Nice 3.9 ypc average.

Duckett is obviously their goal line option. Maybe a stopgap until Portis is full healthy, just eat some carries.

I think there may be more to the Portis injury than the public knows at this point. Still, Duckett doesn't seem the logical choice to fill Portis role.

Maybe he meant they swap picks in that scenario....ie, Washington's 1st and 3rd for Denver's 1st and 3rd....

If that's what they meant, they didn't even come close to getting that across.

He was out basically four weeks with an injury last year. He missed most of one game, all of 2, and was lucky the bye week fell in the middle of that stretch. I remember because I had Dunn on my fantasy team and it helped him out.

Does this mean that they're worried that Portis's injury could be worse than we've been allowed to believe? Betts is a decent backup so this deal makes no sense otherwise. It must be that they're worried Portis may miss some time and they don't trust Betts to be an every down back.

That's gotta be what he meant by saying "thus have a higher pick."

I agree though, bad wording

Broncos | Team receives 2007 third-round pick in Lelie three-way trade
Tue, 22 Aug 2006 19:24:43 -0700

Paul Newberry, of the Associated Press, reports the Denver Broncos received the Washington Commanders' third-round pick in the 2007 draft as part of the three-way deal that shipped WR Ashley Lelie to the Atlanta Falcons and RB T.J. Duckett to the Commanders, according to two officials within the league who spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been officially announced.

I don't know if it's worse than they are letting on, but separated shoulders are not easy to come back from during the season. The grind of being a RB could easily reaggravate it, and cause him to have to have surgery.

There is a chance Portis gets reinjured mid season and has to miss substantial time.

Here's the AP story saying it's a 3rd. Didn't know if it had been posted in the thread. If so, here it is again for your reading pleasure.
Falcons trade Duckett to Commanders, get Lelie from Denver

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons traded running back T.J. Duckett to the Washington Commanders on Tuesday as part of a three-team deal and acquired holdout receiver Ashley Lelie from the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos received Washington's third-round pick in the 2007 draft as part of the deal, according to two officials within the league who spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been officially announced.

Washington had been shopping for a running back since star Clinton Portis partially dislocated his shoulder in the preseason opener against Cincinnati. The Commanders are unsure if he'll be ready for the start of the regular season.

The Falcons, meanwhile, were eager to land another receiver after losing Brian Finneran to a season-ending knee injury in the early days of training camp. Lelie was the NFL's leader in yards per catch the last two seasons, but he held out of training camp in hopes of forcing a trade.

Denver will flip flop first-round picks with Washington if the Commanders’ finish with a worse record than the Broncos this season and thus have a higher pick. The Broncos would also get Washington’s third-round pick in that scenario.

If Washington finishes with a better record than Broncos this season the teams will keep their first-round picks and the Broncos will receive the Commanders’ third- and fourth-round picks.

Betts will be traded for O-line depth. The Skins wanted a goal-line back and Betts doesn't really fit that role. Duckett is one of the best in the business at scoring from within 5 yards. CP's fantasy stock just dropped.

Wouldn't that be what Rock Cartwright or someone of his talent level would be for? T.J. Duckett isn't a #1 back IMO but I also believe that he's better than a 3rd running option on a team with Portis and Betts in the backfield and Moss, Randle El, B. Lloyd and Cooley running routes.

There is such a thing as overkill or what's that saying "too many hands in the pot... spoil the playoffs." Or something like that.

Commanders STILL NEED MORE BALLS TO GO AROUND!
:starspin

EDIT: Missed the part about trading Betts. It would be all well and good if that were to happen, but from all the talk coming out of training camp, that scenario would be way off base. Apparently the Commanders have big plans for Betts.

This makes perfect sense for Washington IMO. I'm sure they don't like the draft pick loss but Gibbs has to have a back to carry the load in that offense. There is no way to know about Portis. It could be a season ending injury or probably at least 4-6 weeks easy.

Sorry to see someone get injured. This does make Washington a weaker team. But they did put a very big bandaid on their problem.

Broncos wide receiver Ashley Lelie got his wish Tuesday night as did the Broncos.

Lelie wanted a change of scenery and has gotten one as Denver was part of a three-way trade with the Washington Commanders and the Atlanta Falcons. In the end the Falcons ended up with Lelie, the Broncos got draft picks from the Commanders and Washington got running back T.J. Duckett.

The trade was completed Tuesday night as the three teams agreed to the terms.

For Lelie it means he finally gets back on the field after vowing he would not play for the Broncos again if he didn't have to. He has been upset at the prospect of being the "No. 3 receiver with the Broncos and nothing more'' after the team traded for, and then signed long-term, wide receiver Javon Walker.

Lelie had not attended any of the Broncos offseason workouts and had not attended training camp. The team had fined Lelie $14,000 a day, a total that reached $322,000 for training camp alone as of Monday's practice.

I'm guessing that means the Redstinks still have a first rounder next year. Thought they would have traded it by now.

They don't have a 2nd rounder. That went to the Jets. They might not have a 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

If I were a fan of that team I would hate that with a purple passion.

Ok so to sum it up Next season Washington is without a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round pick

If they finish with a better record than Denver they lose a 4th in 2008

They traded a third round pick for Duckett who is a Free agent after this year? wierd

Is Duckett worth a 3rd and a 4th? Not in my book. I'd gripe about a 3rd for him. Plus they could have to move back in round 1 if the Skins are worse than they are.

Is it just me or does Denver continue to rape the Skins in Draft pick trades?
