I avoided posting in this thread because the 'tone' was a bit too negative even though I am often critical of the media articles that we see here. But I really want to summarize my views because.....well......because I do
So many media products contain a brand of knee jerk skepticism (or cynicism) that seems so popular these days. The media in general are all trying to 'create' stories if one doesn't run up and bite 'em on the posterior. They often do the 'create controversy' thing in lieu of background work and the other things that make a story (like good writing), controversial or not. Mickey Spagnola has mentioned a 'pack mentality' in the media where they all concentrate on the same thing for fear of missing something. In that career field, it seems better to write about the same 'might happen' event rather than search for something different.
The national media has little excuse because the Cowboys are such a high profile team and the local media has no excuse at all. I often hear that we 'serious fans' do not represent the public at large and the average joe is not particularly interested in details in the regular season much less the off-season (How bout them Mavericks....or Stars.......or Rangers?). The average joe knows TO is controversial and that's about it so let's just write about him or that Parcells is fighting with Jones....ad nauseum. That attitude is wrong at best and insulting at worst.
There are varying levels of fan interest in all sports but that doesn't mean you write to the lowest common denominator. You write to the the most knowledgable and let the less interested fan pick up stuff from that material as they may.
Here's a novel idea for the media. Take a whole season and do honest analysis while avoiding the 'skeptical view' except where on field performance justifies it. Now I understand the whole fourth estate thing, but it seems to me it would be refreshing to do analysis without conjecture on how soon TO will fall on his upper lip or whether Parcells and Jones are speaking to each other.
OK, I've rehashed some of my views. I feel much better now. We can return to the previously scheduled personal attacks already in progress.
