Should Orton fill in as starter for Dallas

I don't think he was hurt enough to affect the game.He made some good plays. He had no help (bad run blocking, stupid penalties, dropped balls). Orton would have fared no better. That's my opinion. A QBs BFF is a run game. Cest le vie.... If we don't start running the ball this season we are screwed. Period.

He was showing some form of degradation and short arming throws in the 2nd half, an above average backup like Orton might have won us the game at that point. It's stupid to suggest otherwise. Hopefully, Tony will be better next week having not sustained too many hits this Sunday, he is our franchise for quite some time.

It was only a matter of time before this thread cropped up. At least the OP is making a case based on a possible injury rather than arguing that Orton is better than Romo. Then again, we are playing the Rams next week right? maybe Romo should take a week off. I mean, its the Rams dude!

lol... remember '08 when we played the lowly Rams? you were probably being sarcastic though... right?

I'm starting to wonder if Romo will ever be fully 100% again at his age and injury history as well as the Cowboys' inconsistent offensive line play every year leaving him one kill shot away. No amount of time off will help.

If the Cowboys drop one to the Rams next week, I would seriously consider giving Lovie Smith/Jon Gruden/Bill Cowher a call.

The way this teams looked the last 2 weeks the playoffs are hard to see! They need a big turn around to see 8-8. I see what your saying though about a hurt Romo. But he will play regardless.

Two things here.

Romo dud hit Dez for the blitz beating game changing play, he dropped the ball.

Second, Dez took himself out for about 90% of that last drive we kicked the fg on....and after the game we found out it was because his back was stiff and he couldn't move well.

Romo and Dez were just not themselves in the fourth qtr, it's not a normal thing and I imagine they both play well next week.

How can I put this nicely. I'm going to try my best to be as nice as possible here. That drop, as you keep harping on, happened with 9 minutes to go in the game with us trailing 13 to 17. We had nine minutes to at least score a TD after that one drop. Are you trying to tell me that this one drop made the difference? Cause if you are, then let's go to the million mistakes Romo made in the ENTIRE game that cost us the game. Being protective of Tony when he plays bad makes his lovers come off as, well, you fill in the blanks. The very next play Romo throws the ball out of bounds, not even giving Witten a chance for the 1st down.

The bottom line is, after that drop, Tony had 6:43 seconds to put us into the end zone. He threw a pass behind Miles Austin who had to contort in order to catch the ball, should've been incomplete.
He threw an interception right to Berry, thank goodness a horrible holding call gave him the ball back. Only to turn around and throw another 2 yard pass to Witten which should've been intercepted again.
Followed by a HORRIBLE pass to Miles Austin that was way too wide. He had ZERO pressure in his face on those plays.
Next play there was an overload blitz with Dez in one on one coverage, didn't even look his way. Throws another 2 yard bail out pass to Witten which was way off.

Had Romo made any plays after that drop, we still had a chance to win. But he was absolutely horrible coming down the stretch. I won't blame him for this foolishness but throwing a screen with 16 seconds left is beyond ignorant. It's a give up play. I won't fan the flames by going through the entire game, so I'll just leave it at this.

I *never* agree with your QB takes, Clove, but this one is pretty close to accurate. Those last two series were brutal. And, if Romo was that hurt, he shouldn't have been in the game. If he wasn't hurt, I don't know what he was doing, because the passes were bizarre, and bizarrely off-target. And it came after a couple of series of being really smart and accurate with the ball, too. It was strange.

It's a long season. Get him healthy. I say Orton now to say Romo later.

That guy who was throwing passes today for the Dallas Cowboys...that guy wasn't Tony Romo. Not even close. Sit him until he is 85% of himself.

I have said all along something was wrong with him after the scramble. He was Inaccurate throwing left. And Dez wasn't right either on those final two drives with his back issue.

Ad he didn't call the screen play that was called from the sideline.

Trying to paint a picture that he was bad all day, well good for you.

You hate the guy and hope for failure so you can bag on him. I am sure you are giddy today along with the rest of them, so congratulations we lost and you get to gloat. Have a good time.

And spare me the I won't fan the flames and get into the rest of it, you are not going to tell me anything I don't know about the game, trust me.

It seems ROMO ribs are affecting his play.....I've read numerous reports that state he has to taken pain killing injections before the game just to play. I don't like the idea of playing ROMO hurt and losing.. I'd rather give Kyle ORTON a chance...and see what he can do. A healthy Orton is better than playing ROMO hurt.

ROMO needs to get healthy and take the Cowboys deep into the playoffs and he wont get healthy if he keeps getting hit. What happens when ROMO get hit in the RIBs again, what happens if his performance don't get any better....or even gets worse.. Kyle ORTON could play descent for a few games and give ROMO some time to heal. Not sure how long it takes for a RIB injury to heal but getting beat up on the 1st game of the season is gonna make a long season for ROMO. Not sure ROMO can last 14 more games with bad ribs....teams will be looking to smack him around.... At least it is time to start getting ORTON some reps in practice.

You have a point. If Romo can't throw deep or even throw short passes accurately then Orton should play.

Really? I know Romo didn't play a great game but if Dez catches that long pass in 4th Q that hit him the hands he's still running (TD)....we probably win. Or Carter ctaches that INT before half it would have been a pick 6. Or Dunbar doesn't fumble after getting a 1st in Chief's territory, or Claiborne doesn't get a PI on Chiefs on last drive at least we get ball back and have a chance.

Point is, it's a team sport and Romo was not the reason we lost.

You make come good points that it is a team game. I'm not bagging on Romo other than the goaline throw to TWill rather than Dez. That one ridiculous decision could have us the game which, in my opinion, is the reason he is paid $108 million. So in that aspect he is A reason we lost. The biggest reason, however as others have posted, is that our play design is extremely simple to defend: Double Dez with over under and buzz a linebacker under if you have to, put your best cover corner on miles and contain him, play 5 or 6 in the box because Murray will find you, leave Witten open and then run to tackle him after a whopping 2 yard reception, and then single any other receiver we have because they can't beat 1vs1. Did I forget anything or is anything untrue?

Obviously, no.

But, just as obviously, if the guy's in the lineup, then his ribs are not an excuse for problems with his play.

wow. just wow. So hurting and unable to be fully flexible and so on is not going to affect his play?

Orton?

We might as well just line up and play for the number 1 pick

There is no obvious to it Idgit "Mr. Contradiction". Almost every post you make is contradicting another poster giving the idea you know everything. Well Buddy you don't . Yes, I'm calling you out because you're bad for this forum. No one else like you throws other posters under the bus like you---STOP IT. Stop acting superior to other posters. As they say it's best to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubts. You open your mouth way to often.

I don't care if it is Romo or Orton being under center. All I know is that if the Cowboys can't and/or don't run the football, they will lose many games.

I've seen a different Romo these 2 games, and people are assuming it's because of sore ribs. I think with the negative comments the last 6 years in addition to the $100M contract we might have lost our gunslinger. This is going to be the Romo 2.0 that everyone has wanted, the bus driver, the one that doesn't throw picks in the 4th quarter. Thank you, but I want the guy that can come back down 21 in the fourth as well as throw a last second interception.

This exact thing was said in September of 2009. After the interception and loss to the giants and then a bad game from the team in a win over Carolina.....everyone assumed he was done.

Its week 2, just hang in there.
