I'm 34 so while I was technically alive during some of the glory years of the 90s I never really got to enjoy those years as I barely knew what was going on.
My first real experience of actually following the team were the 96 season with vivid memories of that playoff loss to Carolina. Things really didn't get better from there lol. 1997 happened and that offseason I was a true diehard for both the Cowboys and football in general. Was up early every Sunday morning to catch the earliest pregame show I could find, didnt miss a game (cowboys or not), and knew every player on the depth chart by heart. Mix that in with some iconic moments like the 99 opener and I was hooked for life.
At this point I've lived through the fall of the triplets....the Quincy Carter/Huchinson/Henson era after believing they were all destined to be hall of famers at one point...the constant 5-11 seasons of Dave Campo including getting upset by the expansion Texans....the washed up QB stints of Bledsoe & Testeverde....the ups and downs of Tony Romo, etc.
Sometimes i wonder why I'm still around, especially given that the Cowboys aren't my local team. I even wanted to flip teams years ago when they signed Greg Hardy, but still couldnt do it. I believe true fandom can't be changed and those who do swap teams, especially later in life will never find the same satisfaction when their team does make it to the top. Even though I grew up through years of disappointment I grew up idolizing this team and the players that took the field, not just the starts either. It was Dan Campbell rallying the team during an upset in a bad year. It was racking up the wins over Washington no matter how bad the Cowboys were. It was being excited for months after they drafted Julius Jones of all people just to see him take the field in a Cowboy uniform. It was being floored by the idea the Cowboys just landed a Joey Galloway or a La'roi Glover. No matter what I bought in year after year after year not just with excitement but the certainty that it was OUR year.
Anymore I still get just as excited...just for different reasons. I don't fall in love with players. I'm way more level headed watching each week. I find joy in the little things like being able to call out the coverages a defense is in, and playing along with the schematics. I enjoy going back and watching old games over the offseason. It's for different reasons in the past, but i'm still a die hard. I've lived through so much disappointment that I'm mostly numb to it.....but with that said being a front runner and moving to root for a team like KC at this point wouldnt be nearly as satisfying as it will be when the Cowboys get back to a title game, even if that is another decade away.
