Should we cut Larry Allen?

Who cares how much he makes? It's not like he's taking up money that we would be using on other players. As it is, with Allen on the books, we have enough to sign just about anyone we want anyways.

Let's see... the biggest problem we had ALL SEASON was the play of our offensive line.

So the solution is to cut the ONLY ONE THAT PLAYED ABOVE AVERAGE?

I have been a big supporter of Allen and I can't even say he played average this past season. If you feel he did play average this year do you think his play will not sink futher next year? Dallas is going to have to pay out some big money to Larry should he remain on the roster and I'm just not sure if he is worth it at this point in his career.

No thanks. I have no idea what Peterman can do. I think Larry can still hang around another year or two.

I agree 100%. Larry Allen is not our biggest concern. Replacing him would be. We already need a RT, RG, C, OLB, ILB & FS. Now some of these guys may already be on the roster. Maybe Riveria reverts back to his Pro Bowl form. Maybe Pettie or Columbo steps up at RT. Maybe Berauilt steps up at FS. I don't know for certain, but we can't add any more maybes. Allen at LG is servicable 75% of the time and dominant 25% of the time. I think we have larger concerns. We keep saying you can't fix every problem in one offseason. You sure can't fix every problem if you keep adding to the list.

ya i agree. Larry is the only guy who did much of anything this year.
Tucker, Al J, Rivera Petitti all had bad years. Larry isnt the same but still the best we got (besides Flo).

I think the people who mentioned the fact that there is no solid alternative are right. Maybe we can hope he restructres, but we don't have an answer as far as replacing him goes.

If we find a better option for less money than by all means take that oppurtunity, this is a business.

I can't touch this topic. I'm too much of a Larry Allen homer. I've got Madden Favre/Allen man love for the dude. I hope he plays until the retires a Cowboy. Don't sell Larry short. He's not the same Larry but he's still one of our best linemen.

how would you know if you could get giles before march when his bonus is due.?gonna be hard to restucture his deal with the cba stuff but jerry will work it out. my point is we need to be adding to the oline, not cutiing.larry has another yr or two in him which gives us time to develope his replacement like the kid from usc last night with the funny name that i can't remember but he was mowing people over

True but, we do need to start planning for the future. IMO LA was "solid" this year but not "stellar". We are paying him "stellar" $$ regardless of how much cap space we have.

I am hoping that he is open to coming back at a reduced salary because I seriously doubt any other team is gonna pay him what he is currently scheduled to make next year with us. I would bet that no team would pay him 60% of what he is scheduled to make next year.

:hammer:

We don't need a complete overhaul. I totally agree that we won't be able to fix it by adding to the list.

Here is the list of FA guards from the RedZone:

Player Type 2005 Team
Bob Hallen UFA Chargers
Corey Hulsey UFA Raiders
Fred Weary UFA Texans
Grey Ruegamer UFA Packers
Jonathan Goodwin UFA Jets
Kris Dielman RFA Chargers
Kyle Kosier UFA Lions
Montrae Holland RFA Saints
Ray Brown UFA Commanders
Reggie Wells RFA Cardinals
Scott Kooistra RFA Bengals
Sean Mahan RFA Buccaneers
Stephen Nea UFA Patriots
Steve Hutchinson UFA Seahawks
Terrence Metcalf UFA Bears
Tom Nutten UFA Rams
Toniu Fonoti UFA Vikings
Tutan Reyes UFA Panthers
Tyrone Hopson UFA Lions
Vince Manuwai RFA Jaguars

Yeah ok, there doesn't seem to be much to get excited about here. I see a couple of guys with Hutchinson being the top one but, I would be surprised if Seattle let him walk.

I would still like to get Fonoti in here. If we get him and can get him into shape he still has the potential to be a star.

Allen's cap number for 2006 is $7,558,333. If we cut him before his roster bonus is due (April 1), he would count $4,116,668 against the cap, a savings of $3,441,665.

So the question is can we find a guard better then Larry Allen for 3.4 million dollars?

Probably not.

I hate to say it but when talking that kind of money he either restructures and tries to go another year or Dallas parts way. As I said before I like Larry and defended him in past years when others gave up on him but Larry’s play is not going to get any better and it was not that great this year. He still gives a good initial pop when he comes out of his stance but after that I'm just not seeing much. He is not maintaining the block.

Toniu Fonoti will cost a lot less than that, and he is still young, and could take over for big larry when he is done.
