Sean Lee heads list of Cowboys' comebacks

Ware had 10 sacks this season which was 4 more than anyone on the Cowboys defense. Had the Cowboys had him they might have been able to apply some pressure on Colt McCoy helping the Cowboys win that game which would have given the team the #1 seed. Having to account for Ware might have helped the Cowboys apply some pressure on Aaron Rodgers in the second half of their playoff game. A gimpy Rodgers was able to sit back and pick the defense apart in the second half due to no pressure. Opponents having to account for Ware could have opened up pressure and sack opportunities for other players on the defense. Anyone who doesn't think Ware wouldn't have helped the defense this season is kidding themselves.
Maybe/Maybe not. The only thing you can speak factually to is the contract he would have played under. We weren't willing to pay that price so we let him go. That was a controversial business decision I know but the majority knew it was the smart decision to make even if it felt like a kick to the gut.

Ware proved in Denver he's still a very good player he was only 4 sacks behind Von Miller who led the Broncos with 14 sacks. No doubt in my mind he would have made the Cowboys defense better in 2014 giving them more of a pass rush. He's a player that has to be accounted for which helps free up other players to the QB. The Cowboys had some defensive players step up this season and they all would have been even better with Ware in the mix.

Ware got 10 sacks for 10m- almost all in the first 8 games

Mincey and DLaw got 8 sacks for 2m- almost all the last 8 games

They may have gotten more sacks had opponents had to account for Ware he still puts fear in opponents. The Cowboys had no one on defense who had to be accounted for or who scared anyone. DLaw and DWare would have made great bookends and it would have benefitted DLaw. Ware helped free up Von Miller who had the second most sacks of his career. Ware brings more to the table than just sacks.

In a perfect world sure. But without knowing they'd be 12-4 and with a 16m cap hit, releasing Ware was the only move.

Ware he still puts fear in opponents.

He stopped getting double teamed. Teams didn't fear him like they once did. His reputation and name recognition made big splashes in the media because of his past accomplishments. I was shocked how invisible he was the second half of this year.

Not to mention we wouldn't have all those same pieces on defense of we had been paying ware his 12 million. It's about cost vs production. I damn sure am not giving you 12 million for 10 sacks. And by midpoint of the season people weren't double teaming ware anymore. His body broke down once again as it has been doing this past few years

He stopped being double teamed because of Von Miller who's more feared than Ware at this stage in their careers. He faded just like he faded with the Cowboys in 2013 not sure if he was battling an injury or just wore down as the season went on. Miller produced 9 sacks the first 8 games and 5 sacks the second half of the season so his sacks totals also declined the latter part of the season. Neither him or Ware had a sack in the playoffs.

Mincey came pretty cheap and so did McClain. Melton didn't provide a whole lot and didn't play in the playoffs due to an injury and he was the highest priced of the 3. He missed some games with injuries and provided little the second half of the season. We'll see if the Cowboys decide to bring him back. Ware's body is breaking down but he had at least a half sack in 9 of his first 12 games this past season. His last sack was in week 13 but he did have 5 combined tackles in the Broncos final 2 games of the regular season. He had 4 combined tackles in his one playoff game.

If I owned the Cowboys I would have dumped Lee before Ware at least Ware rarely misses games. Lee has been a huge waste of money he's missed more games than he's played over the 5 years he's been with the team and you can never count on him to being healthy in Dec. He's pushing 30 I doubt his body will hold up past 32.

Lee has a contract and cap number we can absorb without problems, Ware didn't.

He stopped being double teamed when he was still a Cowboy.

Some teams still double teamed him his final season with the Cowboys until he got hurt. He started the 2013 season with 4 sacks and an int in his first 3 games which was one of the best starts of his career then he got hurt.

They'll be some problems trying to absorb it if he can no longer play and the team ends up having to eat his contract. The Cowboys aren't set at LB even with McClain so they have to add LB's if Lee can't play or isn't ready for week one. That's not going to be easy with the cap issues and Dez and Murray up for extensions.

So my statement is true, correct?

Not totally because some teams still double teamed him. He was hurt in week 4 of the 2013 season and wasn't very effective after that so some teams didn't feel the need to double team him. When he's healthy he's still a great player but he's clearly not the same player when he's hurt.

One other point about Lee is with his injury history the Cowboys are going to be very careful with him so he doesn't suffer any setbacks. They're not about to put him back on the field unless they feel he's 100% or he may tear up his knee again and his career will be all but over. Lee will be due $2.5 million ('15) and $3 million ('16), with $7 million base salaries from 2017 to '19.

I don't disagree with what you are saying one bit. That is the smart approach. But I have to ask, isn't that what they did last year?

They put escalators into the deal to cover any injury concerns and they weren't met, but please don't act like you knew he was going to miss the entire season when they signed the extension.

At this point and at his salary they have nothing to lose by playing him immediately. So they have no reason to be cautious with Lee. They won't cut him until 2017 at the earliest.

None of us would have imagined he be lost for the season an hour into his first OTA practice but I have posts on the board saying he would end up being injured again immediately after he signed his extension. I said Jerry should have let him play out his contract and see if he could stay healthy before resigning him. He received over 5 million last season not playing a single snap. Jerry could have saved some money because Lee ended up missing 6 games after he signed the contract. If it were me I would have resigned Dez and waited on Lee by doing the opposite it's going to cost Jerry a fortune extending Dez when he could have gotten him cheaper had he extended him first. I don't know all the specifics of Lee's contract but if they throw caution to the wind and throw him on the field and he tears up that knee again he'll be done and they'll be dealing with a good deal of dead money from his contract.
