Should we be worried about Tyron?

I stated a few months ago I haven't been overly impressed with Tyron. I was expecting a little more than what we've gotten from him so far being a top 10 pick. As a rookie he looked promising at RT but struggled a good portion of last season at LT. He gave up several sacks and had a number of penalties he was part of the problem upfront. It's still early but he has to start stepping up or he's going to end up a disappointment.

The Cowboys took him ahead of JJ Watt who's developed into arguably the most dominate defensive player in the game today. I wanted Watt at the time and the Cowboys could have traded down and got him. Wanting Watt and seeing the great player he's developed into has made my expectations of Tyron even higher. I'm not so sure he's going to live up to them.

I'm sorry, but it's completely and utterly unreasonable to modify you expectations about a player because another player drafte later is performing well. Why don't you compare Smith's play to Fairley's or Quinn's?

If you read my post my expectations of Tyron are based on his top 10 draft status along with how well Watt has performed. When a player is a top 10 pick that automatically puts high expectations on them. Fairly and Quinn weren't players I wanted and Watt was which is why I'm making the comparison. Watt was on the Cowboys radar so it's going to sting even more watching him dominate if Tyron doesn't develop into a great player especially on the OL where the Cowboys need a great player.

Remember the Ware-Merriman threads?

SPOILER: Everyone lost their mind 1-2 years in and lamented not choosing Merriman over Ware. Turns out Merriman was on mad PEDs and Ware is a first ballot HOFer.

I read everything you wrote and it's all unreasonable. Smith graded out as a top 5 RT in 2011 and performed like a top 10 LT the last eight games of 2012 (no sacks, ~3% pressure rate, etc.). That is excellent production thus far for a top 10 pick, and how other picks have played is completely irrelevant.

If you read everything I wrote you can see a lot of my expectations are due to where he was taken in the draft. It's unreasonable for me to expect a little more from a top 10 pick than what we've gotten so far? Will you be satisfied if this is as good as he'll ever be? He's entering his 3rd year and we're now hearing reports he's being abused by Kyle Wilber in camp. Reports had it that Rob Ryan pleaded with the Cowboys to take JJ Watt in 2011 and his brother Rex confirmed it. Naturally Ryan being a defensive coach would want a defensive player and that it was no knock on Tyron but it does show Watt was more on the Cowboys radar than Fairley or Quinn.

and honestly part of the reason he didn't grade out as well in the first 8 was that no one on the line had any freaking idea when the ball would be snapped. There was something clearly wrong with the Cook-Romo communication

There was a play where Tyron Smith was beatten for a sack by DeMarcus Ware to end a drive but from my spot in Jones Tower, I liked what I saw from Smith today. I thought he did a much better job of taking the fight to Ware who on several reps this week, had his number. This scrimmage was more of what I expected from Smith in regards of blocking in this zone scheme off the edge but handling a big time rusher like Ware. You have heard me say this a much but when Smith has trouble, it’s usually with quickness inside which is one of Ware’s strengths but today, Smith slammed the door on him with some nice power, with a hard step inside. Smith also was able to get some quality movement when they went to the team run period on Ware which allowed Murray to skate the edge. Overall for Smith, he was the type of player in this practice that I belived that we all envisioned him to be. The sack from Ware was a nice play by him, so you tip your cap but when Tyron Smith needed to get the job done today, he was able to close the deal.

Has Smith been bad?? I thought he has been pretty good his first 2 years especially considering the swap to LT.... He is only going to get better and from what I've read he is doing well now.... So NO I'm not concerned

Yes it is unreasonable. Smith was graded a top 10 LT his last 8 games, that's what I would expect from a top 10 draft pick.

Kyle Wilber "abused" Smith in a drill that heavily favors the defense, maybe you should look on the other side of that coin and think maybe Wilbur is going to be a player.

Wilber is a 4th round draft pick entering his second season if he turns into a "player" it's a bonus but I'm more concerned with Tyron who's entering his third season being the "player" he was expected to be due his top 10 draft status. My expectations for a top 10 pick are much higher than for a player who was drafted in the 4th round. Sorry if you view my expectations as being unreasonable but I have standards and if the players and the team aren't able to achieve a certain standard the Cowboys will continue being a mediocre team.

To be fair, you have not defined your expectations, nor have you provided any fact or statistics to support your claims. You know your position is a stretch when your only support is a player's performance in a drill you did not personally witness.

My expectations are for him to become All Pro and at the very least a Pro Bowl player. No I haven't witnessed his performances in drills I'm doing what we're all doing going off reports from those who have witnessed them. We're only having this discussion due to a report that he got beat twice by a 4th round pick. My claims are he's been okay and the fact that he has yet to be named to the Pro Bowl is proof he hasn't played great.

You could see watching the games last season that he struggled making the transition to LT. It was "reported" he struggled making the transition to LT. I'm still not sold that he's best suited for that position. He became a top 10 pick by playing RT and showed a lot of promise his rookie year at that position. Like I said he's been okay but I expect better. If he never gets better than what he is now will you be satisfied?

This grousing about Watt is spilled milk. If we are going to invest in that type of behavior then lets make a list of all the players Dallas could have had from Montana to Moss to Brady to Scooby Doo.

Then lets also look back at Emmitt, who fell to a spot that Jimmy could not resist. If you remember, Jimmy swore Dallas would take a defensive player that year. Jimmy had his eye on James Francis, the linebacker taken by the Bengals. Some have suggested it was Ray Agnew, but they are wrong.

Jimmy never thought Emmitt would get past the first six or seven picks. When he started falling and Francis was taken, Jimmy made the move to go get him.

Think this conversation is played out on EVERY board who picked in the first sixteen slots and the Packers or Stealers who wanted Emmitt and picked within four slots behind Dallas?

You betcha.

As far as Smith goes, the position of LT is not sexy. The kid has a family that are a bunch of POS and that may play into this as well.

But he belongs to Dallas and he has played pretty well so far. He has been worth the first and unless you want this to devolve into a fun-filled complaint thread - and I can definitely post the missed opportunities this team has made during the draft and T Smith ain't one of them - then maybe we should play the hand dealt.

Everyone says Spencer is all that and a bag of Funyuns. So as Hillary lamely said, "What difference does it make?"

Nice post TD.

I still can't understand why so many posters play this could'a, should'a, would'a game. Smith is a Cowboy....Watt is not....We're not the only team to pass on the guy. We've made terrific picks the past few years. We've made some stinkers. Smith is a pick much like Claiborne. We need to wait an be patient.

I still remember folks throwing their arms up about Ware being chosen over Merriman. Merriman was tearing it up the first few years....Ware was solid...but wow...were we right about him.

People need to wait a few years to see what happens. But even then, what good does it do? Cheer for the Cowboys!!! That's what we need to focus on!

I don't get all that worked up reading about Ware abusing him but Kyle Wilber (a backup playing end for the first time) is beating him consistently I worry a lot. To be honest I have expected much more from him. He needs to start shutting people out

Maybe Jerry should have left him at right tackle, and Free at left tackle where each one plays better and is more natural
