Should we be worried about Tyron?

I think everyone now stating that they wanted Watt over Smith should have to link to their original thread. I certainly don't recall all of the Watt love at the time the selections were made. In fact, I recall a lot more people saying they didn't want us using a top 10 pick on a 3-4 DE.

Smith's going to be a good player for us for a very long time.

Honestly....I was one of those guys that wanted Watt. I was a big believer in the guy. But I was not unhappy with the Smith pick. Now, Smith is a Cowboy. Watt is not.

I like Smith better because of that fact. I don't care about being right or wrong....like so many are on here.

No, there was not a ton of Watt love in here... those of us that wanted him got hammered by the Cam Jordan/Nick Fairley supporters.

I definitely wanted him that year, made a long post trying to hype him up and constantly defended him leading up to the draft.

To be fair, you have not defined your expectations, nor have you provided any fact or statistics to support your claims. You know your position is a stretch when your only support is a player's performance in a drill you did not personally witness.

How about pressure rates among Left Tackles for the 2012 season?

1. Joe Thomas, Browns (28): 3 sacks allowed, 1.6 percent pressure rate
2. Andrew Whitworth, Bengals (31): 5 sacks allowed, 1.7 percent pressure rate
3. Duane Brown, Texans (28): 4 sacks allowed, 2.0 percent pressure rate
4. Ryan Clady, Broncos (27): 1 sack allowed, 2.3 percent pressure rate
5. Jake Long, Rams (28): 4 sacks allowed, 2.4 percent pressure rate
6. Rodger Saffold, Rams (25): 2 sacks allowed, 2.4 percent pressure rate
7. Michael Roos, Titans (30): 4 sacks allowed, 2.6 percent pressure rate
8. Russell Okung, Seahawks (25): 1 sack allowed, 2.7 percent pressure rate
9. Branden Albert, Chiefs (28): 1 sack allowed, 3.0 percent pressure rate
10. D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Jets (29): 2 sacks allowed, 3.2 percent pressure rate
11. Eugene Monroe, Jaguars (26): 5 sacks allowed, 3.2 percent pressure rate
12. Joe Staley, 49ers (29): 8 sacks allowed, 3.3 percent pressure rate
13. Matt Kalil, Vikings (24): 2 sacks allowed, 3.3 percent pressure rate
14. Trent Williams, Commanders (25): 4 sacks allowed, 3.6 percent pressure rate
15. Jared Veldheer, Raiders (26): 5 sacks allowed, 3.6 percent pressure rate
16. William Beatty, Giants (28): 3 sacks allowed, 3.9 percent pressure rate
17. Nate Solder, Patriots (25): 4 sacks allowed, 3.9 percent pressure rate
18. Jordan Gross, Panthers (33): 7 sacks allowed, 3.9 percent pressure rate
19. Sam Baker, Falcons (28): 6 sacks allowed, 4.5 percent pressure rate
20. Anthony Castonzo, Colts (25): 9 sacks allowed, 4.7 percent pressure rate

*Only had access to the top 20*

Tyron Smith, Cowboys (22): 3 sacks allowed, 6.0 percent pressure rate

You know what Doug Free's pressure rate was last year? Yup, 6.0 percent pressure rate... same as Tyron's.

So let's stop crowning the guy, he didn't play anywhere near a top 5 or top 10 LT last season. He's young so there's reason for optimism, but like I said originally he has a longggg way to go.

In the last eight games, his pressure rate was 3% and he didn't give up a single sack...so yeah, thank you for proving my point.

link?

and that's pretty solid if true, but the season is 16 games, not 8. You agree that allowing the same amount of pressures as Doug Free last year is not a good look for Tyron, no?

Tyron plays against the elite pass rushers in the game. Free did not and was in a rotation with another player. Tyron is 22. He is 24 days older than Eric Fisher.

I sometimes don't even know how to respond to some of you. I bet some of you start hyperventilating anytime the gas light comes on in the car. Talk about premature worrying.

My point was that just saying, "X s better than Y, so we should have drafted X" is too limited of an analysis. You have to take into account position value, and regardless, it's too early to make a call. For example, if Smith develops into a Top 5 LT, then I think he was a better pick than Watt considering the value of his position.

Even if you believe LT is more important than DE, Watt >>>>>>>>> Tyron.

It's not even debatable who the better pick would've been. Watt is a once in a generation type talent.

Again, I can't believe I have to explain this -- I'm saying it's too soon to call, not that Smith is currently better.

While we can debate about how good T. Smith was in 2012... whether we'll see the T. Smith of the 1st 8 games where he ranked in the bottom half of NFL Left Tackles or the T. Smith of the 2nd 8 games where he was was top 15 or so..... we'll find out definitively (I believe) this season. He'll be facing a pretty steady onslaught of top tier pass rushers including:

Von Miller
Brian Orakapo (twice)
Tamba Hali
Jared Allen
JPP (twice)
Clay Matthews
Julius Peppers

That's 9 out of 16 games right there.

This is a good point. Personally, I think Smith will elevate his game to being a Top 10 (or near) this season, will continue to progress and will play his entire second contract as a Top 5 LT. If that happens, then Smith was a fantastic pick, regardless of who was picked after him.

the guy was playing LT for the first time since... high school? i think giving him a 8 games to adjust is fair.

It's still July. Remind me of this at the end of August and if it's still an issue then I might worry a little.

Some tough judging going on. First year at the position, he struggled some early and then second half was exceptional. No sacks. Low pressure rate. Expectations around here are ludicrous.

I thought when I read the thread the regret would be from moving a productive RT to LT - instead it is "we shoulda drafted".

Guess what - anyone saying "we shoulda drafted" needs to hurry and finish the time machine they are working on so we can go correct the problem. Until then, your take is lame. I'd wager 95% of draft picks are, in hindsight, out of order, meaning someone "shoulda drafted" someone else.

Now to Tyron - I still hate the fact we are trying to hammer a outstanding square peg into a round hole. Maybe he gets there some day, but as of now, I evaluate this as a misallocation of resources.

Yes, just like how we drafted that darn Demarcus Ware to play OLB! What a miscalculation!

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're talking about. Smith is built like a prototypical LT and played quite well last season once he settled into the position.

I wouldn't worry as he's probably out of a shape a little. He has nothing to prove as he's entrenched at his position. He'll be ready by week 1.
