Sometimes I really just don't understand football fans. We had the #2 ranked Defense in terms of scoring. We had to have been doing something right. That includes our Safeties and one of them played much of the year with a cast on one hand.

Yet people honestly want to change both of them in one off season?

I would really like to see one instance of this happening for any team that someone can show me and it propelled them to greatness. Is it too much to ask for even one example?

More likely you are going to find that it has led to disaster for that team. Why? Because there is no chemistry.

I would like to add more INTs too. Only an idiot wouldn't. But that isn't going to happen if we play 2010 with 2 new people back there and one of them is a rookie. No way, no shape, no how. That is ridiculous.

I get frustration. But does being frustrated mean you have to lose all common sense?

We weren't 2nd in the league in defense because of Sensabaugh and Hamlin.

I can't prove that, I just highly doubt it.

I credit our front 7 and Newman and Jenkins for all the heavy lifting.

Archer spoke to Sensabaugh's agent and he isn't planning any visits.

He has had some interest from other teams, but nothing set up yet.

I didn't say we were either. I said we had to be doing something right. If we change those 2 spots we will go backwards. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. One I can see. Both is pure goofy.

Not surprising news given the OP.

The analogy is imperfect, but the Niners won their first championship with two rookies starting in the secondary (Lott and Wright). No one here is suggesting anything quite that drastic for the Boys.

You might want to read the thread again and pay closer attention. I saw at least 3 posters who want a rookie and Atogwe.

Ronnie Lott was the greatest Safety of all time. Wright played CB, not Safety. In actuality, in 1981 so did Lott. Their starting Safeties in 1981 were Dwight Hicks and Carlton Williamson. So this doesn't fit the model even remotely close.

Oh and by the way, do you see the date of that post where I said Newman should be released? It happened to be on December 13th, 2009. Do you know what game occured on that day? The SAN DIEGO game where Newman gave up that huge 3rd down play to Jackson which lead to the game-winning touchdown for San Diego. So I'm 110% positive that post came out of frustration because we were on a two-game losing streak when almost EVERYONE thought the season was over. Nice find, but you have to consider the circumstances also. :p:

If you know what Cover 2 is, you'll know why that play happened.

Norv Turner had an excellent play call against our set defense. Newman and Sensabaugh were playing a Cover 2 scheme. Newman's job is to cover the flats and let the WR have the sideline - Sensabaugh's job is to cover that WR over the top.

Unfortunately on that play, we guessed wrong. Both WRs released vertical - the slot man up the seam and Vincent Jackson up the sideline. We also blitzed, leaving nobody to cover up the seam. Sensabaugh had to cover one guy and try to make a play on the other - since the sideline is your 12th defender, he covered the seam man for as long as possible before having to make a play on Jackson.

Does it look bad to the average guy? Sure. I've been a part of quite a few of those kinds of games playing CB and FS where sometimes the called defense just doesn't work. It's like the offense calls rock to your scissors - sometimes you just get beat.

This is all I'm against. That and the apparent attitude that Ken Hamlin is the worst safety in the NFL.

I wouldn't be that upset if we lost him for a second rounder. I like his tackling but he has poor ball instincts and isn't very good at covering TEs.

How quickly people forget Roy Williams.

Isn't it Newman's responsibility to make sure Jackson does not get a free release if he runs a vertical route like that? Because we were literally a half a second away from sacking Rivers on that play, but Jackson had a free release so that's why he was able to get the ball off just in time. That play should never happen on 3rd and long in the NFL.

He isn't the worst safety, but he is definitely average & if you have the opportunity to get better at that position then you need to go for it & be solid at every position.
