Should Marion Barber be our feature back? *MERGE*

Some of the or I may say a lot of the Marion Barber fans are getting preety rediculous. This is why some of you will bash Julius and what not and then you say that Dallas should start Barber because you know he is going to be the next great Dallas running back (which I totally disagree) or the better runner. So how is your observation over a NFL legendary coach? Bill already said that Julius is the starter and Barber to be the back up, and everyone should know that Bill is a hard nose guy who will start the best person. There is a reason why Bill is starting Julius and thats because he thinks Julius is going to do better on the 1st and 2nd downs and Barber with his good catching ability to be the reliever and third down plays. I think that Bill knows more what goes on during games, I mean he studies every game. Some of you try to start a controversy but there really is not. If anything we should be glad that we have two good backs. But hey what does Parcells knows he just takes several teams to the playoff or the superbowl? I think that this year Julius will break out. The last two years has been just, in Parcells words, unfortunate bad luck. Judge a player in his third year is another thing Parcells said. This is just my opinion what do you think?

The only thing this proves is that Bill PArcells doesnt trust Julius Jones in certain situations. He had all the trust in the world last year but he let us down, now Barber is starting to grow ON BP and it's showing. BP will go with the hot hand, this is how this game works.

Believe me as long as MArion is on this team their will never be a Featured Back in Dallas. Everyone know this, Our Running game is called the MArion/JUlius Show...LIve with it. it's not going to change.

Two things:

A) They already merged a bunch of threads for this discussion. There is a reason for this.

B) It is completely alright for you to hit the enter key 2 times between sentences. I quit reading your post after the first sentence.

me too

the first sentence didn't make sense

I don't understand why there is so much discussion on this. Julius will go on first and second down because he is faster and more elusive, and therefore the bigger threat to make a big play. Barber will play on Third down and probably short yardage situations because he is the more powerful runner and the better receiver.

Julius will likely be considered the "feature" back because his main purpose will be to RUN the football. He has a chance to have some very good games and a very good year if he stays healthy. Barber will be considered the "backup" though his roll will be much bigger and much more important than that of just a backup. More accurately; Tyson Thompson will be the backup because he will only get garbage time carries if he gets on the field with the offense at all.

We want football.
Might I just add uh huh, amen, and hallelujah.

I expect Jones to continue as the starter but I admit I would love to see both backs over 1,000 yards this season

when was the last time that happened?

I recall Franco Harris and Rocky Blier doing it -- but was there a more recent pair?

The only way this happens realisitically is if Julies breaks off 3-4 150 yardish games early but then misses 4 or 5 games.

It has only been done twice. Harris and Bleier in 1976 (as you mentioned) and Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris with the Dolphins in 1972.

I believe the only RBs to have 1000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season are Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk. I do think Tomlinson could do ti with the right season.

I admit I don't remember the last time, I know some teams have come close to having 2 backs hit the 1,000 yard rushing mark in a single season. I do know we are talking an averge of 62.5 yards a game for any back to reach the 1,000 yard mark.

Actually this year might be LT's best shot at that -- with Rivers playing QB there will probably be a ton of short passes etc. called. Plus it looks like LT isn't going to get any preseason action -- seems like Chargers are saving him for some serious work. He'll likely crack 75 catches -- but he'd need a handful of 100+ yard receiving days to get that done.

People want JJ or MB to be the next Smith ...... not gonna happen.

Both are good at certain things ..... neither hold a candle to Emmitt.

There will never be another Emmitt Smith folks ........ get over it.

As a duo they can give us a very good running game ..... but neither will ever be a franchise back in the mode of # 22 .....

Most recent time 2 backs hit over 1,000 yard on the same team.
1985
Browns captured their third Central Division championship, but lost to Dolphins, 24-21, in Miami. Rookie Kevin Mack (1,104) and Earnest Byner (1,002) each gained 1,000 yards rushing. It marked the third time in 66-year history of NFL that teammates both rushed for over 1,000 yards in the same season.

Hey I know it is a long shot for both of our backs to reach the 1,000 yard mark but it can be done.

Any idea how many carries that took? I could see it going either way this year, with our run game. Either we keep these monster, 7 minute drives going all through the season, or our offensive playmakers have bomb years. For some reason I just see us being pass-dominant this year.

Unless we just roll 30 on everyone in the first half. :D

I'm checking on that as well as what the overall run to pass ratio. once I find the info I'll let you know. :D

I know where you are coming from, but someday there will be a better back than ES.

224 carries Byner, 222 carries Mack. Passing Gary Danielson 163 passes for 1,274 and Kosar passed 248 for 1,578

Heh. Maybe we only throw 400 passes this year. But I don't think that's logical, considering where our strengths lie. It would be foolish not to take advantage of the outstanding talent we have in pass receivers.

Then again, if our defense is dominant, we could be seeing close to a thousand offensive plays anyhow. Maybe that's overly optimistic, sorry, but I'm a little geeked up about their performance thus far. ;)

We all know that if we are leading in the 2nd half, we will run more than pass.

It's a Parcells-ism

Depends on how the running game goes. If a team is very good at running the ball it actually creates bigger plays down field when you do put the ball up. I relize the feat of 2 backs hitting the 1,000 yard mark is very unlikely and has only been done 3 times in NFL history but I do think both of our backs are capiable of rushing for over 1,000 yards maybe not in the same season but I think both have the ability to be good backs in this league. I guess I'm not part of the crowd who thinks Barber is nothing more than a backup runner in this league.
