Current secondary players:
Corners
Chidobe Awuzie - No worries here. Will be a solid #2 or #3 CB.
Bene Benwikere - Will be a free agent, move on.
Anthony Brown - I've stated many times he's a PI machine in the making. Still, very affordable so no reason to move on, but should not be starting.
Nolan Carroll - Bad signing from get-go. Team saves $2M in cap room by moving on.
Jourdan Lewis - May be our best guy but just be careful to anoint him. Like Awuzie. I think he's more of a #2 or #3 type CB.
Orlando Scandrick - His play is acceptable, but his age (31 next year) and 2018 cap # ($5,281,021) make him a possible cap casualty.
Safeties
Kavon Frazier - Affordable and can play ST. Is not a potential starter but can be a roster guy.
Jeff Heath - Awful. Always has been, always will be.
Byron Jones - It's probably time to move back to CB.
Xavier Woods - Potential is there but team should avoid their constant mistake of just handing jobs over to players who show flashes.
The problem is that four of our better secondary players (Scandrick, Lewis, Awuzie, and Byron Jones) are all suited for that slot CB position. We don't have a guy on the roster who can go toe-to-toe with elite WRs in the league. Look at our first 4 games. Dez has faced Janoris Jenkins, Aqib Talib, Patrick Peterson, and Trumaine Johnson. He also has a rematch with Jenkins and two games against Josh Norman. Who do we have that's comparable?
Free agency offers very little next year. Trumaine Johnson is a free agent but he's coming off back-to-back Franchise Tags and won't be cheap. Xavier Rhodes would have a been a great target, but Minnesota wisely re-signed him before he hit the open market. Some possible targets could be:
Vontae Davis/Colts -will be 30 next year
Malcolm Butler/Patriots - will be 28 and is expecting a huge payday.
Kyle Fuller/Bears - only 26 next year. He showed a ton of promise as a rookie but has been inconsistent the past few years. The Bears did not exercise the 5th year option on him.
This doesn't appear to be a great year for CBs in the draft either:
Tavarius McFadden/Florida State - The closest thing to a sure thing, will probably go top 10.
Jaire Alexander/Louisville - Sometimes he looks lights-out but the last few years, Louisville DBs haven't shown much when they get to the league.
Anthony Averett/Alabama - Seems to be rising up the rankings, need to see more.
Adonis Alexander/Virginia Tech - Great size, questions about his speed. Some project him as a safety.
Kevin Tolliver/LSU - Might have discipline issues. If true, avoid.
P. J. Locke III/Texas - A guy I really like but, like the guys we have, his best position is slot CB.
Iman Marshall/USC - I'm a USC homer so I've seen him a lot. Very inconsistent.
Jordan Thomas/Oklahoma - Injured, out for the year.
Tony Brown/Alabama - Blazing fast but technique is shaky.
