We should be ready for a mass exodus of players after this year, just like after 2014.

How many of these guys do you see being resigned all in one offseason?

Leary
Williams
T. McClain
Butler
Claiborne
Carr
Church
Wilcox
Durant
McFadden
J. Crawford
Dunbar
Escobar
Davis
Gachkar, Moore, Sanchez, etc.

Free is likely a cap casualty. No telling what's going to happen with Romo or even Witten, either.

It's not what I am looking for. It's what the Cowboys are looking for.

Well maybe measurable was a bad word to use because the guy has prototypical measurables for that position.

The reason he isn't what they are looking for probably has more to do with their financial commitment to Doug Free more than anything else.

Those are the only "must sign" free agents. As them leaving open more holes than we could fill in one offseason, with all the other holes on D we have, and being this close to being a true contender.

But point made, CS :) ETA click to see highlighted if you please :)

Controversial question, I know. We have a beast in La'el, but La'el is still raw and Leary is clearly the better of the two right now (just watch @Idgit's Green Bay clip posted in this Zone).

Leary has been a pro bowl level guard in his time here, but because of the splash signing of Collins, and the fact that he plays with Smith, Martin, and TFred, he is often overlooked and brushed aside.

He hits the second level like a boss on run plays and punks DT's in pass-pro.

Due to his knee would it be viable to sign him to a decent contract (around 6-8aav) and keep Collins and push him (Collins) out to RT? Free hasn't been bad, but as @xwalker has said many times, the Oline and coaching staff often have to send coverage over to his side, especially in pass-pro.

This guy isn't a Parnell type, he is actually an incredibly effective guard, every game he plays. Look at how Zeke has performed with this beast back in.

What say you guys? Is it too much cap allocated to one unit, to keep all five? Am I dreaming at the thought of Leary taking a 6-8aav (@bkight13) deal with teams like IND and TEN out there that need Oline?

What do you think, Zoners?
It is too much cap room to devote to the OL.......we have Collins for LG and Green for RT....then we have to extend Martin in 2018

Let him test FA and get the comp pick......he still has time bomb knees

Thanks, B :)

ETA -- @bkight13 what if we could get him for ~4m aav due to his knees? Not happening with teams like IND, JAX, TEN?

Or even if so, still not worth the cap space?

Yes. See my post in the rookie dinner thread. Leary is the nasty in this nasty oline. If you can resign him to a responsible contract, do it. I would hate to see him go to another team and shore up another oline.

I would resign leary and use Collins as trade bait or kick him to RT.

I just think that Leary's number will be near top tier LG he may settle for less but I will bet he will want a ton guaranteed with at least 5 years. While teams wonder about his knee, I bet he is too.

His knee is an issue that should well cause some consideration in a negotiating deal that would allow for something less than a ton of $$.
Hopefully, he's agreeable to being realistic about that fact and willing to submit a reasonable request in terms of his contract expectations.
Of course, I can easily picture a situation where he might be unwilling to settle for less than what is considered standard compensation. In that event, there's a chance he'll be playing for another team when it comes time for something to be settled. It can't always end ideally for any team.

So everyone else was unreasonable? For humoring a complete make-believe scenario?

Don't run off, answer me.

Welk, based on EVERYTHING done in OTA's, training camp & pretty much any given time or opportunity....YES

Collins has lined up at RT during the very 1st week of OTA'a last year......he was then moved to LG

Now back 3 was ago on Tuesday, they had him back at RT for a few snaps during practice due to injuries to Tyron & Free. Which the line would've looked like this:

Green Leary Fred Zac Collins....but this NEVER materialized!
So, unless I'm blind, stupid & deaf.....Collins isn't playing RT

Anything else you wanna discuss?....cause I'll talk about strippers & hookers until the sun comes up ;-)

I doubt the Cowboys will be able to be competitive with what he could get on the open market.

If this line continues to play like it is now through the end of the year, then he will be looking at a massive payday on the open market.

Dallas will be squeezed out financially and they have a cheap fallback with Collins. You can't pay all five OL top money. You have to have a few of them cheap/reasonable.

Or the fact that he's only had around ~30-35 snaps at RT and never in game, your sure as **** there's a lot more I want to discuss.

Not to mention your insinuation that everyone else's opinion in the thread were to be dismissed,

Oh mighty one (/s), why can't Collins play RT? Because of a few snaps in practice/OTAs? Are you McClay all of a sudden? And why were our hypotheticals so easily dismissive?

Hypotheticals, bro.

There's lots I want to discuss with you, now

ETA -- my beef with you @44cowboys22 isnt your opinion, it's your demeaning of other's.

Agree with everything but your last line. Red. When he leaves, we lose.
Not sure on that.

Like Patriots do..we have to learn how to let players go and not overpay to stay..

and still keep play levels high.

What I like is we resigned him and it worked out for him.

He is going to have a rep as a good Cowboy lineman and we move on.

Yes, we should cut Free after the season, which saves us around $5 million, sign Leary to be our starting guard and let Collins and Green battle to start at right tackle.

I base this on the fact that Leary is a younger and better player than Free is. The knee is of some concern, but at least for next season, we would have adequate backups in case something happens like it did this year with Collins.

Smith, Leary, Frederick, Martin, Collins and Green is a pretty good six-man line group, and Looney, although a step down, isn't a bad backup, either.

I like Free, but at his age and cost, I think we're set up better long term to move on from him next year with no fall-off likely next year with either Collins or Green starting.
