This offseason was a start. Shedding all of our VERY average vets needed to be done. However, this remains one of the worst secondaries in football and much more Work is needed. This is what I would do next offseason.

CUT:
Carroll. Nothing more needs to be said here
OSCan. If not for Dez he would be the most overrated player on this roster. Just go back and watch Kuiper abuse him all game long.
Frazier. Dude should be pumping gas. Has no business getting NFL snaps.

MOVES:
Jones. Move from safety to corner. He just doesn’t have the instincts to play deep
Awuzie. Move from corner to safety
Heath. To the bench
Woods. Into the starting lineup

I would also look to bring in fairly high priced free agent and spend another top three pick in the secondary

Who do you have in mind as a highly paid free agent? I mean, tons of average/above average guys get top dollar, depending on the quantity of "quality" players at their spot.
Corner or safety? Trumaine Johnson is probably the best corner on the market, potentially in 2018. Then you got Vontae Davis who isn't the same corner he was 2-3 years ago and some 30+ year old corners. Oh and Mo Claiborne.
Morgan Burnett will be a FA, but will also be 29, going for his 3rd contract

Not on board moving Awuzie till I see more of him at corner. May be exactly what Rod wants there or not.

I read somewhere that both Claiborne and Carr are amongst the best corners in the league. Which tells me there's something wrong with the water down in Texas or Ron. Marinelli's defense is complete garbage.

It's pretty simple. They are man corners .. they were asked to play more zone here. They leave, go play man and are excelling

Honestly........... I love everything about this except the Awuzie move. I think he's going to be a really good CB.

Jones takes Scandrick's place. Jones, Awuzie and Lewis give you a really nice 3 CB rotation IMO. Go sign a legit SS in free agency this offseason, Woods plays FS.

Generally I like you idea.
I question the move of Jones to corner. The staff tried that Jones rookie season and sent him to safety.

I think the plan all along was make him a FS.

And if you watch Jones play now, it's clear he's best when he's locked up in coverage on a TE or big WR or even RB. He's not a FS. Not a good enough tackler, he's not a ballhawk back there. Takes bad angles when he's playing deep safety, etc.

He's a CB.

Mo Claibornes worst issue here was his ability to stay healthy. We never really had a long period of time to see what a healthy Mo could be.
Can't say the same for Carr, but I'm not too worried about losing Mo.

People complaining about Jones I think don't really understand safety play.

I agree. I don't think we're going to see a secondary overhaul. What we will eventually see, but I don't know when, is these young players taking over.

Carroll is a transition player. Scandrick is getting near the point where he needs a limited role because of health. Heath is better off in a backup role.

The future IMO looks like Awusie and Lewis as the starting corners and Jones and Woods as the starting safeties. We may need to add a nickel corner in a couple of years, though, when Scandrick and Brown are gone.

I'm not saying Awusie and Lewis will be the starters while Scandrick and Brown are here, but I don't see it taking more than a couple of years for that to change.
