Just admit it you don't like Mayer and it has nothing to do with him as a player.

I bet you did not like Martin either before he was drafted, right? Thought he was 'meh' too

As I recall Jason Witten was considered Meh by a lot of people as well
Martin was far from meh. He dominated at LT at ND and could’ve been an excellent OT in the NFL. Witten had great testing and was solid in his skill set. Plus was rated in the same range as Mayer. I think he is extremely safe to almost a point in where I think he’s like being down 10 points taking a FG from the 2 yard line instead of going for it. Also, Ifeel we would not get All-Pro production from Mayer, plus, we’d lose out on a Edge, WR or OG who would be a plus value on our team right now.

I have no doubt Mayer will be an excellent TE. But he’s slow and not very dynamic. He pretty much does everything well. Having said that Fergs and Hendershot have a ton of potential and it seems like Mayer would be more of a luxury pick.
People are sleeping on Ferguson and it’s because where he was drafted even though most of the NFLs best TEs are not 1st rounders.

TEs change and develop a ton from college to the pros.

Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews were both drafted by the Ravens.

Hurst was the best TE in the draft and a 1st rounder.

Andrews a 3rd rounder and viewed as a weak blocker.

How did that turn out?

What GM would take Hurst over Andrews now?

In fairness, to his point, there were absolutely people here down on the pick (Martin) because he just wasn't a sexy pick. We had guys lobbying for Cooks over him, Mosely over him, etc. Shoot, some here wanted Johnny Boy.

I think people are "sleeping" on Ferguson because he's clearly got a ceiling. Can he be decent? Sure. But he's not a guy that you look at and say, you know what, we don't have to try to upgrade that position. Washington, if he develops as a pass catcher, would eventually be a big upgrade over Ferguson. Mayer would likely start this year over Ferguson. Doesn't mean people hate him but the reality is he was a mid-rounder for a reason and has shown nothing that would make you think he's the cornerstone TE this team needs for the next 2-3 years.

My only problem with Washington is on the quicker routes. Like if we get blitzed and he has to make himself a target quickly can he do it?

Cavanaugh makes good points but his obsession with little wide receivers is alarming. Cavanaugh must have loved the run and shoot offense back in the day.
You should learned by now trusting the Canvanugh's/Voch Lombardi's-they are just fans who pretend to think they can evaluate talent. Both hated the Parsons/Tyler selections.

Ha yep, but I’ve gotta agree.

Damn I hope I am very wrong as those are my top two targets, but I see them both gone and Mayer is the pick.

It’s tough to figure how teams are going to grade Washington, but I think at least one GM will fall in love with the upside and he will be the first TE taken, around 12-15.

He isn’t really boom or bust because worst case, he is among the best run blockers in the league and he presents a red zone issue for defenses. Immediately. If he hits 70% of his pass catching upside he is worth pick 26 IMO.

But if one of the tackles miraculously slide, have to go that way over him.

If they want to go safe, go Avila or Torrence there, not Mayer.

Jason Witten is one of my favorite all time Cowboys and the only authentic jersey I ever sprung for (after his rookie year), but watching him at the end left a bad taste with Garrett still running him out there. The fact that Mayers “highlights” reminded me of that time precludes me from getting excited about the guy. He looks like a check down guy, but maybe they think Dak needs that after his woobie headed south.

He needs work for sure.

If you could somehow combine Washington and Mayer in a lab, you'd have a home run pick.

Both are entertaining. I think Voch posts on this board. YouTube and you guys make the Cowboys fun. The last 30 years have been painful as a Cowboys fan. I am around Raven, Steelers and Eagles fans.

If you take a TE at 12 and he turns into nothing but a blocking TE and a guy who might get you some TDs in the red zone because he's tall, that's a bust pick.

You take a TE at 12, he better be one of the better TEs in football.

I get too much of a Schultz vibe from Mayer. Sure he’ll contribute earlier than Schultz did, but I don’t think their games are vastly different.

Amuses me how obsessed some people are on Mayer.

I think its probably because he went to Notre Dame.

Or is it a fact that some here do not respect lunch pail players?

So in love with flash and dash?

Or so hopped up on potential that all too often does not pan out - Washington has IMMENSE potential but how often does it work out?
I'll take lunch pail. Give me Torrence at #26 over this guy. Yes, it's a 'reach'. If the trade back is there take it. But if not take I'll happily take the guard at #26 over this guy.

If it must be a TE, I'll also take Washington at 26 over this guy. For now, he's a lunch pail guy, most useful for his blocking. If he never develops, he'll still give you 80% of what Mayer projects to give you in the pass game and much more than Mayer in the run game. And if he develops he'll be a Gronk-level mismatch.

Correct you are, and if his vid. dealt specifically with HIS opinion, I wouldn't waste my time posting it. But, he employed athletic metrics configured by someone else so I find somewhat worthwhile.

I think for the most part we all agree that Mayer's test number, 7.65 per this eval., is just what we all expected. It's good, but indicative of a player with an athletic ceiling. This begs the question, is a player of that ilk worth a first round selection when other less coveted (supposedly) TE's in this class have much higher grades? Again, this is strictly a conversation based on one specific athletic test which you may consider hogwash.

you clearly were not listening on the day of the draft when he was picked. Now because so many were terrified Jerry was going to take the idiot called Johnny Football, Martin was a huge relief.

For about an hour. Then a lot of meh.

IF any of these tests were TRULY as the originators claimed, then they would be all that the teams used

Almost everybody on the board was celebrating like A MFer that we got Witten AND in the third round. It was universal jubilation
I was on several boards at that time and no people were not celebrating like that for the Witten pick

Thats because you want a large WR not a TE
