed our success this season with the running game. I meant more so that formula didn't produce a playoff winning formula. DAL was a much more talented team (overall) than both GB and DET but the team hid in the playoffs. They weren't aggressive and relied on the running game; leaving the games close and relying on our D. If the team embraced Dez instead of Murray through the playoff run, we would have a SB. So Murray was great to get us to the playoffs, but didn't produce what the team needed (control over the game).

It would have been nice to see more Dez for the playoffs I agree. But I think the thought was to protect our defense more and more in those games.
If Murray scores instead of fumbles in the Packers game their plan probably works. We will never know but I can't blame the staff for trying to help out the D neither. I think we are set on offense, keep Murray and worry about defense. I don't think it needs a whole lot.
But with it upgraded I think we can open up the offense a little more.

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain finished tied for second in the Comeback Player of the Year voting to New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

i

Lee Gronkowski returned from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2013 and caught 82 passes for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2014. McClain finished tied with Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who also came back from a torn ACL.

McClain’s comeback was self-imposed because of an early retirement. His comeback, however, was worthy of winning the award.

The Cowboys could have another linebacker be a serious candidate for Comeback Player of the Year in 2015 with Sean Lee recovering from a torn ACL.

Lee was doing on-field rehab work by the end of the season and said he was feeling really good. The Cowboys will need him to return fully healthy in order to help improve a defense that was better than expected in 2014 but still average.

Lee is their best playmaker. He would be a sure bet to record 100 tackles. He has a nose for the football. If McClain re-signs, Lee could move to weakside linebacker, which is the playmaking position in the Cowboys’4-3 scheme. If he sticks as the middle linebacker, he’ll still be in position to make a ton of plays.

Lee won’t be the only Cowboy making a comeback.

CB Morris Claiborne -- He will likely need the full offseason for rehab and possibly the early part of training camp before he can get back on the field as he returns from a torn patellar tendon. Claiborne is entering the final year of his contract.

DE Jack Crawford -- Just as he was playing his best ball, he suffered a broken thumb that required season-ending surgery. He should be good to go for the offseason and could play a vital role in the defensive line rotation.

DT Amobi Okoye -- He was kept on the non-football illness list all season as he continued to come back from anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, which left him in a coma for parts of 2012. The Cowboys signed him to a two-year deal last year in hopes of really getting something from him in 2015. Maybe he can fill a backup role.

DE Ben Gardner -- A seventh-round pick in 2014, his rookie season was lost due to a shoulder injury. He will be ready to go for the offseason, as well. The coaches were highly intrigued by him going into training camp. He has a non-stop motor and is a better athlete than people think.

DT Chris Whaley -- He was signed as an undrafted free agent last year knowing he would need to redshirt in 2014 because of a knee injury. The extra time getting his knee ready will help him get stronger overall. Entering the draft, he drew comparisons to Henry Melton. Maybe he can develop.

OT Darrion Weems -- He dislocated his shoulder in training camp and needed surgery that ended his season. He has been around for a couple of years, so the Cowboys see something. Maybe he can develop into the swing tackle with the Cowboys likely unable to keep Doug Free and Jermey Parnell.

I'm excited to see what Ben Gardner's got. If he follows in the improvement path that Tyrone Crawford has, he will be a nice surprise addition.

Also the possibility of Lee and McClain together could be dynamic.

Come on dude, it was a terrible signing:rolleyes: In a 4-3 esp, we basically need to resign everybody but Hitchens to compensate for Lee's "status". That's a terrible way for a DC to plan for the year...?

Lee was signed with a contract heavy on incentives. So he came relatively cheap. That's actually a very smart signing.

Injuries are part of the game, sometimes it takes a few years to get completely healthy. Often depending on the injury, a player will over compensate for it, and put stress on another part of the body, then that part gets an injury, even if minor.
I'll wait and see how they all recover.

however, I do not like the drafting of players knowing they are coming off an injury, unless it's a 7th round pick, and is not needed for depth. So can red-shirt them for a year. Whaley was a freebie in a way since he was signed as a FA.

I think Mo can have value as to giving us some depth, and a role player, or even a slot player.
As for LB's I wouldn't mind having Lee, McClain, Hitchins, Durant, Carter, and a draft pick. Then if they keep 7, a FA or 2 draft picks.
I think Cam Lawrence and Wilbur can be replaced, though they do play good ST's.

Claiborne was the bad luck chip in this defense. When he went down, defense improved. Dude can't play. He's been given plenty of opportunity. Cut 'em loose. Commanders need corners.

Not really counting on Lee at all he's been far too injury prone for me to have faith he'll bounce back from a serious injury and have an injury free season. I'll believe it when I see it.

Agree.....And that is why I cut him. Take that money and resign our free agents to be.

You can't just cut him you take a cap hit I believe he's due 2.5 million in 2015. Can't imagine the Cowboys would cut him after just signing him to a $42 million extension in 2013. The mistake Jerry made was rushing to resign him he should have waited to see if he could stay healthy for a full season.

The value is great for a talented player (don't get me wrong). I just think the fact that you can't rely on his talent minimizes any savings we got in the deal.

How about we re-sign Carter and go with

Carter-Hitchens-Lee

Could this be an option?

No, we need Ro McClains intimidating presence. He brings attitude and swagger to that side of the ball, much like Murray does on the other side. These are not guys you get rid of. These are guys who help win Super Bowls. Rolando McClain is the Charles Haley of this group.

I too was disappointed the Cowboys didn't utilize Dez more. He did his part by drawing double (and even triple) coverage most of the game but none of the receivers could consistently produce to take pressure off of him like Randle Cobb and Devonte Adams did for GB. That and Dallas only threw the ball nineteen times.

Murray did perform well in the playoffs. 120+ yards in the GB game I think. The critical fumble over shadows his overall performance.

Lee has missed more games than Gronk. Lee couldn't even make it through his first OTA practice last year without tearing up his knee. He had an injury history in college and was wearing a knee brace when he arrived in Dallas. We don't know if he'll even be the same player after this injury I'm certainly not counting on him.

How could it be a good contract when he ended up missing 6 games after his signed it and proceeded to miss the entire season the following year? How could it be a good contract when it helped cost the Cowboys Demarcus Ware? Lee has missed more games than he's played in and will 29 by the start of next season. It could take a year for him to return to form after his latest injury if he ever does return to form. Aging players don't all of a sudden stop getting hurt.

Ware? You mean the guy who dissapeared in the second half of the season, and was a no show in the playoff game against the Colts? That guy? Dallas missed him so much. NOT

Ware had 10 sacks this season which was 4 more than anyone on the Cowboys defense. Had the Cowboys had him they might have been able to apply some pressure on Colt McCoy helping the Cowboys win that game which would have given the team the #1 seed. Having to account for Ware might have helped the Cowboys apply some pressure on Aaron Rodgers in the second half of their playoff game. A gimpy Rodgers was able to sit back and pick the defense apart in the second half due to no pressure. Opponents having to account for Ware could have opened up pressure and sack opportunities for other players on the defense. Anyone who doesn't think Ware wouldn't have helped the defense this season is kidding themselves.
