Sean Lee question

The irony is THEY DID sign him to a huge new contract despite Lee injury concerns.

Not only that, they RUSHED to do it after Lee was just 3 years into his rookie deal that had another year left....

Completely idiocy by the front-office.

His extension hasn't cost the team anything substantial and it gives us the opportunity to have a stud LB if we ever make that Super Bowl run. A few cap dollars is a small price to pay.

Yeah, Lee's contract was specifically set up to account for the chance of injury, iirc.

. A few cap dollars is a small price to pay.

They've paid him roughly $21M so far on the 19 games he's played since he signed that contract before the 2013 season.

Cowboys are paying $17.6M per 16 games played for his efforts.

Not a bad deal for Lee. Hard to say it's been a good deal for the Cowboys.

If his career is over and knowing we didn't win a title with him?

I absolutely don't do it.

Yeah, Lee's contract was specifically set up to account for the chance of injury, iirc.

It was, however, because the Cowboys have been up against the cap they've restructured his deal and converted portions of it to guaranteed money.

They had to do it after the 1st year of his new deal -- a season where his ended up on IR...

It was. His base salary is only 2.5m this year and 3m next year,

He got a 10m signing bonus that was spread over 2013-2017.

One of the top linebackers in the NFL, plus he's got a love and respect for the game that's rarely seen these days. I'd still make the pick again tbh.

Let's say Lee is pretty much done with his career. I'm not saying he is or probably is, just for this hypothetical let's assume the head issue is something he can't play with anymore.

If that's the case, how do you view the use of that 2010 55th overall selection? Was it a good decision? Bad? Would you do it again knowing what you know now?

I will hold off on my own thoughts on this as I know how respected and influential I am around here and I want your honest take on it before I correct it.

Personally knowing what I know now about Lee I would pass but I would have drafted Kuechly instead of Claiborne

That's not how it works. He hasn't had any guaranteed money since last season and has ZERO guaranteed money left. He has some dead cap space left but that is how they do almost everyone.

The only other guy within 10 picks of him who has had a good career is Golden Tate, and we had already picked Bryant in the first

If you want to put your crazy, 1000% hindsight hat on, the 2010 draft redo for rounds #1 and #2 for the Cowboys could have been:
  • 1st Round - Gronk (instead of Dez) -- together with Witten forming the best '12' offense in NFL history. Gronk ended up going in the 2nd round.
  • 2nd Round - Antonio Brown -- Depending who you ask Brown has become the #1 or #2 WR in the NFL. Brown ended up going in the 5th round.
Brown would have replaced all of Dez's yards and then some and Gronk would have added a ton of yards and as many TDs as Dez.

To think that we could have had Ben Tate or Charles Brown instead.......oh wait we have Brown for almost nothing and had a free look at Tate and passed.

Looking back works both ways.

I would rather have the games from Lee we got than see him playing for the Giants or Commanders.

And Greg Hardy went in the 6th round. He would've been in DAL and never got arrested in Charlotte that night.

It was a great pick and I would do it again in a heartbeat. No one can predict which players will have concussion issues.

I would too.....regardless

ThIs wasn't a Sam Bowie vs Jordan decision folks

Got a smart guy, probably be a Cowboy for life

Injury side sucks..... But we've had so many bad picks

There ARE way WORSE picks we've made

Looks like Crawford is the latest to exploit that idiocy.

So in hindsight, knowing what we now know about the 2010 draft and knowing what we now know about Sean Lee's injury history, you'd still take Sean Lee over the following guys?
  • Antonio Brown
  • Jimmy Graham
  • Greg Hardy
  • Golden Tate
  • NaVorro Bowman
  • Geno Adkins
  • Kam Chancellor
  • Everson Griffith
  • Brandon Spikes
:)
