Should we be worried about Tyron?

I think everyone now stating that they wanted Watt over Smith should have to link to their original thread. I certainly don't recall all of the Watt love at the time the selections were made. In fact, I recall a lot more people saying they didn't want us using a top 10 pick on a 3-4 DE.

Smith's going to be a good player for us for a very long time.

There were people out there that did not want to draft Smith over a Defensive Player or even another OL. I wanted to draft Aldon Smith or Watt over Smith. If not, then trade down and take Solder or Castonzo later.

Some wanted to take Quinn as well. There were guys who did not want to take Smith over other players.

Yes, just like how we drafted that darn Demarcus Ware to play OLB! What a miscalculation!

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're talking about. Smith is built like a prototypical LT and played quite well last season once he settled into the position.

Yeah, but he never played the position. That makes you wonder why? He was a better athlete then anybody at USC, including Kalil. This is not to say that he may never develop into a decent LT but clearly, the the concerns over the switch from Right to Left have been validated IMO. I, like many, did not see the wisdom of taking a RT that high. If he can make the transition then it's well worth the pick but if he can't, then clearly it's a miss.

I don't get all that worked up reading about Ware abusing him but Kyle Wilber (a backup playing end for the first time) is beating him consistently I worry a lot. To be honest I have expected much more from him. He needs to start shutting people out

Well, the road to the HOF is not perfect.
Give him time.

He was even an "average" tackle as a rookie. He graded out as a top 5 RT.

I've seen a lot of historical revisionism here on CZ regarding Smith's rookie season. He wasn't as good as people have made him out to be which according to many here was borderline All-Pro.

He gave up 8 sacks as a rookie in 2011. Is that considered a "Top 5 in the NFL" performance?

Other sources have credited him 6. Others even fewer, underscoring why sacks allowed is not a great gauge. Pressure rate, however, is a solid metric by which to judge a tackle, and his 2011 pressure rate was 2.5%, which is top 5 worthy. The Cowboys also averaged 5.5 yards running behind Smith in 2011. So yes, he was a Top 5 RT in 2011.

Anyone that thinks Smith was a "Top 5 Tackle" in 2011 is CLEARLY drinking way too much koolaid.

Again, I can't believe I have to explain this -- I'm saying it's too soon to call, not that Smith is currently better.

Even if Tyron turns into a top 5-10 LT, Watt >

He had the most dominating season from an interior DL in NFL History last season.

I agree with Bill Parcels that by a player's 3rd season most of the time you know exactly what you have in them. I think this is a very important season to see what Tyron Smith is.

Since when is DE an interior defensive lineman?

And holy hyperbole. If we judged every player by their 1st two seasons....let's just say we would have gotten a lot of things wrong.

I'm not going to complain about the pick, because I still like it, but Smith gets a pass he doesn't deserve on this board because of his draft status. And our issues in 2012 with the OL get misrepresented as being OG problems when really there were more significant problems at C and RT.

You do know Watt plays in a 3-4, right? 3-4 DE =/= 4-3 DE. And 12 of Watt's sacks came as a DT in a 4-3.

And my last statement in my previous post wasn't hyperbole, it's a fact.

I am worried about Tyron at left tackle. I believe he was great at right tackle but I'm concerned about his play on the left side.

I couldn't care less how well a player does in his second season when judging his career ( which is something I can't do yet). It's hilarious how fast modern fans are to damn or crown a player.

my concern for tyron is that he was always a right tackle and he run blocks better than pass blocks.
plus his results have been middling thus far over 2 plus years.

he may need to move back to right tackle at some point.
not the end of the world but would be a fairly bad draft selection at 10 if a long-term RT is what he is.

if smith has another bad season i'd expect us to draft a LT in r1 and move tyron.
